If you were a Tory MP right now you'd surely just line up some evil corporate job and do a RUNNER.

Look, if it came to a GE the Tory press would do their usual, these numbers wouldn't happen but it shows how angry people are now. Truss should do the right thing and drive the Tory clown car off the nearest bridge i.e. call a GE at the conference.

She won't. But you have to wonder what it would take.

There are three key factors in Labour's lead. First, the proportion of 2019 Conservative voters who now say they will vote Labour has risen to a sizeable 17%, doubling from 8% in our poll published on Monday. Only 37% of those who backed the Conservatives in the previous election currently intend to stick with the party.

In historical perspective, this 17% ‘Con to Lab’ switching figure far eclipses the 5% rate of switching we saw when, under Ed Miliband, Labour were consistently the Tories by more than 10 points in 2012. The current situation is more comparable to the around 16% of 1992 Conservative voters who switched to Labour in 1997 under Tony Blair, according to the British Election Study.

The second important factor in Labour's lead is that a further 26% of 2019 Conservative voters say they do not know how they would vote if an election were held tomorrow, and 9% say they would not vote at all. These figures have not changed significantly since Monday, but are higher than in the spring when the recorded ‘Con to don’t know’ figure was between 15-20% and Labour’s lead was between zero and five points.

The third important story in the growing Labour lead is the squeeze on support for the Liberal Democrats. While in July YouGov polling had Ed Davey’s party at 15% of vote intention, they have now slipped to just 7% in our latest poll. Fully half (50%) of 2019 Liberal Democrat voters now tell us they intend to vote Labour.

Ed Davey there like "now why am I in it?"

Truss told BBC Scotland: “What I want to do is work with Nicola Sturgeon to deal with our energy crisis and that’s about making sure we’re producing more homegrown energy - I’m keen to use more of the resources in the North Sea and also see more nuclear power stations built across the country, including in Scotland.

“I’m very keen to talk to Nicola Sturgeon about that because I think that will help us make sure we have long-term energy security that, alongside wind power in Scotland, we also have nuclear power in Scotland.”

When asked if she was playing into the hands of supporters of Scottish independence, the Prime Minister didn’t answer the question, saying instead: “I am very keen to work with Nicola Sturgeon to make sure we grow the Scottish economy.

“Scotland is a country that has fantastic entrepreneurs, fantastic exports, I believe that by improving infrastructure, by reducing taxes, we can really turbocharge the Scottish economy.”

Truss’s entreaties towards Sturgeon come after she said during a Tory hustings event as she ran for leader of the party Sturgeon was an “attention seeker” who should be ignored.

I mean I don't understand these different models, but it's not lessening my enjoyment any.

Some of the Tory creeps who’ve been wheeled out to defend her have been using rhetoric that reads suspiciously like austerity.

Can you imagine if she’s forced to do austerity round 2 on the back of her own mistakes?

As tasty as those figures look I find it hard to get excited when a GE is 2 years away.

This is the biggest issue. We actually need Truss to get her shit together at least a little bit, otherwise right now we're heading for Boris as PM again by January. And he'd enjoy a huge bump in popularity in a "all is forgiven, we see now you're better than the alternative" way.

Definitely. Johnson will be thrilled at all this. It was nothing but the internal drama to him anyway, the public were always non-player characters to him.

There's no imagination required, I'd say austerity mark 2 is all but guaranteed at this point.

Of course it's austerity. Efficiency savings = cuts.

Which is ridiculous considering all areas of government already had to find 5% savings this year. And now they have to find more whilst inflation decimates already overstretched budgets.

Any flesh from public services was trimmed away under Cameron and Clegg. They have been hacking into bone for the best part of a decade now.

They don't stand a chance of getting it through, or remotely surviving getting it through if they were able to muster up the support of a majority behind a whole package. It'd be poll tax territory. Any formal attempt at cutting health or welfare from where it is now to try and fund tax cuts to the richest would genuinely probably get some Tory MPs killed.

I just can’t imagine how the Tory party conference plays out. Other than they absolutely and positively double down, and give her a ten minute standing ovation just for standing there. No doubt the Fail are strategising right now how to position her as the second coming of Christ.

I feel queasy.
