The HOTLY ANTICIPATED 2022 Christmas Number One thread

Loads of big acts have released new Christmas singles in recent years. Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran immediately come to mind. They generally do well-ish in the first year and come back as minor hits towards the end of the standard Christmas playlists. With the exception of Sheeran last year, they don't really compete for Christmas number one and I'll be very interested to see how his song does this year.

It's Spotify etc playlists that throttle the new ones. Christmas was always the one time of year when old people could ruin everything (see Cliff vs Kylie & Jason) and it still is - instead of new Christmas songs that appeal to the usual audience whose listening makes up the charts, it gets invaded by drunk 56 yr olds at the Xmas Party who want to shout the f-slur during The Fairytale Of New York.

How do they pronounce the name on the chart rundown, if indeed they even bother with such things DE NOS JOURS? “The K…”? “The K Unts?”

They were literally ignored. I believe the actual BBC chart programme just said something like "at no 5 is a protest song aimed at the Prime Minister which has such a rude title we can't even tell you what it's called" or similar.

Oh I forgot Coldplay. That's over a decade old now though, isn't it?

Also forgot Ariana. No idea of the Taylor Swift one, and have forgotten the Sheeran one totally, even after reminding myself what it was called.

I forgot about Ed and Elton. I couldn’t even tell you what it went like. Leona seems to be a Christmas staple though that charts Top 20? every year over the festive period.

Apparently Peter Crouch has done a charity Christmas thing with Paul Potts ''Crouchy Conducts The Classics', with all profits going to Stonewall to tackle oppression in Qatar :o

This is quite clever because the tracks are all very short and therefore, eminently replayable.

I've noticed that quite a few old Christmas songs are getting a festive physical release this year. Elton John for one.

What is the Coldplay one? Ariana is Santa Tell Me? Not sure how well that does each year?

Exclusive intimate venue being Crudge’s living room AGAIN no doubt

**Mike Nolan will not be attending this event, due to Panto Commitments.

What will people have plenty of time to do? What an exciting ellipsis. GET HANDSY? Directly accuse them of WAR CRIMES?

We really need someone to attend that and report back on the party food. I’d offer to go - mind you, bit pricey - but I just know I would laugh uncontrollably throughout the whole event and TO THE FACE. I imagine Jay might get a bit X-rated with the proferring of toppy carrots

At least Crudge and Adolf’s lovely party has taken my mind off LadBaby. How do they get rid of guests at the end? I imagine there are some fans who’ll be trying to get to the bedrooms to have a whiff of knicker. Does Adolf get busy with the tear gas?

And they are both about to hit their 10th annual outing, aren't they? Are there really no more shaping up to be festive staples?

Coldplay and The Darkness (ugh) appear to have done alright and feature heavily on the comps and Christmas charts

The Darkness? I haven’t heard that since about 2004. Does it do big numbers on streaming?

I hate The Darkness. The joke doesn't even work properly.

The video was quite funny tho'. Sort of. Ish.

Also that Sia Snowman song does well internationally

Spotify numbers are huge

That used to be my daughters showpiece here at Christmas when all the family were over. That hasn’t happened since before lockdown so I assume she won’t be giving it a turn this year.

The Darkness came out at the same time as that Keith Lemon rubbish I think? Not a vintage year.

I’m always amused by SHOWPIECE (also SHOWBOAT) so what did it actually involve?

Proper Chrimbo was actually 4 years later. Once you get to my age all the years start to GEL.

My Mother used to get her to stand in the middle of the room and sing Snowman for everyone. Quite a common thing in an Irish household. My parents owned a bar when we were growing up and we always had to do a turn for the punters whether it be sing/dance/tell jokes. :zombie:

Yeah, The Darkness is nearly two decades old already.

Now we've got Mariah and Wham their #1 The Pogues and The Darkness are next!

Already imagining Band Aid 40, those emotional opening bars from Paul Young, Boy George, George Michael and Bono expertly recreated by Fredo, Aitch, Central Cee and Bad Boy Chiller Crew :eyes:

To be fair Ariana and Kelly do fairly well internationally for somewhat new ‘classics’, with Leona in the UK as well. It does though strike me as odd many more acts don’t give it a bash - even the likes of Britney’s one from a dodgy 1999 compilation does solidly and racks up about ten million plays each season. Given it happens every year it must be money for jam to release something that can slot in at the bottom of a playlist.

Leona and Ariana are both certified 2x platinum in the UK. The OCC reported Kelly was on 780k in September 2021, so I assume she's likely to hit a million this year.

This was from the OCC in December last year.

That was what was reported a couple of years ago. I doubt it has changed significantly.

Noddy Holder must have made an absolute bomb off that song. The Pogues and Mariah aren’t that far behind. I always remember Tony Mortimer saying that he still makes a good living from Stay Another Day too.
