Sam Ryder - There's Nothing But Space, Man! (album out now)

I know this is very late old news, but I cannot believe he called the album that :D Ridiculous or inspired, I don't know. It sounds a bit gimmicky.

Happy for him though, this makes his year as a whole look much better now and of course he's doing the BBC New Year gig thing which is pretty amazing for a new artist, no?

I'm mostly pleased because it keeps up the Eurovision is worth doing mentality at just about the right time..

1404 cassettes. Like who is buying a Sam Ryder cassette?

Good on him though.

I'll probably pick up a copy of the CD for my mum for Christmas

I imagine most of those are the hardcore fans @MegaDolly is referring to. If I'd already purchased and was thinking of buying a second copy, that's probably where I would have gone.

It’s just a bit odd though isn’t it? Like I get a Steps fan picking up a cassette as a piece of memorabilia, but to think there is over 1,000 people hooked enough on OUR SAM to actually buy a cassette is rather strange.

Buying cassettes at all is utterly strange. I bought one of the Kylie Golden ones and just think what a wanker I am each time I see it.

@MegaDolly are you Sam Ryder?

Lol. The cassette thing has come from his pre-order store bundles.

I know people like to criticise but a new artist to have a Gold single, #1 album, sold out tours and multiple other lower charting singles in between since May is good. He’s way beyond the criteria for a “rising star” BRIT because he released a top 20 album in less than 2 years.

Only down to #5 in the Midweeks which seems pretty decent all told. If he can hold onto top ten I'd hope he can at least clear another five figures given it's Christmas week.

There are some proper cassette loons I see on Instagram.

I must admit, I always get a bit "awww" when I see a modern album I know the cover of on cassette (Example: Kylie's Fever) but I was never interested in cassettes when they were popular, so I'm certainly not going to start now.

They were my format of choice after getting vinyl cracked and scribbled on by my sister until I bought my first CD player.

But outside of convenience they have nothing going for them.

And I know we've had this conversation before @Sheena , but they have definitely become incredibly more collectible in the last few years, haven't they? I guess it was inevitable after vinyl.

You could frequently pick up really rare ones in charity shops/ebay and even discogs until about 3 or 4 years ago I'd say. Now every fucker is trying to get £5-£10 for the most common ones in mediocre condition.

They are more collectible, absolutely. The charity shop thing is so true. I have absolutely no idea why, though...as you say, entirely pointless. I guess the thirst for physical media is still there.

I bought a Golden one as well because some special exclusive content was promised. I can't remember what it was but I know it was a damp squib.

I've also got a Betty Boo one, included in some bundle. Both look so cheap, like cassette singles from back in the day.

The TV advert for this album is very odd. Very much selling our Sam and his story rather than any music.

Isn't it? I watched half of it wondering what he was promoting, before remembering he even had an album out.

It’s Christmas week but he’s sold more by Monday than Louis Tomlinson, Dermot Kennedy and Olly Murs did all week during their second week. Postal delays wont help online sales.

Its fall from #1 was cushioned by the fact there were no new releases last week. The drop of 58% is certainly a lot less than a lot of #1 albums in their second week though - although as its the week before Christmas it's perhaps not an ideal comparision.

I assume the chart will be reasonably stagnant next week, so it will be interesting to see how he fares relatively. And then he's got the new year promo to carry him through.

Now, when do we get those Brit nominations?

It’s down to #10 this week.

#3 on sales or #1 without compilation albums.
#5 on downloads

+4626 sales totalling 39924.

He's at #3 on sales behind Taylor Swift and Cliff Richard, not compilations, isn't he?

The fact that he's fallen out of the album streaming chart entirely (32 - 44 - out) isn't a good sign in terms of possible longevity for the album, once Christmas sales have dried up. Still, hopefully the NYE promo will keep him buoyant next week at least.

Yes ignore that.

It’s not but it’s a risk to release any album without a strong lead single or streaming history. It’s doing better than people thought and sales-wise it could be worse. His Christmas song reached 41.

Inevitably, a copy of his album made it into my Christmas stocking this year. Was it widely known that he's seemingly quite the Jesus fan?

I guess it tracks. He does have quite strong mormon energy, what with the relentless positivity.

I think Zu said as much way back, didn't he?

I vaguely recall him saying his old band was Christian and the band members prayed every day. He also believes in aliens.

I kept avoiding saying it (or maybe I said it) but a lot of his promo photos remind me of that cult leader terrorist from Contact and I can’t stop thinking about it

He's released a SUPER ULTRA Deluxe Edition adding on some tracks from his NYE show

Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting) [NYE Live Version]
Somebody To Love (NYE Live Version)
Freedom (NYE Live Version)
Proud Mary (NYE Live Version)

That's fantastic. He was really good, if you like that sort of thing. Excellent exposure.

He and his record company have played an absolute blinder. He seems to have a lot of goodwill behind him.

His coming back to do signings and street gigs locally has gone down very well, unlike some local stars *cough* Blur *cough*.

It's a shame he couldn't add his version of Jingle Bells to it for some extra streaming the last couple of weeks. But I guess that was because it was an Amazon exclusive.

that's kind of a mild bump after the NYE special isn't it?
