Flibbertigibbet Wednesday

Flibbertgibbet sounds like a proper 90s internet username.

Just back from a week in Spain with my mum and I woke up feeling shit. Took a test and I have COVID, the line showed up instantly. I have a constant cough and as the morning goes on I’ve started feeling worse. I also have a bruised rib so every time I cough it hurts.

I just messaged my boss on Teams but I don’t know if I’m fit enough to work but I feel bad as I’ve just come back today.

Thanks octy, now I'll have How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria going around my head all day

What a burden :lolly::lolly::lolly:

Hi Moopy.

Mandy and I are on our way to Brighton to see Darren Hayes :disco:

We just got on, and instantly got off, one of the most disgusting trains I've ever been on. So then had to try another train and do another change. But at least this is marginally cleaner :zombie:

I'd use :disco: for a grubby train rather than Darren Hayes.

So I'm in Brighton. Done the lanes, been to a nice brunch place and a local craft ale pub, wandered along the seafront.

I had high hopes for here. So far, not loving it. It's pretty run down and grotty. I miss London as a city.

I mean London is about thirty times bigger, or something. Of course it has more to offer. Parts of Brighton are grotty, but then I've never seen a city without grotty bits. And the most fun is often to be found in the grotty adjacent bits at least. Brighton is more about the vibe than the sights, anyway, isn't it? Particularly for you when the beach is no novelty. Not that I rate Brighton's beach at all really.

Last time I went to Brighton it seemed to be full of cockney wide boys in flat caps being ‘chaps’.

And I bumped into Zoe Ball in the lanes.

The vibe so far has been off your face drunks, druggies with fighting staffies, and some graffiti.

Apart from the lanes. Which I very much liked. And the Roly's obviously.

I bought a nice fruit crumble bun in the lanes. That was a highlight.

And Mandy found a sauna next to a strip club she wanted to visit, until I informed her probably wasn't the sort of sauna she's used to.

From what I remember, the best street art there is very much right next to the grottiest parts. Very similar to here in fact - until it became a big thing and Upfest started, at least.

We did see some street art which was pretty good actually. I like street art. Shit teen spray paint I don't like.

The area around Mr L's mother's old house is becoming increasingly known for street art. These below are all in a tight warren of Victorian terraces.

Rachey have you ever been to Glasgow? I'd love your review :disco:
No, it's never appealed. I've been to Edinburgh. I liked that.

I'm very judgemental of cities tho, I do admit that.

@lolly I love those!
They are all in a relatively small area south of the city centre. There has been an annual Urban Paint Festival (UPFest) very close by which is always crazy busy, but it has moved to every two years, with this year being a rest year.

But the festival is on the streets and in the local parks - just google Upfest and you'll find loads of amazing examples of it. And most of it is left behind on the streets until the next festival when it's all painted over again.

So the next time you come up, let me know and we can do a self guided walking tour. The main street through it all has plenty of great bars and restaurants.

This is a good article with the highlights of last year. I didn't go then (I forget why), but I've been for a wander a couple of times since.

Brighton is full of rogues. It's part of it's "charm". They keep themselves to themselves for the most part. Go on a sunny day in early autumn and it's charms will be more obvious. I prefer the parks of Brighton to the beaches. Also the food, drink and shopping is top tier.

As a former resident I've shown Brighton to Mr Ag and he loves it. @Rachey did you do both sets of Lanes? If so, did you go into Snoopers Paradise? That's quite special.

Oh God the seafront and West Street is full of London cunts

I try to use my local knowledge to indulge some of the cultural and foodie side of the city, when I go. One of the best locations I stayed when visiting was the Brighton/ Hove boundary. So many lovely pubs and restaurants and really not far from the centre.

Marocco's restaurant on the seafront in Hove is one of my favourite restaurants anywhere. It's a relatively simple trattoria style affair inside, but the seafood is as good as any I've had in this country.

Don't recall that one, but would probably recognise it. As Mr Ag doesn't drink, we focus instead on eating VERY WELL. There's a charming Greek place on Western Road, which I love. The Lion and Lobster between Bedford and Norfolk Square, does the best roast I have ever eaten. Always a go to when down there. Failing that a trip on the 88 bus up to Devil's Dyke on a Sunday for a roast with a view.

I think it's better known as an ice cream parlour by day. Right on the front, a couple of minutes from the seemingly rather busy in the evening public toilets.

I'm not sure of the road names (it may be Western Road), but I've spent a lot of time eating and drinking on that long road which runs parallel to the seafront a few hundred metres back, all the way through Hove and beyond. I love a place where there are loads of independent cafes and restaurants rather than the chains, which is increasingly rare in many towns and even cities now, but Brighton seems to thrive on them away from the main routes. I'm never quite sure where Brighton becomes Hove exactly (or where Hove becomes whatever is next), but I do recall whenever I asked my friend who I go with that the nicer places all seem to be Hove rather than Brighton itself.

Yes that's Western Road. There's loads of nice stuff scattered all over the city, but they stand out a bit away from the hubbub

I have very floppetesque scenario on my hands. We've been in our new place about 5 weeks now. We get one space in our car park, which is OK atm as we only have one car, at least until we have guests, as there is little parking on the road we're on.

Last week I posted in the resident's facebook group to see if anyone had a space we could use as my parents were up for the weekend. No one replied but the space next to ours in the entire time we've been here has been empty. So I popped my parents in that and put a note on the car saying we were just borrowing it for a night as we noticed it was never used, but if we were in the way to give me a call.

Somone text that night saying their car had been in the garage for the last week and they were picking it up the next day. Bit weird as I haven't seen a car at all in five weeks, but I replied and said we'd clear out in the morning and thanked them. Since then, no car has materialised.

The weirdest thing is that my car is massive and my folks have got a shitty little Peugeot city car thing, you could pick it up and put it in your pocket its that small. We're the space from the end, and you couldn't see their car without walking right down to the end, which the owner of the space obviously did. They aren't using the space at all, and its not like we pay for the space, its in the rent. I can't get my head around the pettiness.

Anyway, its really irking me so I wanted to share this woe with you all. I have no conclusion or closure, just a persistent sense that one of my neighbours is an utter jobsworth. Thanks for listening.

Well yes, I was very polite. I'm still annoyed though. I've started parking slightly over the white line just to prove no one uses the space :D

Next time you've got a guest text the number and politely ask if you can use the space. See what excuse they come up with!!

I've been googling the number and stuff to try and work out who it is. If you want to know just how obsessed I am, I went on the residents group and found the guy who had our spot before had a problem with someone parking in our spot for years. Every time he uploaded a picture of someone else's car in our slot, the one next to us was empty. This shit runs deep.

I have a feeling we may have only done North 🤔 we went to Mange Tout for lunch which was amazing, then wandered definitely North lanes where the Roly's fudge is, then to a few bars, all of which were very lovely. And we're staying opposite the pier.

The beach definitely isn't anything special, but I think the weather today has put a dampener on it.

You're definitely right about the rogues! I must admit there have been a few times I've felt... uneasy? Maybe because I'm not used to the level of rogueness. But there's been a lot of groups of drunks around, and I certainly didn't feel unsafe wandering round London late at night.

Brighton dome is a lovely venue for a small gig tho!
