I think this will do a bit better than Survivor - and I think Bradley and spawn are quite good choices to host, as should bring a slightly wider light entertainment audience to it - BUT so far it looks a bit off to me.

To be a hit I think it needs to be big broad silly knockabout FUN for-all-the-family, with a chance a contestant could end up in a wheelchair for life at any time. Everything I've seen so far (the trailers; the promo shots; the gladiators absolutely botching a plug for it on the Strictly final) has felt pretty dour and unappealing.
 
Sorry FANZ, but I think this is going to FLOP HARD and it does make me question what The BBC are doing touching it with a barge pole.

The BBC who are so full of fresh ideas and great production… :eyes:
 
I'm nervous for it as well. And yes, if it does flop, I think it's only right that questions are asked of the BBC and the dearth of ideas across weekend primetime. I stand by their production values largely though. At least before I've seen this.
 
I would like to point out I LOVED GLADIATORS back when it was on ITV in the 90’s but I think it is probably very much of it’s time.

I would have thought that if there was any hope of it being successful in 2024 then ITV would have thrown a lot of money at it and relaunched it.
 
The assault course game shows are very big in some mainland European countries though, so I do think there is huge potential if the tweaking is done right. I've not watched the new trailer yet admittedly.
 
If it does well, maybe ITV can reboot ICE WARRIORS with Dani Behr hosting it again⛄

It's more the fact that Sky tried it about 15 years ago and it didn't really work then for them, so why now? What is the BBC bringing to make them think it can be a success now? I don't get any sense of widespread nostalgia or ground swell of demand for it.

I absolutely loved it originally as well. I used to watch it every week with my disabled gran, who would have been in her mid 80s then. I went around her house every Saturday evening (my first house was literally around the corner from her), make her tea, we'd watch Gladiators and Catchphrase together, then I'd do the washing up, go home, get ready and go out for a night hunting for cock :disco:

On a similar note, I was MILDLY BAFFLED to see ads during The Masked Singer for a Jeopardy reboot with Stephen Fry, and then a Wheel Of Fortune reboot with Graham Norton. Both launching within days of each other? And ITV only brought Deal or no Deal back a month or so ago (and Big Brother too of course, though that's a bit different)

I don't mind or care or plan to watch, but I hadn't realised they were staking quite so much on resurrected formats.
 
Exactly - there are so few new ideas in entertainment now. Everything is just rehashed and recycled. One of the things that may work in favour of Survivor getting a second series is that nobody can think of anything else.

I don't know if it's that they can't think of anything else, but that they're too scared to invest in anything new in case it flops.

Yes they are both as bad as each other. We already knew that ITV were clean out of ideas, but it is across the board really, isn’t it. They both still produce fantastic dramas though.
 
Considering some of the absurd shows made up in episodes of 30 Rock about 15 years ago have since actually happened, what else is there??

Nobody bats an eyelid at Roman Kemp turning up everywhere despite any discernible charisma, so I think they assumed people are past caring.
 
Also whoever is it at the BBC that has allowed all the ITV talent to transfer EN MASSE doesn't realise that it makes it far harder to distinguish between their shows anymore.

I don't think Kemp is anywhere near as bad and to be fair, his Dad isn't in the presenting game.
 
It still FEELS like a commercial TV show rather than a BBC one, doesn't it? I was expecting an advert break after every event.

Surprised they haven't tinkered with the format a little more. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad one.
 
Watching this now.

Roman Kemp is actually a great TV and radio personality, and obviously neither of his parents are presenters so it’s not quite the same. Not at all comparable to Barney.
 
I'm not sure I'd go as far as saying I particularly LIKE Roman Kemp, but comparing him to Barney Walsh I'd say it's quite clear which one is milking the family connection most.
 
I thought it was pretty decent. Bit of light entertainment and the injury drama made it a bit more interesting.

It all feels a bit slow paced in this day and age though.
 
OK just got through the opening titles. Obviously I'd do all of them (preferably at the same time), but Steel has stuck out :horny:
