EastEnders 2024 (4 Viewers)

One character that has been really jarring is Phil, who ended Christmas Day having just found out he’s Albie’s dad and demanding to be allowed to get to know him, before disappearing completely for a week and showing up again on New Year’s Eve in the pub with Kat having a laugh, playing beer pong with not so much as a hint of what had happened.

I wonder if that has something to do with Letitia Dean’s conspicuous absence from nearly every scene of aftermath (including those featuring The Six) since Boxing Day.

There are a few spoilers for next week that centre around the Phil and Albie plot, but weirdly Sharon doesn't seem to be specifically mentioned in any of them. Zack seems to feature heavily though, so I wonder if there have been some rewrites to accommodate Letitia Dean sickness or something...

Whitney is going to be about 5 months pregnant isn’t she.

I'll be quite glad to see Whitney go. Never has a soap character made me feel more depressed.

It feels weird to think Whitney was just created as childcare plot device to enable Bianca to Bianca around the square without being bogged down dealing with so many kids. It feels like she's been on the show for much longer, I think her and Ronnie are two of the most tortured miserable characters in modern EE history.

Thankfully Lauren is on her way back to make us feel depressed instead.
:D I think I can tolerate her a TINY bit more.

The endless traumas Whitney is subjected to... honestly. I'm genuinely surprised the actress didn't take sick leave for exhaustion/mental health issues? (do let me know if this did in fact happen)

Imagine playing a character who is just constantly being subjected to various traumas? It's absolutely relentless.

I had to look it up and it is RIDICULOUS

Offscreen:
  • Mother walked out on her as a baby
  • Father DEAD after tragic car accident and left with just Bianca as her stepmother
Onscreen:
  • Evicted and living rough off on the streets
  • Molested and groomed by a man in his thirties when she's a teenager
  • Brother Billie randomly dies in the front room
I'm going to have to give up because that's just her first 12 months on screen :o

With Lauren back, surely it’s time for Max to return? He has a daughter with Linda and shares a grandchild with Cindy. Though surely news of Max ever coming back with Abi would spread for Rainie to come running back.

I only want Max back if it's for a rematch with Jane (and he loses), honestly! I feel like he was well and truly played out by the time he left.

I also wonder if Max is still too tainted by his heavy involvement in one of the worst periods of the show's recent history (one that it's still trying to win viewers back from in my opinion), so maybe bringing him back wouldn't be the best idea.

EXACTLY

I’m sure she was kidnapped at one point too, and she’s had absolutely traumatising baby/pregnancy issues as well.

Just when you remember one storyline, you then remember another harrowing storyline. And then covid started the next week after this :eyes:

What about Tanya?

I don't want Max back

Tanya would be great, but she has no connection to anyone other than the Brannings.

Wouldn't her daughter being in the square be enough connection to bring her back, I am sure she could come back and then easily link in with some of the others there

Who was Tanya friends with? Anyone who’s still in the show? Off the top of my head I only remember her being especially close to Jane.

Yes JANE

But was she friends with Sharon?

Maybe Denise? Other than an obvious disdain for Stacey and her friendship with Jane, most of Tanya’s stories revolved around her kids and relationships with men

Was it Jack she had an affair with too? There's plenty to bring her back. She was a beautician too, she could go work with Denise and Kim. She'd slot back in nicely. and Jo Joyner is a fantastic actress :disco:

Tanya was friends with Sharon in the brief period in the early 2010s when they were both in it before Linda’s arrival.

I'd love Tanya (and Jane) back.

I think there's an extent to which the writing after she split up with Max did her a disservice in the way that we're now having a (valid) discussion about who she'd know and where she'd fit in. It felt that whatever Tanya did always ended up being innately tied to Max, rather than developing her as a character who could also exist independently of him.

I suppose that’s why bringing in Elaine and an extended family at least did something for Linda, as the same applies to her without Mick or her kids.

I really couldn’t give a rats ass about this Lauren/Peter/Penny snoozefest 😴

Apart from “she wanted to seduce you with his chorizo sausage”.

Anyway, I hate the soap trope of someone overreacting and getting angry about someone else knowing something they didn’t, and not telling them immediately when it’s not their place and they were going to find out from the appropriate source soon anyway.

“I bet you were all laughing at me weren’t you!” :eyes:

Interesting detail of Sharon going to Australia to see Michelle, who has presumably left America herself to stay with Vicki snd Spencer.

The whole Sharon thing has clearly been a bit of a headache for the writers...

Apparently Letitia Dean was signed off work in November as soon as the Christmas and Boxing Day episodes were filmed. She did one more day of filming to give them a few short scenes to insert (including last night's exit) to explain Sharon's whereabouts, but there must have been a hell of a lot of hasty rewriting.

I'm going to blame that for the aftermath of The Six stuff being a bit of a shambles so far.

I’m not impressed with the Six aftermath at all, but at the same time I’m still watching, so…

I’m glad it appears to be Suki centric going forward as she’s definitely my favourite.

Is Letitia ill or just taking an extended holiday?

Tonally, it's a bit all over the place, and it's not entirely clear whether that's intentional. On the one hand, the characters are unravelling because of the pressure, and you've got serious issues like Linda relapsing. Then on the other, aspects of it are being played up a bit (I guess, in part, so that The Six aren't presented as being too cold-blooded and calculated).

It still feels like a lot of the plot threads that came to a head over Christmas need to settle into the scripts. The level of secrecy to conceal the victim does seem to have led to a lot of abstract dialogue or characters (like Phil) behaving almost oblivious to significant plot developments that he was involved in on Christmas Day.
