Officially in the US pop top 40 at #34 yesterday, and already up three to #31 today as it continues to boom. Hopefully a solid climb on the Hot 100 this week is due.

+7 to 51 on the Hot 100. with streams having peaked and radio play increasing it might sneak top 40 in the end?

With luck it’ll stay stable on streams and radio can fuel it now. It’s overall numbers are quite low but if it does continue to pick up and head towards the top ten on pop etc it should happily slide top 30/40.

in less fun news... Universal will pull its entire catalogue from TikTok from today, so Murder is likely to suffer from having no new tiktoks to sustain it

If UMG fails to reach an agreement with TikTok, all of its songs will be removed from the service once the deal expires on Wednesday, a UMG spokesperson confirmed to Reuters.
In the open letter, UMG alleged that TikTok accounts for “only about 1% of our total revenue”, which they said was evidence of “how little TikTok compensates artists and songwriters, despite its massive and growing user base, rapidly rising advertising revenue and increasing reliance on music-based content”.

The music company alleged that, during negotiations for a new agreement, TikTok had “proposed paying our artists and songwriters at a rate that is a fraction of the rate that similarly situated major social platforms pay”.

oh yay! Sorry Lady Gaga, time for some old fashion promo if LG7 ever surfaces by doing talk shows and appearing on shoddy tv shows :disco:

Also, songs over 3 minutes were due for a comeback.

I've noticed that theaudience has gotten their own video channel and uploaded their videos in good quality for those interested:

I guess everyone's ca$hing in!

Surely this is nuts? I absolutely get that TikTok are shit at direct compensation for use of music - but surely they have to take into account the commercial boost that many songs received from going viral on TikTok? People are mostly only hearing 15 second snatches of songs on TikTok rather than entire songs - it’s not a music streaming platform… more like organic advertising!

TikTok makes countless billions from all those users making their videos with music the app pays barely anything to license. it helps the labels too of course but they and the artists deserve a lot more of the money in the TikTok pot.

It does seem shit that they can’t pay what the likes of other social media platforms will (I assume like Instagram etc?), but it’s very much a mutual beneficial relationship so I assume it’ll be ironed out quickly.

What will probably happen is that creators on TikTok will create bootleg sounds (something they do all the time anyway - songs frequently often get big on there off a speeded up, slowed down, mashed up or otherwise remixed version of a song) and the label and the artists will get fuck all. For this reason, I suspect Universal and TikTok will want to sort it out quickly.

Speaking of bootlegs. Who produced the 2020 version of Groovejet off her Kitchen album? It sounds awful, was it due to licensing issues they couldn't include the original Spiller version?

I’m guessing so. It only came to Spotify and streaming two years ago so I’m assuming a very long ongoing battle between some parties. Maybe even as far back as 2002 given her debut album only got a live version?

I read a tweet 5 minutes ago that said something like “middle aged gays will be having a breakdown about this today” and they WEREN’T WRONG. :D

What even IS the point? It’s JUST AWFUL.

Did the sped up thing begin because people were trying to avoid tripping up detection software?

This speed up version is quite cute :shy:

If it gets her some more streams, particularly in the US, then milk it Soph. Even if it is completely unnecessary.

it's absolutely shit. thank god the original is on spotty now also.

I don't hate it, but yes, obviously it's licensing issues.

Same reason that the Read My Lips album has a live version on it rather than the real thing.

At the time of Kitchen Disco's release, the Spiller Groovejet still wasn't available on Spotify, so a close-as-possible re-record was the best solution.

Obviously redundant now the original is finally streamable.

Obviously the whole trend of tempo changes and TikTok is SHIT

But more SEB in the charts is no bad thing. And the dumped arthouse lesbian version isn't completely unlistenable sorry all!

No, it's just a trend - I believe it started as a reversal of the slowed and reverbed trend that made things weird and dreamlike. And pissed me right off because if ever I wasn't happy with something I'd recorded, the first thing I would try is slowing it down and adding some reverb. Bloody meddling kids.

Down six to #57 in the US, as the streaming and sales subside a bit. It’s still gaining very well at radio currently (#27 on pop and #34 on AC), so hopefully that will flatten that and it can go up a few spots next week.

Apparently performing this on The Tonight Show on Monday? :o

Also now #23 on US pop radio and is gaining the third best out of the whole chart - looking like this is properly exploding in the US now.

I missed out on the fact this was certified double platinum in the UK last week :disco:
