Social Media Platforms RATE

01 Facebook - one point for its important role as an online containment facility for the aged and the stupid
07 X Formerly Twitter - you have to make a sustained effort to curate your feed and block out all UK/US current affairs posting, but I like the slight Wild West air of the old internet that has returned to the site since they fired all of the content moderators (who needs BestGore.com these days!) and I think it is a fairly invaluable public square, as much as it's also cheapened so much of our politics and cultural discourse
08 Instagram - I pick up a lot of recipes from here and I also like watching those disgusting viral cooking videos where morbidly obese Americans make casseroles with McDonalds burgers etc
00 TikTok - brain rot obviously, but the transparent CCP brainwashing campaigns to make Western youths venerate tyrants like Osama Bin Laden and Cilla Black are quite funny
06 YouTube - terrible search function, baffling popularity of 9 hour video essays about iCarly, saved by comments on classic UK rave tracks
07 Reddit - I've quietly assembled a handful of entertaining sub-reddits but I'd rather be identified as the Somerset Gimp than as a "Redditor"
05 LinkedIn - essential for perving on attractive men that I encounter in my life as a sane and sorted young professional (needs a media tab though)
00 Tumblr - amazed this still exists
00 Pinterest - and this
00 Snapchat - and this
10 Truth Social - can someone ask Q when they're going to re-value these Iraqi dinars that I bought online?
09 Recon
06 FetLife

I have deleted the app but have found myself on Facebook on chrome more and more recently. But it seems to be littered with right wing recommended posts? I don't quite know why as it doesn't line up with my friends or other pages.

I want to deactivate again but I do use it a lot for work. Might make a blank professional account.

It's the algorithm. My Facebook feed is full of stuff that isn't "me", but it's my own fault because I love judging a shitty boomery comment section, so now that's what it shows me. That and Simpsons memes.

It's not what it used to be, that is to say, a way of keeping up with friends and family. I barely see anyone's personal updates on there anymore. It's become like every other social media platform. A means for news, comment pieces, and memes.

Any thoughts on Bluesky now that it's fully open?

I like the idea of a Musk-free equivalent to Twitter that is a bit more coherent than that Mastadon mess. But if it's just more witch hunting, cancel culture and TERFs I'll pass.

Bluesky is boring as a bottle of piss BUT they have finally figured out gifs and will be getting things like vids, DMs, etc some time this year. I still prefer the chaotic nature of Twitter (X) over it.

I'm kinda over all social media. I still pop the odd FB status on, if I know I'll get interaction. I can go months without. I still scroll through Twitter, for news, cats and gay shit.

Barely open Instagram. Who CARES?

I've really been missing the late 00s recently. We had phones but we weren't so dependent, as they were basically texts and snake. Social media existed but it didn't have the addiction built in.

Probably just misty eyed nostalgia and getting old, but the point remains.

I use it less and less. I didn’t realize how much I missed old school socialization online like here until I came back.

I know lockdown saved Moopy but it's not quite fallen back to pre lockdown times. The Internet has all splintered off into tribes and we have a purpose again!

This calls for a CHART

So we're about double what we were pre lockdown. Feels about right.

Lockdown was absolutely insane. As people were dying, we were posting!

Some old users came back and stayed.

... While others disappeared again the second it was over.

The other day, I counted 13 group/ad/business posts on facebook before I saw an update from a real person.

I think forums will gain ground again, weve experimented with a big global community and realised it was a horrorshow.

I did like that random period where you would just get an friend request from a thai grandma for no reason though.

The fact that forums are still insanely popular speaks to their timelessness. Unlike chat rooms and dating sites, which were too anonymous and sleazy, forums and message boards mimicked real life relationships much better (and still much better than social media) because they're centered around common interests/beliefs. There's an assumed level of respect for something other than mY bRanD.

Social media isn't centered around ANYTHING. There are no presumed rules or standards. They resemble chat rooms more than anything - just a massive sea of random anonymous noise.

I do think the forum format easily makes for longevity if the site manages to stay around. I still have friends from the late 90s Madonna forums that I still talk to to this day.

Not to be THAT guy, but social media is what you make of it. I've trained the algorithms to mainly give me cats and Mariah. So it's NEVER toxic.

But those of y'all whose feeds are full of partisan politics, foreign wars, and Christina Aguilera, YEAH your social media is cancerous.

That doesn't work when Elon Musk is leaning so heavily on the scales

Unfortunately I’ve redownloaded X since and it’s brought me nothing but despair

One minor change I made was to turn off FB notifications. Much more palatable now. I can see the memes without knowing it's some girl I met in Freshers Week's birthday!

I have all notifications off for everything that way I only interact when I want to and not feel like I have to when things pop up
