Final Prediction: Who Will Win?

After the initial launch, there wasn’t much substance to engage or excite her supporters. Like Clinton, she ran a highly defensive campaign centered around 'I’m competent, and I’m not Trump'. As the Biden administration has already been rejected, she needed a distinct cause to make people turn out and vote for her.
Correct. Every other comment was "Trump is this, Trump is that" often to questions that had nothing to do with him. Michelle Obama famously warned about punching down. IE, never do it.

Harris couldn't answer difficult questions so that was her stock answer. That appeals to no-one. Hard Dems would say "fuck yeah". Reps would say "fuck you". Everyone else was saying "answer the fucking question".

The woman had 4 months to produce a campaign and defeat a juggernaut opponent. Give her a break. She was a shit candidate, but give her a break.

Disagree with this. It's very reductive. Anti-incumbent sentiment might be a part of it but she lost because the Biden administration did not convince enough people that they were a better alternative.

I agree it’s probably too simplistic, but we definitely are in uncharted territory in terms of the global pandemic and its aftermath effects on the collective psyche.

Everyone is stupid now.

Well at least Trump is going to change the laws so that he and his family are forever in power and we won’t have to have any more elections :side-eye:

Inflation aside, I think it really came down to immigration. Urban voters in so-called "sanctuary cities" really questioned the Democrats' competence.

Meanwhile, I'm interested to see what the Republicans' plans are to supposedly fix border security.

I hope your bread bins are well stocked anyway girls, because SOUP SEASON is here.

Oh poor Harris - she's going to have to count the votes on 6 January 2025. Al Gore will need to give her tips.

I deliberately didn’t get too invested in this campaign as you’re only setting yourself up to be annoyed about something you’ve zero control over when a result like this, which always seemed very possible, comes up.

What I find shocking about the numbers being quoted on the radio is that Harris’ number of female voters went down from Biden and also the volume and increase of Hispanic male voters for Trump after what his campaign had said. Sorry if I’m repeating stuff that was already covered.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when his dementia moves away from the "endless-rambling" stage to the "quiet-and-confused" stage.

The drop in female voters was definitely a shock to me.

The male Hispanic vote has been evening out across the parties for a while though. It mostly comes down to "He's talking about illegals, not us", but also so much of the commentary I've heard was about how the Democrats conflate the interests of ALL Hispanic voters into one reductive narrative.

I work in a school that's 75% working class Hispanic in population and there's a huge Trump base among their communities.

I just don’t get it. I understand that America is racist and sexist and all of those arguments, but all of my friends voted for Kamala, as did the vast majority of my family, coworkers, and neighbors. I know he has this support, but it feels so far and alien from my life.

I obviously want Democrats to do better in the future, but I can’t even wrap my head around how this happened, let alone what to do differently in the future

How many friends of yours lives on the countryside, are heavily religious or even conservative?

Sadly I have a feeling that now that those who lived through WW2 /fascism in the West have mostly died off, the basic fact applies of history repeating itself. This is "unless we learn from history", which history shows that... we don't. Once those who lived through it die off, we forget. History gets questioned or diluted (issues like holocaust denial) and we get "why don't we have another go but we'll do it properly this time". I hoped the information age would enable humanity to learn and remember but all it's done is give us a way to spread disinformation. People have translated Hitler's speeches into English through AI and gone "huh, he has a point you know" (that was disturbing to stumble across on YT). And so here we are with the Fascist States of America.

I welcome any reasonable indication of "just being hysterical". Last time America and the world survived him, but would he really be as toothless this time around especially with supreme court immunity and without the distraction of COVID in his second half?

It seems to me that America has been *itching* to just give fascism a whirl and see what happens because it's the easiest way to shake up the world order that they take issue with. Maybe the only way out is through - people have to experience it to re-learn the consequences their ancestors witnessed.

The world will go through a lot of shit and if we survive, at least another era of peace and sanity awaits what's left.

We increasingly live in a bubble. I don’t know anyone who voted for Brexit or would vote Tory.

Or at least admit doing so.

I don't know if anyone's shared this (i can't see all the picture links at work)

Tesla shares currently up 12% today
Trump media group up 5% (although it was about 33% at the US markets opening)

I for one am glad the dickheads are winning in this world.

That’s the issue though. How can we ever convince anyone or get a point across if we’re living in separate worlds from them?

There's little point in analysing why it happened, save that for the historians. Trump, MAGA and by proxy the Republican Party are whatever you want them to be. It's such a multi faceted beast, with it's tentacles spread around a super globalised world, that you can attach any meaning to it.

It's freedom of speech, but Christian, it likes good old fashioned values, so long as they suit you, it's $$$ enough to hold your nose to the cruelty, it's racist, so long as it's not your race, it's uneducated despite the elite school experiences of the rulers, it's anti ruling class, but it exists to please the bankers, it's a rapist who wants to ban abortion, worse perhaps it's conspiratorialist.

There's enough stuff there to appeal to so many people, who within the context of their own needs at the given time were happy to snub liberalism and embrace this horror show and can't wait for sensationalist breaking news updates.

We probably always were, just these events expose them. Brexit certainly showed Britain up to be horribly split, a truly unpleasant social experience. Of course it's more nuanced than that - I'm sure sociologists would be wringing their hands at such a simple explanation.

Besides, according to Strauss–Howe generational theory, we're overdue the 80 year turning point or are perhaps living through it.

I am born, raised and live in a Red state. They are mostly poor and uneducated but live vicariously through the wealthy Republicans that mirror their own hatred for anything except white men. They long for the “good old days” when the majority of them would still be the poor and uneducated even if time could be turned back.
