I really want to like Skunk Anansie more than I do. On paper they should be up my street, but other than Weak their songs don’t really click with me.
 
Oh God. Ronan and Stephen (RIP) really do not have the gravitas to handle introducing the Dunblane record :bruised:

At least it wasn’t a Dennis Pennis week I guess…
 
I still don’t think much of Mark Owen’s Child, but the wordless transition from Dunblane to that is probably the least-awkward thing they could possibly have done in the circumstances.

For a minute I was thinking "The Lightning Seeds as an exclusive?" but then I remembered how many albums they'd sold and Three Lions had just been a proper hit. Not one of Ian Broudie's best, this but he gets a pass for producing The Fall in 88.
 
Suede's "The Beautiful Ones" into Faithless's "Insomnia" - that must be the best 1-2 start to an episode in a long time.
 
Suede's shiny pop era has aged very well - Coming Up still sounds great now and they were right to mine it for singles well into 1997.
 
Reef, fuck off. The UK's answer to The Spin Doctors, the question being "how shite and derivative can music be?".
 
"Alisha Rules The World", that's more like it. I wish they'd leaned into the character a bit more but hey, it's a pop song and a jolly good one.
 
My memory tell me that "If You Ever" was East 17s last proper hit...it's actually OK but then, Mortimer didn't write it and it has Gabrielle on it which is two instant plus points.
 
Gina G's dogshit soundalike really is all the annoying bits of the last one with a tune so flimsy it would blow away if a mouse sneezed.

Watching this now and the awkwardness is off the scale.

Bjork's Imperial Phase (ie the 90s) really was stunning and all of it sounds every bit as magical today as it did at the time. As patchy as she might be now, she absolutely earned the right to do whatever the hell she wanted.

There's 4 people singing and I'm none the wiser as to which one is actually Babyface. This is what getting out of touch felt like in 1996.
 
Slade's Cos I Luv You is a banger. Absolute cracking stompalong 70s gold.
 
How did we not guess that Moby was a twat? Was it the vegan thing? Did we just assume that someone with an album called Animal Rights must be alright? Sheesh.
 
"What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted?" by Jimmy Ruffin is a tour-de-force of heart-melting 60s Motown genius. Robson and Jerome's take? Not so much. Not. So. Much.
 
Enoof. First thing I remember from 97 is Blur's Beetlebum which can't come soon enough at this rate.
 
1985 Xmas episode is just ending on BBC4.

Paul King was such an odd performer.
 
Astonishing how many of these are dead... Wright, Peel, Long, Burns, Baltimora, Abrams, Houston, Sledge, Michael, Sledge & Sledge, which coincidentally is the name of solicitors.

I guess it was 40 years ago.
