And Djokovic won his 100th title. Like him or not, an incredible achievement.

In one of those odd STATISTICAL ANOMALIES, he beat Massu to win his first title & then a player Massu is coaching to win 100.

Going to need to play some smaller tournaments to beat the Jimmy Connors record of 109.
 
I don’t mind Djokovic at all, I really admire how well he has played for so long and he fully deserves 100 titles.

Nice to see Rybakina (hopefully) emerging from the dark spell with a title in Strasbourg. Samsonova is usually a thorn in her side too and leads their H2H so hopefully this gives her confidence.

I think Paolini’s best chance at a slam was to win that 3rd set against Krejcikova at Wimbledon last year. I expect Svitolina to beat her in the 3rd round IF Elina has recovered from her recent injuries.

I think Swiatek may do better than expected but Rybakina, Kostyuk and Ostapenko all in her section en route aren’t who she’d like to have seen.

Talking of 4 in a row (and in if only land) I’m sure Chris would have done it if she hadn’t played that silly WTT instead in the 70s and it’s hard not to see Monica doing it in ‘93 seeing as she already had the Australian in the bag that year.
 
Also annoyed that I can’t just switch on Eurosport and watch like in the past. I’m not interested in any subscriptions as I’m not in enough to benefit from it. I think the subscription format of viewing does harm the sport in terms of casual spectators unless I’ve overlooked a straightforward way to view in the UK this year.

Good points re Svitolina & especially Monica & Chris - Chris would probably have put the title numbers out of sight if she'd known the future importance of slams & her & Nav would be ahead of Court if they'd known.

Monica was absolutely a huge contender in 1993, although not counting Steffi totally out either, you can't keep a great champion down for long. Mary Joe probably has a slam final less though - I wonder if Monica had been in the draw if we would have even seen her insane comeback vs Sabatini. I do think in 1993 it was Jana's destiny to lose in the final vs Steffi & cry on the Duchess' shoulder. I think she'd have gotten past Monica in the semifinal. Anything beyond that is even more conjecture than I've already done.

I think the best legal way to watch the French Open in the UK if you don’t want an ongoing subscription is through the Discovery+ Premium monthly pass at £30.99 for one month. Ludicrous but they appear to be able to get away with it.
 
Just saw that I have TNT Sports as part of my BT package (I should pay more attention to what I’m paying for) so I do have coverage after all. Hurrah!
 
Surprised to see Cam Norrie beat Medvedev in the first round. Good results for the Brits so far. 3 women in the second round of the French, and all 3 now in top 50 live rankings, don't recall this happening before in my lifetime for British women.

It's a long way from when I started watching with Louise Latimer, Julie Pullin & Lucie Ahl the top 3 Brits & none of them anywhere near the top 100.

Grigor Dimitrov retired for the 4th slam in a row. I don't think his body will allow him to continue beyond this season.

Azarenka gave a throwback to her ruthless number 1 days beating Yanina Wickmayer 6-0 6-0.

And the joint declines of Ons Jabeur & Maria Sakkari continue with them both exiting in round 1 :(
 
Wickmayer is just doing a cash grab here and at Wimbledon where she’ll retire, disgraceful effort and clearly isn’t giving tennis a second thought but can’t blame her I guess for turning up at two events for €160K.

As for Brit players I once played against Sam Smith in mixed doubles. I was a junior, she wasn’t, she was on the comeback trail following an injury break and entered our main national event in women’s singles and mixed.

Wow I'd no idea you'd played to that level. Was this before or after Sam's big Wimbledon win over Conchita?

Since her run to the Quarter final in Qatar in February Ons has only won one match. Her fitness seems to have quietly gone downhill since last summer.

^ I don’t know why but the comment reminded me of this Serena quote after thrashing Sharapova in the 2012 Olympics 6-0 6-1. :D

No Kostyuk waiting in the third round either. Let's see if Penko can win today and stand a chance of waiting for Iga in the round of 16....
 
Alex de Minaur out after being two sets up, that's a big upset as he'd reached the quarters at four slams in a row :o

I'm not a Tsitsipas fan so have been quietly enjoying his downfall. Wish it was happening to Zverev though.
 
So the top 8 seeds on the women's draw have made round 4 at the French for the first time at a slam since 2005. It does feel like there has been a bit more consistency at the top of the game lately.

Paolini now out and Swiatek in trouble... this may not age well lol
 
Pretty great houdini act from Svits in the second half of that match. Paolini will rue that second set though, she snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
 
Curious to see how Rybakina-Swiatek winds up. Elena was in god mode the first 45 minutes, then cooled off significantly. In the past, I would have said Iga will weather the storm but not so sure this spring.
 
seems like Iga has it.

Svitolina was magnificent from midway through the second set. she really kept her cool and waited for Paolini's level to dip. impressive performance
 
Fils likely to have to miss Wimbledon :(

At least he gave us THAT moment before he had to bow out.
 
the French wildcard Boisson is playing some really good tennis tight now against Pegula and is about to serve for the second set. a more fun match up than it first seemed
 
she's done it :disco: Pegula seems nice but I find her quite dull (persona and style of play). here for an upset!
 
I don't really care for Pegula, so GO LOIS - hope she can pull off the upset.

She's been playing well since mean girl Harriet Dart tried bullying her on court a few tournaments ago.
 
and Dart hasn't won a match since :D
