Belinda Carlisle - Once Upon a Time in California

Couldn’t she have recorded 6 new songs, bung in that EP from a while back and pretend it’s a new album?

Apparently she had to be talked out of closing her recent tour with lots of French stuff. Oh Belinda.

Anyway, the cover serving Sarah G. Buxton is terrific.

She sounds in good voice and the artwork is an upgrade this time around but the track is deeply unthrilling.

I do almost admire the bare minimum effort of a ten track covers album, of which three songs were already released years ago :D

On a positive note, of the remaining tracks I am quite looking forward to hearing Time In A Bottle. I think it could suit her.

Yes I’ve been enjoying that song a lot since hearing it on the IRREDEEMABLY EVIL Patti Lupone’s spotlight episode of Agatha All Along.

Air That I Breathe is nice enough, but it almost sounds like it's playing at 1.5 speed.

k.d. lang's version remains my favourite.

I quite like Belinda's version. I don't think it's any worse than Simply Red's anyway.

It’s more the song’s problem but it does take AGES to get to that chorus!

Every expense spared for the video, but nice to see her (somewhat) in motion at least. Did she even film anything for Voila or the EP from a couple of years ago?

garbage GIF

That cover photo is the only thing grabbing me so far. The rest of it is all just lazy.

She made quite a nice little video for Big Big Love.

It's so frustrating that she came up with such good material on Kismet but she just seems intent on these stupid, fucking vanity projects. I guess YOU DO YOU at that age, but I can't see how creatively rewarding all this is.

Should've phoned up Metro for a Madge cover of the same name. The gays around her should be a shamed of themselves - least of all that son!

It was on the Nobody Owns Me comp released in 2021 but I think we can all be forgiven for not paying much attention to that

It’s about right for the level of effort that’s gone into this project.

It’s a shame, it’s a nice song and I usually love her voice, but the production is hideous and she really over-eggs it.

*obligatory VoR post* - I much prefer the Wilson Phillips take from their California album.

This is really a sad situation lol

I mean I get that there’s no budget but do we really need these Covid era videos.

I can only assume she’s bored of 30 years of performing the same setlist and looking for the lowest-effort way possible to justify padding it out.
