Google says it most commonly rhymes with "wedge", but that the traditional Polish pronunciation is more along the lines of a Zsá Zsá type figure saying "get out my shvay darling". Or like quickly telling someone called Vay to Shhh.

I always knew it as Bye-sester. I heard some travel alerts for Bister and I had no idea where they meant until the penny dropped.

Is it a regional thing or had I always pronounced it incorrectly?

It's Bister. Same pronunciation as Leicester which isn't Lye-cester. I also got this one wrong for a very long time.

It must be 75+ miles from me, but I've always pronounced it Bister. Like blister without the l.

We have a rich tradition in the Midlands of deliberately pronouncing things wrong to confuse tourists. Bicester is 'Bister', Towcester is 'Toaster', Keresley is 'Currsley'; there's a village near me called Warton which is pronounced 'Waah-ton', and 'let's go to Birmingham' is pronounced 'assisted suicide'.
