Words that you don't know how to pronounce

It ISN'T? I assumed it was. (And secretly loled at the terrible family events where hordes of kids are dancing and singing along to it)

Google says it most commonly rhymes with "wedge", but that the traditional Polish pronunciation is more along the lines of a Zsá Zsá type figure saying "get out my shvay darling". Or like quickly telling someone called Vay to Shhh.

Possibly one for @lolly as I think you’re near (but my geography knowledge is pretty terrible)

BICESTER

I always knew it as Bye-sester. I heard some travel alerts for Bister and I had no idea where they meant until the penny dropped.

Is it a regional thing or had I always pronounced it incorrectly?

It's Bister. Same pronunciation as Leicester which isn't Lye-cester. I also got this one wrong for a very long time.

It must be 75+ miles from me, but I've always pronounced it Bister. Like blister without the l.

One that always threw me until quite recently was Leominster. I knew the o wasn't pronounced but thought it was like Lemminster, when it's just Lemster.

75 miles is in the right ball park 😅

I would have gone for Lemminster too

Mind you, I imagine there's a high chance of bumping into Ellen DeGeneres in Tesco Extra in Cirencester these days, so PERHAPS BEST AVOIDED

We have a rich tradition in the Midlands of deliberately pronouncing things wrong to confuse tourists. Bicester is 'Bister', Towcester is 'Toaster', Keresley is 'Currsley'; there's a village near me called Warton which is pronounced 'Waah-ton', and 'let's go to Birmingham' is pronounced 'assisted suicide'.

Poor Birmingham

Other than changing stations at New Street, I’ve only ever been there once (for a Billie Ray Martin concert - audience 5).
