It’s just another manic Monday

Just walking to work now. It's gloriously sunny but even with a sweater on it's a little chilly.

The river is high, fast flowing and looks dirty though. I assume that's all the rain of the last few weeks working its way through from upstream.

I did wonder - I think I thought it was something to do with nipples and the cold bringing them out, but couldn't quite figure why they would be in the air.
 
In labubu news, after confirming what they were only yesterday, I did discuss them with my 8 and 9 year old great nieces yesterday. The 9 year old went on a rant about demons and them being haunted that I couldn't keep up with, and the 8 year old just wasn't interested and told me she wants me to get a camera for Christmas instead.

And I didn't even need to show them that xray photo to put them off.

I always assumed it was in the context of cold. As in Jack Frost nipping at your nose.

I know it's referring to cold - it's the origin of the word 'nip' in that context I was questioning.
 
Interesting. I could believe the Nippon/Japan connection, but not then why that was necessarily associated with cold.
 
The only half plausible explination I could find was that people got a chill down their spine before a Japanese bomber appeared but even still, its a bit spurious.
 
The term "there's a nip in the air" was apparently used in WW2 to describe Japanese aircraft. It took the original phrase, which obviously existed before and it was adapted as a racial slur in the form of a pun.

There are plenty of historical texts that use it in that context.

At most it seems that if there is an issue, it's not with the word itself, but specifically its use in that phrase.
 
Either way, best to play it safe when I get into the office and say I've got nipples like chapel hat pegs.
 
I for one believe a Welsh tourist outfit is a reliable source of knowledge on cultural sensitivity towards Japanese people.

It would appear the RAF made puns from the saying during the war, so they played on the word NIP rather than the phrase itself being used in a derogatory way. FREE THE NIP.

No, saying "it's a bit nippy" has no racial connotation. Saying "it's a bit chilly" does however because it originates as a jibe against Chile and Chileans made by the US during the Pacific War of the 1880s meaning "a bit shit".
 
I think what we’ve learnt here is that the cold weather is HATE FILLED and should banned in favour of a perpetual nice warm summer
 
Well my new phone has decided it doesn’t like my Apple Watch Series 3 that I’ve had since 2017 I think. I called my phone company and the poor kid on the phone was like “wow you still have a working one?” Needless to say I now have to get a new watch :oi:
