Films you've seen in 2025

The Gorge (2025).

Just started it. Had no idea Sigourney Weaver (1949-present) was in it. I also thought it was a series so we'll see if I can stay up since I have a gym class at 6.
 
Well I'm up for the gym. Watched 45 minutes and rather liking it. I think I've sussed out what is really going on down in the gorge, or my suspicion is at least that Sigourney et al are not being truthful given that these appear to be mutated-zombified soldiers from when a a whole bunch of them went missing down there during whatever world war it was. If one of the previous snipers was murdered after saying their identity, was the clarification that they weren't a mutated(/exposed?) soldier the green light for their killing, meaning they maybe want a non mutated surviving soldier to emerge from there? So deep... literally.
 
Finished. I guess the reveal was obvious and it fell apart almost as soon as they fell down. I also found the severely thin female lead rather uncomfortable to watch. A 5/10 experience; fine for fans of the genre(s).
 
I watched Jurassic World Rebirth this evening in 3D 😎🦖 haven't been to a cinema since 2019; it was a nice experience on holiday, and a decent film. :)

A few horror movies I enjoyed recently:

The Parenting: Goofy horror comedy, I laughed a lot. Lisa Kudrow is hilarious in this.

The Ugly Stepsister: The Substance meets Cinderella, enjoyed this a lot

Bring Her Back: Not an easy watch but very good. Best horror performance of the year so far by Sally Hawkins.

I actually haven't, so will have to try it.

It's actually reminded me of a French musical set in a hairdressers that I'm sure was from the 60s too, as I gave up trying to find it and now of course the name escapes me.
 
Most recently I watched Despicable Me 4 😅

In July I watched The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) for the first time 😊 (the best bits were the Enya songs of course) on the plane, and also in late June, I watched this nice animated film, Flow (2024) that got the deserved Oscars:

It had no dialogue, some ambient music far more sparse than Enya, starring a cat and involving a sailboat. 🐈‍⬛⛵🪄 Flow (2024)

I've been meaning to watch it for 30 years

My friend and I booked a “cinema” screening of Soapdish for last night at the Rio Cinema in Dalston.

I would rarely ever venture into Dalston otherwise, but it’s only 15 minutes from work so I made the exception for Soapdish as they were hosting it as part of an Pink Palace season for LGBT and adjacent films.

What we got was a small basement with what couldn’t have been more than a 55 inch TV and about 20 fold-up chairs, with a “programmer” giving us a speech about the film and upcoming films, littered with blatant factual errors about the films he was talking about.

We won’t be returning to Dalston any time soon and unfortunately I can’t count Soapdish as being part of my cinema watches this year.
 
Bridge of Spies (2015)

Has just finished on BBC1. Really enjoyed it. That near final bridge scene really delivered suspense and style. It really wasn't action packed at all and I think that's what I ended up liking it for.

Presumably the original A Nightmare On Elm Street @RJN? Watched it at Halloween last year & it still holds up really well, especially as Freddy is a genuinely frightening, repugnant villain rather than the wise cracking cartoon character of later installments.

The ridiculous replacement with the doll in the end scene when the mother gets dragged through the door still makes me laugh though
 
I actually went into The Piano Teacher knowing nothing about it, only because Charli XCX had just given it 5 stars on her Letterboxd. I found it pretty hard to watch, but I did like it. The mother/daughter dynamic was probably one of the most interesting I've seen ever

Yes the original! I have heard that the 3rd is great so I want to watch that one
 
I just watched WRITTEN ON THE WIND (1956) and I think I'm going to EXPIRE from sheer MELODRAMA
 
I had never seen Reindeer Games before last night and didn’t even know what it was about. 2000 trashy action film about a casino heist starring Ben Affleck, Charlize Theron and Gary Sinise. I knew it had a bad reputation, but it was both dreadful and gloriously entertaining at the same time.
