Old TOTP (BBC4) (1 Viewer)

I'd totally forgotten Matthew Marsden from Corrie attempted a pop career with this dreadfully EARNEST REAL MUSIC wank.

Beyonce (& the rest of Destiny's Child) appearing on the follow-up must be one of the most odd duet combos ever. I sometimes wonder if Bey remembers it at all.

My excitement at remembering how hot Matthew Marsden was is somewhat tempered by Wiki telling me he now lives in the US and is a prominent member of the anti-vaccine movement :bruised:

3 weeks straight for Eagle Eye Cherry, Mousse T & 5ive back on after the singles had been descending for a while. It's a marked change this year & I do wonder if the faster charts to come will make a difference.

Quite an uneventful first episode.

Matthew Marsden is, if such a thing were possible, an even lower rent Lawrence Fox these days. Very sad.

Billie obviously had far better to come. Because We Want To feels like a long 3 minutes these days.

Going to the same school as Billie Piper remains my best claim to fame, I remember the hysteria when she actually made #1 :D :disco: being 9 I assumed people from North Wiltshire were always making it mainstream but I’m still waiting for the next one 27 years on :eyes:

Few weeks behind, but CHIMNEY meaning black eye I've only ever heard in context of this song. Did people really say that?

Jamie Theakston with a 90s goatee is doing things to me :shy:

She's NOT a Sylvia Young brat?

Making it up as they went along. In pre Internet era you could make up any old shit.

Is this a roundabout way of saying you're from Swindon? :(

I'd forgotten that Another Level got to #1 with their second single. In my (faint) memory, I thought they'd gotten a 911 style late-stage chart topper as a sort of reward for long service.

Nothing they did afterwards passes the hum test on the basis of the song titles.

Oh I am pleased. I assumed if you were from Marlborough you wouldn't be so circumspect.

Mansun showing up with "Legacy", I loved it along with the accompanying bonkers concept album "Six", much to the chagrin of @octophone I'm sure :basil:
Mansun....I kinda wanted to like them because I enjoyed their humour (ie the Taxloss video, the 'invisible piano' when they did "Being A Girl" on TOTP) and they obviously had a bit more ambition than they post-Britpop contemporaries. But they were, in the end, shite.

I actually really liked the Matthew Marsden song - clearly he was trying the Natalie Imbruglia route but didn’t land. I wonder if it might have done better if it were someone else singing. He is hot but antivax yuk now.

Slightly chuckling at Beyonce having to do the rigmorale of not just TOTP but that mimed video screen they had playing behind them. You can at one point see her looking around - anywhere but at camera.

Good old Billie. That and B*Witched in the same show - we really are in the pure pop era. The crowd chanting it back shows what an anthem it was!

We’re just not gonna get Brandy and Monica or Pras are we?!

Pras finally makes an appearance in the second episode!

The charts certainly have been far slower moving that I remembered. I guess it was more the early 2000s that nearly everything was front loaded.

Ha yet to get to that. 1999 was fairly rapid and tbh the tail end of 1998. I guess TOTPs not playing videos and giving those performance slots to stuff going down the charts makes them seem slow moving? There deffo have been a couple of stagnant weeks though.

Is it me or is Freak Me by Another Level the most unsexy supposed to be sexy song out there. What’s with the random string trio when they’re barely a string can be heard. Also odd one of the four is live but the other three mimed.

Oh I recall that Ghetto Supastar performance after just posting as to whether it would turn up.

Well at least Sparkle and R Kelly weren’t on and this episode could be shown!

Immortality - what a clunker to follow up a global hit with!

I forgot that Don Henley randomly charted with The Boys Of Summer again. What was that for? The Greatest Hits came out three years prior and wasn’t reissued?!

I didn’t think much of Immortality at the time, but oddly I’ve decided I rather love it!

Few "real music" songs benefitted from TOTP production, but I Think I'm Paranoid definitely feels like it lost something. The studio version had about a gazillion layers to the chorus, but it all feels a bit thinner here.

Billie Myers taking advantage of a week with lots of faceless dance hits to sneak her flop follow up in.

I do love New Kind Of Medicine. Mas Que Nada was fun - it was in a Nike ad I believe. Clearly three random girls plucked from the street to do a dance.

The crowd being more live than Another Level by the end of the song.

Linn there trying to hide a smile (how can you not smile with Life Is A Flower?). It could be worse, she could be behind the drummer. And at least she didn’t do what the bloke did and gave his back to the audience for large parts of it. Love her cba performance though.

I suspect poor Billie Myers might have come on a wee bit too sexually alarming for the Another Level-loving tween scream audience there.

I have no recollection of Charlie Baltimore even despite my meticulous One More Time research. I prefer the upcoming Deetah

I feared the silence at the end of the fade out of The Supernaturals was gonna be louder than the audience cheer. Saying that I don’t mind the song (another I can’t recall from
OMT research) not sure why the lead singer mimed?
