True, it’s round this time you had a fair few songs buck the trend and hang around a bit - a bit like we had with Never Ever, Perfect Day, Angels, Torn and Together Again a while back but just yes so at the very upper reaches of the chart.

And maybe because they never quite hit the higher ends of the chart (bar The Tamperer and Celine) maybe that also explains the longevity. There wasn’t a week where everyone rushed to buy Last Thing On My Mind/ Truly Madly Deeply/ Dance The Night Away/ How Do I Live which would leave few people left to buy it the next week and week after.

I was surprised when we got the same Steps performance two weeks running (same when OTT were on a second time). I can’t imagine either act being hard to book into the studio?
 
Regarding the long running hits, it's interesting because we had more #1 singles in 1998 than any year until that point, so in that respect the charts certainly weren't static.

And if you look at the number of top ten hits in each year of the '90s, it has the third highest (and second highest to this point) - although down from the peak the year before, which perhaps may have meant 1998 felt slower in comparison to that year specifically (?)

I wonder if it is because a lot of those long running hits were happening concurrently as @Tisch says, it just feels worse at the moment? Also very true about Run DMC vs Jason Nevins compounding it - that didn’t hit #1 until the end of March and until that point with the exception of Aqua's 2 consecutive weeks, #1 had changed hands every week so far in the year.
 
It’s deffo a slower period (Lutricia being the highest new entry at a paltry #5 confirms that). By the end of the year we were having the top ten having seven new entries
 
Boy bands always end up with a lesser, lower charting imitation, don't they? Boyzone with OTT, & now here are 5ive tribute act NYCC.

No recollection of them or this cover of "Fight For Your Right To Party" but I'd do the lead singer who appeals in a cut price J off 5ive way.
 
At least the Super Furry Animals have provided a bit of musical variety - both for this episode & within the dying embers of Britpop. I've not liked everything they've done, but on occasion they were very good indeed.

I had a 90s dance playlist on over dinner and my son was absolutely BOPPING to this and I thought it was so cute before I remembered what song it was what the lyrics were :D I couldn't turn it off at that point though it wouldve been cruel!

I'm very fond of SFA - what tune is it? What year are they on, 1998? Northern Lights?
 
Was there a remix of Made it Back that made it less DREARY than the version Bev is yelling through here? I'm sure there was.

Another example of her consistently being hampered by being far better than her material.

Do You Really Want Me easily the weakest of the Robyn Is Here singles. Do You Know (What It Takes) stalling at #27 is a true pop injustice.

DYWM is curiously one of a very small number of pop songs by Norwegian jazz-head friend will admit a quasi-ironic fondness for, but I'm assuming it's mostly nostalgia.

I remember a school disco aged about 7 when a well meaning but unaware teacher played "Push It" by Salt & Pepa which has way more inappropriate lyrics than Mousse T :D
 
Wow that first episode. Was there any performances actually filmed that year bar Bus Stop and Bev? What was that awful green screen of Zoe looking over at Robyn?

What an odd stagnant (yet fun) week. The Tamperer randomly hitting number one. Did the industry just shut down that week?

I quite like that NYCC track and got it on streaming. The BBE track on the chart run down should go on streaming soon.

The second week was of the new entires released when I was asked back (following my work experience) to help out with a stock take at Virgin Megastore.

Jo Wiley found fuming that Embrace weren’t on that week. N Tyce with the indignity of being faded out early for the chart rundown on their final appearance after Jo sneered that they would be big.

I still maintain that Gloria Estefan song which is massively lovely would have been huge if it dropped after Cher’s Believe. Shame she’s miming.

I find it odd that Natalie Imbruglia’s third single charted so low. What happened?
 
Wishing I Was There is just a bit *too* Alanis coded I think. I wonder if she'd have had a touch more longevity in the USA if she'd followed with Big Mistake there as well.

As deathly dull & generic as the rest of their output. Wet Wet Wet not available I can only assume - although they may have been mid-implosion around this time.

England United follow on in a battle of crappy official World Cup tunes. The worst thing the Spice Girls got involved in during the imperial era.
 
I know the atrocious lyrics of "Life" by Desree have been discussed AD NAUSEUM, but what WAS she thinking? Nobody stepped up at any point to say DO A LITTLE BETTER? :D
 
Ah, Silver Sun - I always liked their 70s power pop influenced indie, shame they charted highest with a cover. "Golden Skin" & "Lava" were could have been hits lost in the Britpop rush.
 
"Carnival De Paris" by Dario G amongst the best of the GLUT of World Cup related tunes released at this time. It's really lasted, too, still heard during many a match.
 
I love this era so much, but the repeat performances really are out of control.

Was Lutricia McNeal paying RENT?
