Enya quotes & quips (1 Viewer)

I just realised Enya mentioned another composer, even earlier than during Watermark, in quite a random but inspired way. 🎼✨
"Perhaps I should say that my roots are Stravinsky. Or perhaps [...] silence. I listen to that a lot as well.
~Enya, 1987

I eventually bought a copy of the magazine :-)

I also found that Igor Stravinsky had a thought-provoking quote:
"Lesser artists borrow, great artists steal."
Which in turn was stolen from Pablo Picasso :D

"On Your Shore is about the wonderful and sad thoughts that went through my head as I walked along the beach."
~Enya, c. 1988
😌

I relate to this a lot, also with one of my grandparents' resting place being by a beach. 💭 On recent walks along the beaches in Sri-Lanka I had On Your Shore in my head. 🏖♡

From this article on the guardian
"I was asking whether I should take time out to have a family [...] a terrible thing to do. Then I decided I wasn't going to pressurise myself and I've gone the route I wanted to go [...] That I'm not married and don't have children has been my choice. I don't feel I've missed out in any way.
At school other girls talked about getting married, but it was never on my list of things to do. I was looking at something else."
~Enya, 2000 ♡
(and beyond) :enya:

"After a bad day in the studio I’m dark and difficult to be with; I’ll want to be on my own. On a good day I’ll phone everyone up. I don’t have a record collection. The music I like best is silence."
~Enya, 1992 🖤 from this

I get what she means at the end though (reading what she says afterwards it makes sense). ♡
The dark and difficult bit always reminds me of the (later) Theresa May reclamation of being a 'bloody difficult woman' ☺️
I doubt the 'phone everyone up' is as jolly as that :D nice on occasion, but being on your own is often a relief. 😌

A couple of mentions of Diana by Enya:

I think this was the first occasion that they met

At my castle, I take long walks. I have to say, one of my favorite views is the moon reflecting on the water at night. It’s spectacular. All that silent glittering on the water, it’s like looking at a secret.

The spring, summer, is quite a hectic time for people in their lives, but then it comes to autumn, and to winter, and you can’t but help think back to the year that was, and then hopefully looking forward to the year that is approaching.

*(Definitely from the and Winter Came era, quote from here; 2008 is possible too.) ♡

I have mentioned this article before, German interview from 2005, and I can't quite tell if it's the translation or Enya's literal words that make her seem a bit volatile here (in a similar way to the 80s Belgian interview) but it's interesting to re-read.

This about Enya not wanting to be a gardener :D
You mean if I ever dreamed of dancing on the tables? Being a different person? A gardener maybe here outside in the park? No, if you like your work as much as I do, you don’t want to be a gardener, not even in this wonderful park.
~Enya, 2005
Enya's sister Deirdre, amongst other things, does lots of gardening things, I randomly watched this clip yesterday haha. Though I found out Enya's youngest sister (Brídín) blocked me..!

(Enya, 2005)

Haha I've heard about the 'guess the album's name' thing before for Amarantine :D did anyone here play this guessing game?

About Echoes In Rain:
It was a great day and I just wanted to sing about it. That was again a different approach but I didn’t question it. I wrote the melody and it was the first word that worked the best, it was “Alleluia”, and the rest kind of followed and blended in.
~Enya, 2016 (this article)

😊🎶

"A different approach" my ARSE

It was absolutely the SAME OLD SHIT and that was exactly why we loved it

When someone is in love, I find that they take in a lot of nature around them: the sunset is more beautiful [...] the dawn is more beautiful, the trees, the landscape, and I find that with, say, China Roses, it's very much a love song because it's asking us to look around [at] the most beautiful things that are there.
~Enya, 1997 🧡

From here (timestamped, but watch the whole clip:-)

According to Enya's quote there, I must always be in love  but I do love the song China Roses. 🤗

From a cool 'new' Watermark-era article with lots of interesting fun facts

"I don't think I'm famous. Am I? What I associate famous with is a mega thing where you have hundreds of kids outside the hotel room and you get mobbed in the street. That doesn't happen to me."
~Enya, 1989

I just found this website with some kind of paraphrased Enya quotes:

:D

But I can imagine she hopes for many of these:

And this (not sure exactly when it was published) quote about the song:

They basically ask Enya why she is singing about a Venezuelan river (Orinoco) and not the River Shannon in Ireland. 😅

Her response:

"That didn't sound right! We wanted something really cheerful and rhythmic, something children would naturally sing along to when they're on a skippy ball. Because then you also get that same free feeling you get when you sail across the world."
~Enya, c.1988-89

(I learnt that skippy ball is another word for space hopper. :D)

"He was a great guy" - Enya's thoughts on Charlie Kirk, 2025

From a cool 'new' Watermark-era article with lots of interesting fun facts

The intro stood out:

"I'm totally removed from reality.[...] I remember coming out of the studio in Artane one morning after working through the night [...] and being literally shocked to see that everything was so normal – people were going to work, going to school, laughing, talking. I had become so engrossed in what I was doing I genuinely believed there was nothing outside of that."
~Enya, 1989 😶‍🌫️

When they talk about young people today always saying 'like', 'literally', 'you know what I mean', and 'genuinely' they've been used like that for ages :D

And this (not sure exactly when it was published) [Dutch article page]

Any of her German, Dutch or Belgian interview have some interesting translated quotes and white lies though :D

(Enya's uses a different synth patch Decker :enya: and still has relevance today in a Tame Impala song :disco: )

"Oh, not in Ireland! They've never heard of emancipation there."
~Enya, c. 1989

(If this were translated back then, Enya would've be in trouble with a lot of the women back home 😅)

Enya's 2016 response came to mind regarding 'pets' :D 🐿

:basil:
(I wonder where they collected the red squirrels from?)

Not a real Enya quote/quip 😅

Moopy feels like the exception to this; maybe 3 Americans/US users here? (Also Happy Thanksgiving if any of them are reading 😊)

This magazine interview from early 2006 (almost 20 years ago..!) is one of the best, this is only part of it:

"I will have a few Christmas trees in the castle, because it’s quite beautiful to decorate. It’s an old Victorian castle, so it looks quite beautiful when you decorate the castle in Christmas decoration. Hopefully, I will have the time.

I was thinking again about an eventual Enya biopic (more about storyline/perspectives than cast) yesterday, and no wonder it felt like the late 2000s was a good time to be working on it. Obviously Enya's had more of a life since then, so I guess that's partly why it was shelved.

The reason Enya avoided Sabrina back then was obviously related to the controversy regarding the slightly revealing music video.
Ah wait, Enya did mention Sabrina Salerno (because they were all asking her about the SAW artists haha) and didn't like Kylie Minogue's kind of music at the time (the 80s SAW ones) :D
☺️

I think they cut that bit out :D or maybe it was on another page. The above is from an Australian publication, and I think the below with almost makeup-less Enya is from a UK magazine
♡
From this: When asked about whether women in pop have a hard time, she responded...
I can't tell which one is paraphrased (unless Enya was asked the same kind of thing and answered more deeply in the Australian one) but I feel like it's the UK one that shortened things.
Eny-way (from this):
"Girls in this business have a hard time. But I'm lucky because I write and sing my own songs. When I hear of people like Kylie and Sabrina who just go into studios, do a vocal and allow people to do everything else, well then I'm a bit mystified. I could never do that myself."
~Enya, 1989 ☺️🎶 📝😶‍🌫️

I just found this :enya:
♡ bless this lady
(highlighted quote from some Irish Rock magazine, can't find the whole thing online, waiting to read the rest :D )
