The UK Green Parties

I understand Labour feel threatened but it’s not really a good look for them to go on the immediate attack.
 
I'm really enjoying this messaging, and it's working. Membership is growing consistently.
 
I voted Green in the last election but I won't formally join while they have a terf-adjacent deputy. Skipping the hustings where he would have been forced to call his position was pretty cowardly and while he unquestionably has many other excellent attributes, the Greens have a history of trying to get terfs in power and we'll need to see what happens next.

Remember, Scottish Greens are a different party to the English and Welsh Greens, rather than being a "Scottish Labour" situation, and the Scottish terfs have pretty much been kicked out or left of their own accord, as far as I'm aware. Andy Wightman was definitely the loudest terf that's long been banished. They went as far as to admonish the English and Welsh party a few years ago, and suspended whatever working relationship they had with them (I don't know if that has been picked back up yet or not)

I have slight side eye for Ross Greer though, given he is quite loudly Christian, but I don't think he's ever said or advocated for anything morally objectionable.
 
Absolutely aware of that, however, one has to assume that, should the matter arise, a Parliamentary party would consist of both and that a deal of sorts would be struck.
 
Annoyingly I can't see anything on their website or last manifesto that sets out what they'd do if they had any MPs. Not that I see them ever getting one under FPTP because the SNP fills the role of left of labour up here anyway.

True but we'll find out soon enough. The SNP are messy bitches right now with no clear direction. They need to pull themselves together but Swinney's not the person for the job.
 
75,000 now - incredible.

I’ve been getting involved as a member, I joined a policy working group and found it really positive, I mean theyre the greens so you get a few parodies but mostly the group is decent people with good ideas and principles.

Keep getting invited to the local party nights out in a pub as well but not made it yet, holding off on becoming a councillor for a couple of years

They’ve now surpassed the Liberal Democrats in membership for the first time ever.

The conference is getting more press attention than usual. I wonder could this be a tipping point for them?
 
Party membership for the main UK parties:

Labour: 333,235 (down from a peak of 534,046 in 2019)
Reform: 250,000*
Conservatives: 123,000
Liberal Democrats: 83,174
Green Party of England and Wales: 80,000
Scottish National Party: 56,011
Advance UK: 36,000
Co-operative Party: 13,000
Plaid Cymru: 10,000

Reform and Advance are a bit CITATION NEEDED on their actual figures, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if both were significantly inflated.

Greens will presumably publish an updated figure soon to back up the claim their deputy leader made at the Conference RE surpassing the Lib Dems.

Your Party have claimed everything from 250,000 to over 800,000 but given the mess they're in I'd hold off on putting down anything as a hard figure. It sounds more like they're going by the number of people who registered an interest, rather than subscribed for a paid membership.
 
I wonder if Scottish Greens are getting any surge, they're last number according to wikipedia was 7,600 in 2023.

One of our generic company emails was signed up to the You Party mailing list under the name Tommys.

So I wouldn't believe a fucking word of it.
 
There is deffos a buzz around the Greens at the moment, apparently coference was packed and full of energy and optimism.

Barely registered on the news cycle, although it was a busy couple of news days.

Polanski really is popping up on every sofa on TV atm and happy to take on anything. I did see him fumble a bit over taxes, but on the whole, very good performances.

Curious to know who the 1% of Green Party members that find Badenoch favourable? Still with statistical error she's down there with Farage at 0%.
 
The sad thing that current polling suggests they'll maybe double their seats at most. Keep ploughing away Zack.
 


Bit less testy than his Labour Conference experience. Though he's not accusing them all of being complicit in Genocide, which probably helps.
 
God he's annoying. There are several better up and coming UK lefties on YouTube than Owen Jones.

His (obviously entirely understandable) horror and passion for what is happening in Gaza has made him a worse journalist. There is more to holding people to account than just shouting genocide at them, that just makes you a protester.

Going back to his discussion (I use the word loosely) with Emily Thornberry, she was saying something potentially really interesting about what information she claimed to have shortly after October 7th, that a more calm approach could have drilled down in to and interrogated.
 
They just announced that their annual Conference is in Leeds next year, so I guess they must see us as a promising target area. Makes sense, we're probably not too dissimilar to Bristol in terms of having a lot of pockets of left-leaning students and young professionals, although a lot of the constituencies where the student/young liberal vote would be strongest are also split with some quite run down areas which would be much more prone to voting Reform, so they'll probably have an uphill struggle.

I was bemused to see that of their 3 projected national 2028/9 pickups according the current polling, one would be Huddersfield. I assume they have a very good local candidate lined up, as that does not strike me as a particularly lefty part of the county.

There's a university and a big Muslim community though, so I'd guess they're counting on Gaza still being a big issue by the time the next election rolls around, and they're not pitching a plan to RE-WILD glamorous Camel Club.

Their current only Bristol seat (central) is a real mix of student land and leafy affluent townhouses, but also some areas which are among the most deprived in the country. I suspect Reform's chances depend on mobilising the voters in those areas who don't usually vote at all, because if anything I think the Labour vote which went Green last time in those nicer areas will only swing more solidly behind them, if it looks likely that Reform have a fighting chance.

I'd previously read that they were hopeful of capturing two more seats here next time, including my own.
