417 Sophie B Hawkins - Right Beside You (1994)

Probably the first SULTRY GEM. Bohemian dance pop with just a hint of Snap and maybe Madonna. Lovely.

At the time I worked as her personal hygienist. I actually had to change careers, due to the demanding nature of the work.

Love that one, loved Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover & a few of the other singles, I tried the debut album but it wasn't as :disco: as expected - never managed to get into it.

This was much better than the debut (aside from Let Me Love You Up) - if I'd gotten this one first I may have had no choice but to stan, etc etc
 
416 Royksopp - Beautiful Day Without You (2005)

More electronic art from the best thing to come from Norway since Frida and herring. Best served in an empty room with an infinite supply of gin and weed. Can be substituted with a light dab of ketamine.

 
415 Mariah Carey - Fantasy (1995)

I was definitely losing interest in Mariah by Daydream, despite the era containing her best music. Just the right level of pop and RnB, to keep me sated. An absolute rush of euphoric uplifting summer pop joy.

I've seen 2 Unlimited, with an Anita replacement. I'm positively frothing to see the real Anita Doth in action in a couple of months. Hectic techno pop fun for 1994.

I actually let the beat control my body once. I was hospitalised for three weeks.

412 Ultra Nate, Amber, Jocelyn Enriquez - If You Could Read My Mind (1998)

Putting together three house divas to soundtrack the rubbish Studio 54 film was an appreciated if obvious move. Less obvious was turning Gordon Lightfoot's 1970 folk rock track into a campy house track. They were collectively known as Stars on 54 which was a nice pun.

The video is not the version I am familiar with (I have posted that beneath), but it does feature brief images of a young Ryan Phillipe shirtless, so do what you need to do.

Basically 2 Unlimited or the British Black Eyed Peas (derogatory) for the kids of 2015. I just wonder what other bangers they could have produced if they'd have committed to one sound, instead of endless bloody, genre jumping collaborations. Stick to a sound please and make fun time hits.

This would have won Eurovision for the UK.

It bothers me that the rap version seems to have become the default version of this. It’s NOT.

410 The Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance) (1994)

I say it time and again but genuinely one of the best acts I've ever seen live and pretty sure they didn't play any of their rave stuff, up to and including this.

Containing a sample from a relatively unknown house track You're No Good For Me by Kelly Charles (1987), I've posted it below as it's rather good. The same sample has previously been used in a top 20 hit back in 1988 on Hit House's Jack To The Sound of The Underground, which I've posted even further below. Press play at your own peril. The track is fine, the video is a grotty fever dream. Of course Oxide and Nutrino went on to use it again in the early 00s, with very few merits.





 
409 Basement Jaxx - Rendez-Vu (1999)

More big beats. I much prefer this to Red Alert and all their releases (of which there definitely some bangers amongst them). My problem is I'm an absolute sucker for a spanish guitar on a house track, which has got me into problems before, but I can't say here.

Relentless, chaotic, jagged, glorious.

 
That Red Alert / Rendez-vouz / Bingo Bango run was one hell of an introduction to a new group.

This was round about the time I discovered Ibiza and it was a quite a time to be alive.

408 Bananarama - Venus (1986)

I've seen Bananarama live a couple of times, and as you'd imagine they're an absolute hoot. I doubt I was the only one here who saw both line-ups perform one night at G.A.Y. Genuinely tantalising, it felt historical. As Graham Norton said while hosting the event (anything not to see the evil pervert Jeremy Joseph for five minutes) "I have pre-cum".

There were girl bands and then was Bananarama. I genuinely hope they live to a ripe old age and live like Patsy and Eddie. The original and by many measures, the best.

Turn of the century pop was so elevated, some may say cynical and formulaic, others criticised it for lacking depth or authenticity.

I say, WHO GIVES A FUCK? FEED IT TO ME WITH SPADES!

And the reason for that diatribe - this for me is one of the unsung hereos of the genre. Simple pop production, packed with sugary addictive hooks. Mmm... perfection. I always come back to it.

I can barely believe it, but I had exactly the same experience in a local independent record shop. On tape and it was unavailable. I smell a conspiracy.

I'm thinking stock issues robbed it of a top 10 placing now!

I do like Promise Me by OUR BEV, but once you hear her constantly taking deep breaths between every line, you can't unhear it.
 
402 Faithless ft Dido - One Step too Far (2002)

I always forget just how posh Dido and brother Rollo (of Faithless fame, not King Rollo the cartoon character) are. I mean her birth name is Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong.

Anyway my favourite fact about young Dido is that she went on a tour of Yugoslavia in 1980 playing the recorder.

I always feel like this should be a defining song of the early 90s, but it's tumbled into relative obscurity. It's an absolute corker.
