At what point do we call what’s happening now a world war? It involves every country in the Middle East, Cyprus, France, Germany, probably the UK soon (and of course Iran/US/israel). That’s 3 continents…
 
I was literally thinking the same. Surely it only takes one big player politician or press outlet to call it that, and the name fall into place?

I wonder how it long it took for the names "The Great War" and "World War II" to stick? I imagine the latter was when the US joined?

I need to read more about WW2. When did the war in the pacific and the war in Europe become one? Because Russia/Ukraine is still happening and there is always room for China/Taiwan to become a part of this

According to ChatGPT (so take it with a grain of salt), it started being called WWII slowly, but Pearl Harbor/america’s involvement is what really made it stick

I also used ChatGPT and it told me the opposite that it was called WWII almost immediately :D

From a European point of view, we're taught that it's 1941 Pearl Harbour, when Japan attacked the US - an ally of the Axis Powers attacking an ally of the Allies, and hence the US entering the war. But I'm sure there's a lot more nuance to it than that!
 
It was first called WW2 about a week after the UK and France delcared war against Germany. Germany and Japan were allies so the US joined the war (I think) the day after Pearl Harbour was bombed.

Although the US had been helping the UK before that.

The beginning of WW2 wasn't particularly nuanced. It was Hitler.

WW1 beginning was a mental spiderweb of treaties and rivalries.

Also the term World War 2 has been in use since such after the Great War, in the way that World War 3 has been since 1945.

It's not as exciting as WW2. It was mostly muddy pointless battles, trenches, horrific injuries, trauma, terrible leaders, poems and experimental warfare. It's not dull, just not quite as dynamic as WW2. It was also pointless.
 
It's not a World War until I'm using gravy browning on me lallies and noshing off airmen for ciggies. Calm down everyone
 
it's been WWIII for years already no? between the classic wars (Russia on Ukraine), proxy wars and civil war all over the middle east and Africa, cyber warfare (Russia again)... various dictators pulling Trump's strings, the US overthrowing Venezuelan dictators for the oil... almost everyone is involved in a war in some capacity right now or considering the need to be soon to deploy troops to defend an ally. how is that not a world war?

do we need Von der Leyen sending an SMS alert across the EU member states to tell us WWIII is live? or bombs dropping on Europe? maybe that's why it feels more like a vague concept than a reality at present. we're balls deep already. just not yet at the stage where our lives change materially.
 
quite a damning indictment of how far society has fallen I suppose that we don't even realise WWIII is happening and it will almost certainly just rumble on until the end of humanity. gone are the cycles of war and peace.
 
I think it’s just so ingrained in people’s minds the notion that WWIII is the big fiery world ending event that it doesn’t register that it’s been going on for years in different ways. That and these events tend to be seen as starting with a “spark” and it’s been constant fireworks since like 2001

May the original vision of WWIII never happen.

I have long been of the view that apocalypse is a process rather than an event.
 
Looks more like they're trying to rattle Trump re: his 'relationship' with Putin and his differing approach to Ukraine and Iran.

This is a much more eloquent version of what I was trying to say. I should think about why it will probably only feel like war to me if the fighting is in America or Europe
