Tori Amos - In Times of Dragons (New album) (1 Viewer)

I was listening to some faves today including Bachelorette thinking hoo har, wouldn't it be funny if she brought this out (given the Paris lyric) tonight? and guess what :disco:! first time since 2014 apparently :o
 
I think I got so lucky with the setlist. it was a sorta fever dream.

10. Black-Dove (January)
11. Winter
12. Witness

15. Cornflake Girl

the run from Putting the Damage On right through to the end was just... relentless. A Sorta Fairytale and Winter were utterly transcendent. Winter got a massive standing O. it was so emotional. and that hasn't even been a Tori fave (until today). ditto Crucify.

vocals? phenomenal. maybe the piano room perfs were not the best showcase of her voice but wow she sounded insane throughout. right from i i e e e and Shush I was shocked how good she sounded in her growly lower register. the power and control. Shush sounded like something she's been performing for years, not just a handful of times.

I didn't know Give but loved it. the vocal arrangements on Pandora's Aquarium were so fucking lush. compared to the studio version it was like... underwater psychedelic lounge? really great. Damage - stunning. Black Dove - a TREAT!

the angels were so well utilised. I love how even when they had dominant vocal parts, it was always Tori's voice doing a different (usually lower) harmony providing that texture. but she was never outshone. honestly she's done something kinda genius with the vocal arrangements here.

Witness went ON and ON and god do I mean that as a compliment :disco: and for the encore I was thinking maybe we'd get God, so when she launched into Cornflake Girl I basically spontaneously combusted. crowd were REVERENT. she is loved. she is... everything.
 
captured in its full glory and very worth watching - some Tori diehards online are FREAKING OUT

Solid 4 star review in Mojo, the link below is quite pop-uppy, advance notice if reading. It says the album’s closest siblings are Scarlet’s Walk and American Doll Possee but doesn’t specify if that’s sonically or just because they are also concept albums.

I've listened to the album twice and I'm beyond happy with it. Gorgeous melodies throughout. There isn't a single song I don't like, and many that I already love. 23 Peaks is epic, and the Tash duet on Veins is so beautiful, but really it's all gorgeous to me. Another highlight in a career full of them!
 
A fellow competitor at the tournament I’m playing in has asked me to go record shopping with them tomorrow after practice to specifically get this on vinyl. It’s a hit!

I’m waiting to release day to listen and sit down and focus on it.
 
Ohh yes, savour it! I think it's the kind of album that demands a listen all the way through. Honestly, I really do think it's incredibly strong. Can't wait to buy my copy in the record shop tomorrow too!
 
things I'm reading elsewhere that are getting me hyped...

Provincetown with the harpsichord is reminiscent of Talula. St Teresa has an 80s synthy sound (??). that it's her best album since Scarlet's Walk.

the only post Scarlet album I've listened to is The Beekeeper so maybe I'll feel compelled to say the same... but does it have a song as bright, breezy or relistenable as Ireland??
 
do we know if she's drivin' in her Saab on her way home to the billionaire lizard demon? I hope it's specified. @FannyFaudrey

For me, it's already definitely my favourite album since Scarlet's Walk. It's quite Beekeeper-ish at times too.

The harpsichord is more subtly used than on Boys for Pele, but it's there for sure and wonderful to hear it. It pops up on another song too I think. Yes, St. Teresa has quite an 80s synth sound. There's actually an 80s vibe to quite a few of the songs. The chorus of Song of Sorrow sounds like it was plucked from a classic power ballad. Fanny Faudrey is probably the most jaunty song on the album. Gasoline Girls too I guess. I don't think there's anything Ireland-like...maybe Strawberry Moon at a push. But really, everything is relistenable. It's one of those albums where I keep thinking "Oh I want to listen to that one again!" and there's not a single song where I think "Oh no, not this one", which across such a long album is fab!

I actually do know this because I went on a mad rabbit hole of reading critical reviews for every album including the ones I haven't even listened to and don't even plan to. perfectly hinged behaviour!

Am I right in thinking that the HMV CD has a bonus song? I wonder where it's supposed to fit in with the OVERARCHING story.
