Tori Amos - In Times of Dragons (New album) (4 Viewers)

I’ll be in Wales this weekend, which has randomly become my favourite place to take long walks listening to Tori Amos albums. Excited by this fortuitous timing!

I mean I'm a Beekeeper fan, so prepare to hate this. But really I don't think it's wildly different to her last few albums, just...better?

Liking the title track a lot, a chorus came into bloom where I wasn't expecting it and, to be honest, structur-wise I'd probably have preferred a tighter one, but having got 4 tracks deep on drive to gym I'm also liking the reveals each track so far possesses. I got a little Roxy Music from her om track 4. Gasoline Girls started as I got into the car park. Now that I'm at the gym it's full pelt Madge and 90s dance. Will resume this later, but my modest hopes are being quenched splendidly so far.

Ok I’m enjoying Shush loads more as the album opener.

In Times of Dragons is another good one, love when the band kicks in

Omg LOVE Provincetown. Lovely melody beautiful melody.

St Teresa will need more time to bed in I think.

Gasoline Girls still a BOP!

the title track is quite lush. I love that the production has a bit more breathing space - one thing I've struggled with about Shush is how much of an assault the production is.

this is quite prog rock! I can't think of another Tori song the chorus sounds like

Provincetown is definitely calling back Pele, there's no escaping it with the harpsichord. so hooky! excellent.

Well I was just so lost in this I didn't get on the train that was sitting in front of me and I MISSED IT. Thanks Tori

It was Strawberry Moon what did it. So LUSH.

She's really rediscovered nice flowing melodies, heavy rich production. With a younger sounding voice this could easily be from 90s Tori. It's all really quite stunning.

Tash strikes again!

St. Teresa did nothing for me on first play. where is her PIANO?

at times this album feels like a band of which she is the frontwoman. there's a lot going on

OH MY FUCKING GOD AT 23 PEAKS

These blades
Shooting through my back
Are killing me
Can you take this away
Take this away
Take this away
From me?

I need your help
To change me back
Back into the woman
I want to be
So this dragon
Half-dragon, half-woman thing
Take this burden
Away from me

I like that she can't help herself but HAS include a Giants Rolling Pin/White Telephone To God/Posse Bonus type DITTY sometimes. But FF definitely seemed to err more on the side of fun and jaunty with a message behind it, as opposed to just SILLY.

I like the little kii and giggles she has with the band before launching into a couple of the songs. She’s never done that before has she?

Pyrite is a punchy banger. you can very much hear this one being Choirgirl era if it was less heavily produced.

"Sing me your songs of yearning
Song of sorrow
You've sung to me for thousands of years
Sing to me of your longing
You're longing still
But can't you see l am here?
My dear”

I think it's a strong album as a complete piece and an artistic statement. not many artists at this point in their career go all in like this.

maybe I'm more likely to listen in full when I'm in a certain mood than cherry pick, but it has a handful of bops too - pyrite, provincetown, FF. stronger together works so well in the album context.

I do wish it had a couple of tracks just Tori and her piano. the band sound is overwhelming and the production pretty heavy. but overall - superb effort.

Think this actually is her best album for a long long time overall. My personal favourite is Tempest which no one else seems to have mentioned. I think it holds together so well.
