Tip Toe (Channel 4 drama, Russell T Davies, with Alan Cumming, bumming and David Morrissey) (1 Viewer)

I now think this looks awful, but Alan Cumming, a potentially homophobic David Morrissey in full-on Basic Instinct 2 hate-fuck mode, and the possibility it could feel like a spiritual successor to Queer As Folk, all has me intrigued nonetheless.
 
Is it basically a fictional redo of that guy in London who didn’t like his gay club neighbours?
 
Isn't that quite a lot of Londoners? Is there a wiki for it or something - what did he doooo?
 
I think Cucumber aged well, I loved Nolly, Years and Years had its moments, so I fancy him for original drama - so still looking forward to this.
 
I'll watch anything he writes but right now my preference would be for a fly-on-the-wall show about him (63) and his 27 year old boyfriend. I'm glued to their instagrams. They just had a LOVELY TRIP to Venice and on the Orient Express

Russell is a talent, but he’s also an old fool i’m afraid. But hey, as long as they are both getting what they want out of it.
 
I absolutely cannot with Russell T Davies shows about insufferable older gays monologuing theatrically about the state of the world. Hard pass.

Oh they're always DREADFUL but that (and being able to dig into exactly why the latest one is dreadful) is half the fun frankly :disco:

Also the older guy just waiting for a weak mental health moment from the younger guy so he can sex with him.
 
I never got around to Cucumber. I'm sensing it leaned more on the "not very good" side. If I like this I may give it a bash.

The premiere was in Manchester yesterday, lots of friends went, I saw a lot of the carry on from outside on my way to the Sainsbury’s
 
Was he there with his lover or was he at home doing exam revision?

I think most people in their mid 60s, even those in the media would have to live in a tiny bubble not to have any friends who aren't gender critical.
 
I don't know why, but I've assumed this was focused on younger people (and that's with the Alan Cumming and Suzy Izzard ta-da/tip-toe exchange). Guess I'll find out tonight who I'll be hate-watching if I last more than 1 episode.
 
I thought it was Izzard too, but it's Paul Rhys (the butler from Saltburn) looking VERY VERY SIMILAR
 
I'll definitely be giving it a full hate-watch. Imagine the ratings will be dreadful as they seem to be for basically every gay interest drama RTD has done in the last decade or so (bar It's A Sin?)
 
I will say after the first episode this does feel like the best thing RTD's done in years - albeit that's a low bar. Much less twee and flawed than It's A Sin was (albeit just one episode in), although the way of creating connections between the characters that disagree does feel a bit ham handed. The reactionary characters' rants did start to get a bit much to take towards the end, albeit - well, that's just where things feel like they just kind of are at the minute... and there were some quite fun parts to leaven it out a bit.

I think it's helped too a lot by the compulsory 'RTD monologue crowbarred into a character's mouth' so far going into the mouth of the old trans character played by Paul Rhys, which actually makes it a lot less grating than usual, given it feels needed right now.

Also broadly helped by the characters (bar the neighbour - and maybe, who knows, the gender critical friend, but she was in it so little this episode that she's still just a bit 2D) not all just feeling like total pieces of work.
 
I really liked ep one. Subtle IT AIN'T and there's a heavy dose of cringe, but it wasn't boring and didn't feel generic - which puts it above about 90% of TV dramas right now.

I'm not sure I'm quite at the level of doom mongering the show is, but I broadly agree with what it's saying and think it's good it's being said.
