I love a good epic, but they're just much better as extended TV shows because the world building needs so much extra time to work. These big blockbusters just end up being "great gowns".
 
That's a stacked cast - Anne Hathaway is continuing to have a moment. Some of those performances in the trailer seem a little close to a SNL parody though.
 
Can't wait for the Facebook comments once the casual moviegoer finds out that Helen of Troy is (probably) not blonde and white!
 
my interest in this was zero but this trailer is fully giving Game of Thrones
 
Elle UK and US are doing massive coordinated promo for the actresses, as the 4 elements.

GQ did the same thing for the men. Their Instagram has lots more covers/editorials. I shall only post one due to the bandwidth famine I caused last time.

Well this was obviously GREAT, with R Patz/Samantha Morton/Anne Hathaway stealing the show among many great performances. Lupita EATS as Helen also.
 
I usually hate a 3 hour film but it didn’t feel too long, takes a while to get going but then starts to whizz by.

I enjoyed it! I think Nolan benefits from being tied to a vaguely coherent pre-existing narrative.

The Americanisms (“My daaaaad!”) were weird but I got used to them. Jon Berenthal really took me out though. That man just does not read ‘period’ to me.

All that fuss around the casting of Helen of Troy and poor Lupita had, what, three lines?!

I assume the John Leguizamo role would have been Michael Caine had he been well enough.

Central cast very good. I assume Best Actor this year is going to be Damon vs Cruise.
 
saw this today, brilliant movie, best of the year for me and my favourite Nolan .
 
I very much enjoyed this, but it's not without its flaws for me. I struggled a bit with the use of language like "Mom", "Dad", "Stuff" and "Fuck off". I just don't understand why they couldn't use "Mother", "Father", etc. Also, why does every single character have an American accent, including wonderful British actors like Samantha Morton? So yep, the language I found pulled me out of the world of ancient Greece quite a bit.

I think Tom Holland is somewhat miscast, and to a lesser extent, Matt Damon. Holland is still just Spider-man to me and physically just wrong for the role, especially as described in Homer's Odyssey itself. I also felt the last part of the film felt like someone pressed the "Hollywood action blockbuster" button a bit too suddenly.

Also, why is Athena(Zendaya) the only god that shows up physically? I think I'd rather have had none of the gods or all of them. Odd decision.

But yes, overall I really enjoyed it. It's visually gorgeous and it was such a treat to see a blockbuster without obvious CGI. The cyclops and Circe scenes were done so, so well.

And the messages in the film I adored; that strangers should be welcomed and that civilisation itself is destroyed if basic decency and dignity are cast aside for war. We can see all too well how that's happening right now.

It’s heavily implied she’s not a God either. She’s a woman killed in the sacking of Troy and who haunts Odysseus thereafter (psychologically) but he interprets her as Athena. It made it more interesting for me that the film never explicitly confirms if the Gods are real or not.
 
I’m also fine with the American accents/modern language and adjusted very quick, although would’ve perhaps preferred how Chernobyl handled this and just let everyone use their natural accents.

Father is no more relevant to ancient Greek than Dad it just sounds older.

I'd have preferred the natural accents approach too.

The Father vs. Dad thing...sorry, Father just sounds better to me. Anything's got to be better than "Mom" and "Dad". Mother and Father sounds so much more dignified and yes, older.
 
I mean also to be totally honest, I'd have preferred a full cast of complete unknowns who all look Greek, but I know that's not really possible etc etc.
