We need to split the world in two and put all the people who are pro-AI in one side, and everyone else on the other side, and then see where each respective civilisation is at 100 years later.
 
The pro-AI side would be gone in a year because all the main proslytisers are completely out of their minds and would cut off their own legs if they thought it would make their arms richer.

GPT6 Astra was released last night and it's apparently very close to AGI. Obvious OpenAI will hype it up but on one AGI benchmark it achieved 99.8%

From what I'm reading, it's not only very, very powerful; it's actually quite efficient at token use. This is the big challenge really now.

Smaltman is now talking about how they release the next models ethically. I do think we're on the cusp of the inflection point. We need global alignment on how we roll this out. China and America need to stop dick swinging and work together, which I'm sure Trump is all for. 😬
 
What if we invented a technology that made the world worse by every possible metric. Wouldn’t that be COOL!

I don't actually think it's coincidence that they're claiming these incredible strides forward that require major investment to bring back under control at the exact moment their beloved data centres have became political poison across the planet.

Plenty of people have prophesied that other technological advances would lead to the all-out destruction of the human race and yet here we are, 23 years after War Games, still living and breathing.

I think being an all-out doomsayer for AI is just as counterproductive as the accelerationists who think we should push ahead at all costs without thinking about the consequences. The reality is its coming, it will change society rapidly and drastically, and we need to have nuanced conversations about the middle ground rather than just reducing it to another binary good vs bad argument. But this is the state of life I guess.
 
This is what pisses me off about AI. All the language is couched in this lie of inevitably. It’s going to happen anyway so we simply must roll over and allow these planet-killing data centres into our communities, swallow mass redundancies for shit services nobody wants and cross our fingers that the computer overlords don’t decide to destroy us all because something something China something something possible cure for cancer (as if 99.9995% of AI is actually being trained on anything even remotely that altruistic!) and oh hey, yeah, remember electricity?

It’s pure gaslighting.

Even the supposed best case scenario sounds shit! AI does all the jobs so everyone on the planet is left essentially purposeless with nothing but free time? I’m sure that’ll work out well and not lead to even more millions of people going completely fucking mental!
 
I'm not completely against AI, but what concerns me most is the way all governments have completely failed to introduce any oversight or regulation. That and the frivolous "creative" work that contributes nothing to culture or society (except occasionally completely by accident:

)
 
Social media platforms show us that the tech bros can be trusted to create ethical tools to be used for the improvement of humanity and that governments the world over will keep them in check! What are we all so worried about?

Ah yes, its either absolute inevitable doom or a complete AI utopia. Ignore my point that nobody seems to have a balanced conversation about this, thank you for showing me the error of my ways.

But what’s the point of forecasts and recommendations when we know governments are not going to enforce it? AI is a space race and it’s driven by money - not ethics, not creativity, and not a desire to improve the world. AI has come along at the worst possible time when some of the most powerful and influential countries are run by populists, opportunists and tyrants.

And even if they did do it for all the right reasons, the problem with AI is much like the problem with nuclear technology - it only takes one country to ignore the other 200 and say nah, I’m going to do this my own way and I’m going to use it competitively and aggressively, and once it’s mature enough and capable of doing whatever the fuck it wants, how do you stop it hacking data banks, destroying other software, corrupting essential digital information around the world, etc?

But I’m not talking in hypothetical doomer terms, I’m talking about things that are actually happening right now.

Data centres ARE being forced on communities all over the world with minimal levels of oversight or accountability. It’s happening here in Leeds!

Companies ARE openly pricing mass-layoffs into their business models while investing heavily in AI models which, in many cases, are providing a comparably poor customer experience.

I’m not saying we need to retreat to the woods and rub twigs together, but I’ve yet to hear a single compelling argument for ploughing on with this madness and hoping the people who have proven time and again to be dangerously irresponsible actually do the right thing for once.
 
We don't even need to speculate about whether AI has produced good or bad results, because we already have evidence it's done a lot of both. But it does so on much larger scales. It dramatically shortens the gap between people's ambitions and reality more than other technologies. Beyond that, technology has no moral agency of its own.
