Urgh I've always meant to mention it before that I can't stand Robbie Koenig's commentary...but he's just so forgettable that I've never remembered to.

Mary Carillo is annoying too. The ignominy of Roger sharing his Hall of Fame induction with her.

they are both DREADFUL! I hate hate hate Koenig. Carrillo just harps on about any old random crap. I hate comms who would rather talk about anything but the tennis happening on court
 
for balance, Chanda Rubin, Lindsay Davenport and the fabulous Andrea Petkovic (queen!) have been doing a wonderful job. sometimes I've put French comms on if it's one of the demons. there was a Courier-Carillo double duty recently that was hell.
 
Carrillo stan here, I hope she recites that badminton rant at my funeral (from beyond the grave). I love my chaotic queen.

Koenig is A LOT. :zombie:
 
Watching highlights of the Tiafoe/Shelton match and Koenig is going on about doing away with the Advantage point because of late finishes.

He can fuck RIGHT OFF. He's just spouting the same bullshit that much more notable figures in tennis are calling for (he's just a chancer after all).

There are late finishes at the US Open because Flushing Meadows insists on maximising revenues at the expense of the tennis by holding so-called "day" and "night" sessions.
 
What a hateful final on the men’s side.

At least Sabalenka vs Rybakina has the added drama of this number 1 fight and Sabalenka wanting to prove she’s the ‘real’ number 1.
 
the Nike girls have been done so so dirty this tournament with that ugly ass netted monstrosity. I'd be mortified to have made (or be seen wearing) that.
 
Interesting fact: an ATP Challenger final happing tomorrow between Joao Lucas Reis Da Silva and Mika Brunold will be the first time two openly gay male players have contested a final at any level.
 
Lena really locked in for that final set. it wasn't a meltdown from Sabalenka so I guess that's progress but she must be wondering what's happening at this point. she's just awful in deciding sets.

Rybakina has a real champion’s mentality. She will lose because she doesn’t play well but will not lose because of a mental frailness which is a true champion’s stenghth. She’s fulfilled mine and @Apoca prophecy post Oz of a spotty year with some big wins.

Also I feel because Sabalenka is so loud and a big personality there’s an assumption she’s more dominant than she is. She’s had a great career and may win more slams but as we stand she has a total of 4 at the age of 28, none away from hardcourt. With her big swings she’ll always have a hard time with an elite server and ball striker. Luckily for her big serves are not that prevalent on the tour.

It’s also quite comical that her (2026) and Kerber (2016) share semi-identical ascents to Number 1 in New York after winning OZ and US - when their tennis could not look more different.

From a pure ball striking perspective, she is the most enjoyable to watch of the current crop. Just beautiful, pristine ball-striking, great consistent serve and ball toss. Poetry in motion when she’s on - but will have moments and weeks when she’s just off.

6-4 6-3 to Mika, who's on a steady trajectory. Lower top 100 might be possible if he continues. I'm not sure if Joao can get much higher than he already is, but putting himself at the Grand Slam qualifying level gives him the chance to perhaps come through a good draw at some point & play on a big stage.
