The By-elections Thread: 2025-2029 edition

As lovely as a bin getting 10k votes is

Clearly Clacton still needs to be SAWN OFF from Britain and cast off into the North Sea. Could we sell it to Sealand?

Clacton isn't entirely awful. I've never felt unsafe there, they're mostly just FAT. I mean REALLY BIG.

The constituency includes Frinton which is lovely and very middle class. Never needed gentrification, it was born that way.

Jaywick doesn't need extra commentary at this point in history.

The politics are obviously revolting, but it's hardly a one-off in this climate.

Yikes - Holborn and St Pancras. This could be interesting.

No longer an MP:

Labour expected to select their candidate by Wednesday next week.

The head of the local council is likely to run for Labour.

She came to the UK as a child escaping a civil war and the right is being EXTREMELY NORMAL about that.

A challenger approaches!

"We don’t need another MP who arrives during an election campaign, puts out a few leaflets, makes a few promises and disappears once the votes are counted. We need an MP who is present, accessible and visibly part of the community all year round.

I am asking Green party members for the opportunity to represent your home truly and properly. I’m not asking you to vote for a politician you’ll only see on a leaflet. I’m asking you to choose someone who is already here."

It feels a lot for someone who basically lives in the constituency next door over anyway.

I'm not an Urdu speaker (I understand Hindi but it's really not all that different) and I can confirm that the accent was whack.

it's hard to know what to make of these results. I expected the Greens to take more of a battering. happy Sagal won it.

It's the kind of result that gives both sides room to claim a victory, ergo it's hard to draw much from it.

The Greens over-hyped how close it was likely to be, which obviously makes them look a bit deflated when Labour win very comfortably. All their comms was indicating a 4 point margin, and then they lost by 12. However, they did still significantly increase their vote share by 22 points.

I'd say the relatively low turnout might be a worry for the Greens given they invested huge ground game into turning out disaffected voters. Was it general by-election apathy or was there a significant chunk of voters who stayed home because they in essence couldn't face voting in light of the events at Green conference last week?

It's impossible to know, so everybody's going to read what they want to into it. It's going to take a few more of these and a bit more distance from Burnham's honeymoon era to get a clear sense of whether ZiR has profoundly and permanently damaged the party.

As for Labour, will they now be emboldened to announce they're going ahead with North Sea Drilling?

It’s a terrible result for the Greens in that a win would have given them a welcome distraction from the mess of last week. They now are stuck with having to fix a party of two halves that clearly have different priorities and styles of politics. Are Adrian Ramsay and Ellie Chowns going to keep their seats at the next general election?

However, they did still significantly increase their vote share by 22 points.
An independent got almost 20% of the vote in the 2024 election, but didn't stand and backed the Greens this time round, so not really

The Green Party need to get back to policies everyone can at least understand like banning hard working families from going on holiydayz by plane or forcing everyone to go vegan.
