I'm not certain I've ever heard it. If I have, it's been passively. But then I imagine about 95% of its 'sales' have been.
 
Last Christmas is #1 with 46,188 sales. Last year it had 48,643 sales in the same week.

Other comparisons for this year and last year:

Mariah 43,007 / 44,339

Music Week singles out Kelly Clarkson going top 10 for the first time. Its total sales are now 1,877,597.
 
So basically it's not so much that people are consuming less Christmas music, but more that the weighting has shifted, and Spotify's quest to make Bobby Helms a thing is working
 
Shane MacGowan's death lifted the Pogues numbers last year - this is a more normal year for them, I assume.

Similarly, Band Aid 40's impact has been temporary with it drifting back to a position similar to previous years.

Wham's physicals came out yesterday but I have no idea how much use that actually is in this day and age. If they sell one of every format to 1000 fans, that's a 4000 sale bonus.
 
I doubt Wham will shift a huge amount of physicals. Mariah last week shifted 370 CDs, 686 7", and 378 12". Add 699 downloads, and the rest is all streaming.

Slightly surprised they bother, to be honest.
 
If they could hold Gracie off this week then I assume they are a done deal for next week and thus the Christmas #1.

Expected and fine, but how utterly boring.
 
It's crazy to think you could get decent odds at any point after it played out the last few years, isn't it?
 
Just watched the BBC documentary about 'Last Christmas', pretty good, skated very neatly around the fact that Andrew Ridgeley did literally nothing on it. All a bit :cry: towards the end.

Interesting that Lola Young has kicked Kelly Clarkson out of the top 10 in Christmas week

I'd wager on her getting a 2025 #1

It doesn't surprise me in the least that Tom Grennan has only got himself his first top 5 hit because of Amazon corporate shenanigans. He's always struck of being someone who the industry really wanted to make happen, rather than it being natural. He's very ITV / Capital FM coded, and he's already had all of the usual suspect dance collaborators thrown his way (Calvin, Joel Corry, Chase & Status, Ella Henderson).

Almost as if she was foisted on us the way Tom Grennan has been, isn't it?

Interestingly Spotify has installed her as track one in their Christmas Hits playlist as well today, after dropping her out of their top ten after the chart last week. They seem to be changing it every couple of days this last week.

I always suspected Kelly Clarkson was evil

Mark Ambor (one of the current ho-hey-banjo brigade) similar seems to getting promoted atm

The current Spotify playlist really gets more GRIM with each reshuffle. 50% terrible 1950s American jazz / 50% outright HATEFUL. You have to scroll very far down to find the good stuff.
 
Oh let’s be clear, Kelly’s Xmas song isn’t exactly forced on us - it’s very popular in its own right. It’s clearly a ‘current’ classic (rightfully so in my opinion), and the fact it’s charted one or two spots higher than normal is here nor there.

No, I was talking about Kelly. Yes, i was certainly exaggerating, but I maintain the thrust. That song has become the hit it has to not an inconsiderable extent because of the hugely preferential Spotify playlisting it has received over the last 7 or so years. Admittedly it's not the only one.

I'm sure it does get preferential treatment for being a big American hit, but Underneath The Tree is absolutely a legitimate modern Christmas classic. What other original Christmas tunes released this side of 2010 have had remotely the same ability to compete with the standards?
 
Only Ariana, I suppose. Who has had pretty much the same preferential treatment with a considerably weaker song.

Yes I did think of Santa Tell Me, which is probably close. But I agree, she probably benefits from being a bigger/more current star on top of being American. The song definitely isn't as strong.
