22 dead at Manchester Arena Ariana Grande concert bombing (1 Viewer)

I've often thought a music event would be high on a target list. Lots of young people enjoying western decadent sin.
 
If there's one small silver lining, is that feeling of leaving a concert as a music fan, is one of total euphoria and you're on cloud #9 because you've just seen YOUR favourite pop star before YOUR favourite songs and nothing is better than that. Those 22 girls, boys and queens would have been a good place in the seconds before they died.

Of course some of the survivors who outnumber the dead will struggle with that joy/ terror contradiction.
 
It's so sad. It's so close to home. I can't really process it.

There are going to be some young folks (including Ariana) who are in some way fucked up by this. A former colleague of mine witnessed the Glasgow bin lorry incident and has been in many ways fucked up by the trauma since (although she seems good at the moment).

Yes, it's almost surprising that they haven't done it earlier, or more often.
 
Strange observation but the fact that there are kids still stranded at Holiday and Premier Inns in Manchester with "no way of contacting their parents" seems odd.

I mean, even if their phone batteries are gone, there is surely someone with a charger to lend so they can call home? Another thought I had was how much of a contemporary issue it is. Even when very young, I knew my home phone number from memory.

Quite a few have been reunited now apparently. I think it was more a logistics issue rather than anything else.

I wonder if they will carry on or cancel the Manchester city games which are due this weekend - an athletics track through the streets of Manchester and top stars running.
 
Some people on Twitter are sharing images of supposedly missing friends who in reality have nothing to do with the attack apparently to gain retweets and shares or to harass specific people.:manson:
 
I went to bed last night as the story was breaking. I was hoping to wake up to the news that it was a loudspeaker that had exploded.

I hope they don't cancel it.

The trouble with these attacks is that they are so very random and unpreventable (particularly the times when someone just drives a truck into a crowd of people) that places ought to make a strong effort to carry on as normal.

At a time when twitter can be an amazingly useful tool for good, it's sadly inevitable some people are going to be complete wankers with it.

It beggars belief. How distant can you be to use something like that to harrass or irritate someone.
 
Beyond horrific.
I wonder what consequences it will have on the security management at arena concerts.
I suppose there's not much more that can be done though... Even if you'd let everyone go through a metal detector like at the airport, there' would always be a risk that a stupid motherf*cker decides to attack in front of the arena.

Holiday Inn and Premier Inn have gone public to say that they didn't take in a load of unaccompanied children. Why do people on Twitter even bother making up this bullshit to begin with?
 
This has ENRAGED me. I've had similar happen, journalists turning up at my parents house, and then years later on my own doorstep, but to hound someone in such uncertainty is beyond disgusting. There really should be some line between free press and personal intrusion.

And as Penny has pointed out, all the counterproductive misinformation is a problem too. I've resolved to shut the fuck is and stop sharing unless the source is the police, basically.

There's an article being shared on FB with a witness account from a guy who describes helping a little girl who'd had her legs blown off. The news is just going to get worse now isn't it . Barbaric.
 
I can't even. I'm not feeling very well so I'm sure I'm particularly vulnerable but I've just cried myself silly over this.

It's horrible beyond all understanding. :(
 
Not that it's a debate for here, but suggestions that she's not that big of a star seem a bit odd to me... she's selling out two shows at the O2 this week. That's pretty big.

The only reason we might not think she's as big as someone like Christina Aguilera was 15 years ago, is because we're 15 years older. She was the 2nd most streamed female artist in the world last year.

I imagine we will see more of these kind of attacks outside of London where the effect and fear will be even more acutely felt than in the capital.
