"If" is her best music video/song package for me, maybe along with "Love Will Never Do".

honestly every single time I listen to this opening run of songs I just feel this sense of extreme DISBELIEF at what I'm hearing. like it's too GOD TIER to actually be real. music just doesn't GET ANY BETTER!

If is a PURE HIT OF ADRENALINE. it's filth. completely and utterly obsessed with the grimy, chaotic, industrial production of these uptempos. They all still sound incredible.

I loved that era of spunking the big budget on the video for the second single.

I still think it's a ridiculous misconception that she didn't in the first place. She sang on all her albums right up to The Velvet Rope. That was when the whispering started. And even then she let rip on a few tracks.

Nelly R. Suedey fact: I used to think that was her doing the operatic bits at the time. As we all know now though, Miss Minogue is the only pop vocalist with an operatic vocal range.
 
This Time really should have been a single, except it really didn't NEED to be, with the other THIRTEEN choices on the album...

she had just turned 27 when this album came out. and while being a conscious coming of age album it also seems a lot more adult than what most of today's popstars are putting out in their mid 20s. it just radiates this supreme confidence which I guess is kind of the interplay between her age and experience and the incredible creative fire power she discovered with Jam & Lewis. I mean these songs just fucking GO FOR IT! they're so experimental for a mainstream pop/r&B icon. it's a joy to behold.

and This Time is the greatest song of her CAREER. :disco:

The RANGE between the first four tracks alone is blinding.

I would've liked to see them try and push "This Time" as a single at her peak instead of "Whoops Now" or something. The public never really saw this side of her.

In fairness, love, if you want experimental, then Control knocks it out of the fucking park. No one had heard music like that album AT. ALL.

Janet was far from "safe" but it wasn't exactly out of kilter with what was happening in R&B at the time. But it was an artist at the absolute peak of her powers, for sure.

No. I've barely dabbled in JJ. I traditionally find her terrible, but as I say I've been more inclined to play her stuff in recent years.
