a moopy eurovision game

How should this work?

  • Countries - artist must be from that country

  • Countries - artist must have an association with that country

  • Countries - just for fun - can just be applied to any song

  • No use of countries at all

Results are only viewable after voting.
Why complicate things? Let everyone choose whatever song and country they want and the songs don’t even need to be from said country.

I don’t see the point in having countries then. So say someone picks Little Mix for Latvia. It’s a bit pointless. I think half the fun is the challenge to find a song that fits. If it’s a free for all it becomes a bit boring.

I think if we’re gonna cosplay Eurovision then we have to be willing to stretch our imaginations to a Latvian Little Mix.

The challenge of finding pop from SOME COUNTRIES kinda takes away the JOY. This is meant to be FUN. Why not do a FREE FOR ALL TO START WITH, see how it goes and then start getting specific. We're only here for the voting AFTER ALL.

Well there’s no point in having countries then. And that takes away half the fun. So there’s no point in calling it Moopy Song Contest. It’s just the same as A Song For Moopy then. If you want a free for all then bring that back. If you want countries then we do Moopy Song Contest. Your choice.

I'm not spending hours looking for Latvian pop. That sounds boring as shite. I'm out. You've kinda ruined it.

Actually, to make it easier. I’m out. You guys can do what you like. I only tried to make suggestions but fair enough. Good luck with it!

I've played this decades ago in several forums, in some you even had to create a flag for your made-up country, all very insane and childish but fun back then. As far as I'm aware, only hardcore eurofans keep playing 15 years later, you have an assigned country and you have to move heaven and earth to find that Luxembourgian artist that wasn't used in the previous 50 editions.
I find it all very exhausting.

How difficult can it be to say have 20 countries and everyone is allocated one - either by choice or whatever and you find a song from that country? we can
Keep it to bigger counties like Sweden, Norway, UK, Canada etc. so no Latvia, Myanmar etc unless you want a challenge. Don’t have to have any rules on the first one about year, etc just a song where the singer or at least one member of the band is from that country.

For me there’s no fun in having 15 songs from British artists and a smattering of ones from elsewhere.

I’m not saying we need to be hardcore about it rules wise like the ones you were in Alla, but I think having some sort of rules for the selection process helps make the whole thing a bit more of a challenge. You’re perfectly happy to all be challenged in stuff like Scavenger Hunt so why not here?

Guys do you want to be like the real EBU or do you want to just sit here and argue?

OK YOUR VERSION SOUNDS GREAT.

Kala, because these games only work in the Eurovision bubble, where they're willing to find the ultimate Austrian girlband, where they have a lot of knowledge due to watching every single preselection, and where they love rules, lots of rules. For the rest of the people it's exhausting and boring. It's like if instead of general knowledge questions in Family Fortunes I ask for a lot of things where you have to do an exhaustive research, people won't play.

Not that a game where people choose random songs and you have to listen to them and vote is much better.

The fun part is the ranking and voting. So just submit a song you think is great and see if you can qualify to the final with it from your heat. It doesn’t need to be more complicated than that. It’s about MUSIC

My partner and I play it quite a lot - we’ll both choose 10 songs we really love and then we’ll randomly draw them into heats. We rank them and two go into the final from each heat. One time we rang @VoR to settle on a tie. It’s a great lil non-screen game to play with wine. The last winner was MOI...LOLITA by Alizee

Quite. I'd happily do one with UK Number Ones!

I'm only in it for LARKS. Not a fun draining and rule heavy event. A country one is totally possible but not for EACH EVENT.

Maybe I'm missing the point. I really didn't want to come in here and provoke anything, cos it's a neat idea really. But I now feel victimised because I didn't watch X Factor Malta.

we can let people choose a country/represent their own country and then we can add a few more to the mix and give them randomly to people who don't want to choose?

everyone wins.

RIGHT, now I am a mod, I am going to take this forward. I've been thinking about it and I am proposing this for a first go.

This is a work in progress, so comments are welcome.

MEMBERS
- All Moopy members are eligible to take part
- Those interested select a song, and artist to compete

SONG ELIGIBILITY
- The song can be from ANY artist, any year and any language but the only stipulations are:
- The song must not have taken part in Eurovision
- The song must not have taken part in any National Final or been in the running for selection (eg the Swiss online vote)
- No cover versions are allowed

ARTIST ELIGIBILITY
- Artists who have competed or have tried to compete in Eurovision are eligible
- Only one song per artist is allowed. First come first served. If you select an artist that has been chosen already you will be asked to select another.

COUNTRY ALLOCATION
- The artist or at least one member of the band must either come from the country or have links to that country, eg family comes from there, they live in that country etc. The list is not exhaustive but you cannot have an artist randomly representing a country that they have no links at all to. When submitting your entry you will be asked to prove the eligibility. Only one song from each country is permitted. Perhaps we also allow the country the songwriter(s) come from to be included in the country eligibility
eg you could have Dua Lipa representing either the UK, Kosovo or Albania due to her being born in the UK and Kosovo or Albania as her parents are Kosovan Albainans
If her song was 'Don't Start Now' she could represent Norway as one of the songwriters is Norwegian.

COMPETITION STRUCTURE AND VOTING
Depending on the number of entries, we may have semi-finals or a straight final. This will be decided after the deadline.

Voting will be 50/50 between jury and televote:
- Juries will be the competing entrants. Voting is compulsory. Non-voting means disqualification.
- The televote will be other Moopy members who are not taking part in the competition.

There will be a period where people are allowed to research their entry and then the submission period will open on a certain date and time. This is to allow everyone a fair chance of having the time to select
You will have to send the country, artist and song via PM, and wait for acceptance. Once accepted, you will then have to send a YouTube link, mp3 of song, photo and short bio.

Some questions I have are:
- Should the submissions be anonymous?
- When should we run this?
- Perhaps everyone sends a few options to allow for any countries or artists already being chosen?

I appreciate the effort but can’t we just send a YouTube of ANY song without having to research all the country links? I think it’s just easier if people just send a song they like, and that’s the only rule.

I’ll give you an example, my partner and I played last week and after each choosing random songs we jumbled them up and one heat looked like this:

1. Sister Sledge - He’s the Greatest Dancer
2. Lolly - Pre Sempre Amore
3. Pays de Deux - Rendez-Vous
4. Morrissey - Suedehead
5. Strawberry Switchblade - Since Yesterday
6. Lady Gaga - Hair

And then we listened to them in that order and gave points and Sister Sledge and Pays De Deux went to the final.

I think if it’s a celebration of just songs people really like then it’s more likely to be FUN

In that case, that is a different game. That is more like A Song For Moopy. No countries, or Eurovision theme, just songs.

does it matter that our song choice has been posted about on here already?

I think the only stipulation with A Song For Moopy was that it could be anything as long as the song itself had not been discussed on Moopy.

If there's no appetite for the Eurovision style competition then that's totally fine, and we can park it here. If someone wants to relaunch that A Song For Moopy instead, then they can go ahead. I think it was Samuel who ran it previously?

it would be quite nice if there were fewer restrictions on the songs (even though I'll feel guilty cos I want to pick something somebody else posted and which I'm currently obsessed with) - as long as people didn't go with the absolute obvious e.g. Dua Lipa

It's not the same as a song for moopy though. That was full of rules as well. A guess a country WEAK LINK could work.

I’ve sent my request, but I can already say that I won’t be able to send anything other than a Youtube and Spotify links.

Spotify/Youtube is fine then. I guess everyone here is fine with streaming. I've played similar on another forum and there are more luddites there. Though if your song is rare it might not be online, so we'd have to upload it to Youtube so we have it on a Playlist.

@Suomi I think your idea is cool, although I think this would be a different game. Those songs are pretty mainstream, I think this way is fun to discover new music.

If there IS a success then we could have themes eg 90s songs, dance anthems, power ballads etc, but the first one is anything goes to see if it is a success.

I propose countries are SECRET, so we don't know who is representing who. Although if you think that it should be open then I don't mind.

Oh secret please. Send them to you and then drop them as they arrive.
