a moopy eurovision game

How should this work?

  • Countries - artist must be from that country

  • Countries - artist must have an association with that country

  • Countries - just for fun - can just be applied to any song

  • No use of countries at all

I like all the ideas up to the mp3 thing - I haven’t dealt with mp3s for YEARS. Also when you download them you can right click and see the artist and song info anyway.

Pro is it's a bit more traditional song for moopy and I like the anonymity aspect
Con is creating MP3s and downloading them is a massive ballache. The Spotify playlist for round 1 has been amazing

Also, if the songs are going to be anonymous, shouldn't there also be the traditional rule of not a song that people know or has been mentioned on Moopy before? No point submitting SOS by ABBA if you then only refer to it as Secret Song No. 5 representing HONDURAS.

Yeah you can Shazam everything if you needed to. I certainly would.

Yeah I’m not fond of the mp3 idea and I hope there won’t be a theme as limiting as having a person’s name in the song title.

What did we do in the past? List the song name and artist, but just ensured it was obscure? Because Shazam and a song's metadata would have been true points for back then also.

It's been quite a while since we last did it to be fair.

Yeah, I think I literally took part last ten years ago (and crashed out of my heat with 0 points and everyone moaning that they knew the song) :oi: so my memory might be hazy. But I'm sure the songs were just presented with the Artist and Song name. It was just who submitted it which was anonymous. Much like we're doing right now. I think we even did it by Youtube.

I think that works better than 'blank' MP3s Kala. And I like the idea of a theme to see how people interpret it and what people can find, but agree it can't be too limiting.

I'd clear all the metadata tags from the songs before I reuploaded them. Making the songs secret also makes it a bit more fun to work out who it is, and also means people are not going to be influenced by a fancy video or by a name. You can Shazam if you want to, but it’s more fun not to.

I know we all love Spotify although some of us like @octophone don’t. but it really does NOT have everything, perhaps most stuff released in the past few years, but it’s patchy for older stuff. I know when I was searching for my song for Ag’s round, quite a few
of the songs I wanted to submit were not on Spotify or didn't have a YouTube video, so that itself is restricting in effect. This way means that it might not be 90% of songs released in the past 2 years or so, as the contests would end up being very samey.

Also, it's not THAT difficult to get an mp3, if it's on YouTube or Spotify you can get an mp3 from it.

I just thought it would be a little bit different. Sure it might take a little bit of extra work to submit a song but I think it would pay off. But if we’re not up for it, then fair enough.

I'm sure it's not "that difficult" but honestly if you asked me to download an MP3 off youtube now, I couldn't do it without googling. In the days of Spotify and Amazon Alexa etc just seems a bit too much work. For you as well if you're going to clear all the data and upload them all surely?

To be clear I'm WELL UP for another round, and up for themes, but MP3s would put me off. Not having a go, just you asked for comments.

I’m all in favour of a theme, definitely.

The anonymity aspect is interesting but I don’t know what purpose it would serve that the countries in this round don’t already.

Although MP3s would be a ball ache, I was hamstrung by the fact that the song I most wanted to send isn’t on Spotify, so I can see the benefit there.

Would it not be easier for the people who can't find the songs on YouTube to create a quick blank video with the song in the background using the mp3, rather than having the vast majority of people who do have their songs on YT or spotify digging up mp3s and sending them to kala?

The thing is it’s a song contest. Not a video contest. And a good slick video is going to get more points for that than someone with no video or someone with a horrific video. See the two twinks in the current contest for Cayman Islands. I’m sure it’s going to lose points for the video than if it was audio only.l

Mp3 is a terrible idea. I could get on board with the rest, as long as the themes aren't too restrictive. I don't wanna scrabble around for entries, I wanna send stuff that sparks joy!

I’ve had two ideas shot down in pieces now so I think it’s best if I bow out as a host and let someone else give it a shot for the next one!

Yeah and part of the fun for me is that I want to send something I myself love and see how others react. If I have to send something only because it fits the theme it’s less exciting.

One thing I'll say about the current round of the contest is that I really enjoyed the video playlist aspect of it - being able to put that on my TV at the allotted time and post with everyone was my favourite part, it made it feel like a Eurovision rewatch! I've always been more into the presentation than the scoring with this sort of thing, though.

Oh @Kalabaliken :(

for my two pence, anonymous players is good, anonymous songs, I don’t really see how it can be fun enough to justify the faffing.

I’m in for themes!

it’s not you being shot down, but you asked for feedback and we want the game to succeed! Keep your idea for a theme, I think you wanted semi finals too? - keep that, and then just let people work with that. The mp3 idea is valiant but really tough to work with, and unfortunately at our core we are lazy hedonistic internet homosexuals who love our YouTubes.

I don’t see why it’s even such a big problem if people seem to prefer Spotify/YouTube anyway. Less hassle for everyone including Kala. Kala himself won’t get to send his very rare and obscure mp3s anyway if he’s the host.

games/initiatives really have to work for the people. there's no need to bow out of something if people are telling you that certain aspects of it are unworkable.

better to do that than people accept everything then don't participate at all (or worse still, ignore all the rules and create more work for you)

I had no idea quite how much of a minority I was in by still using mp3s!

I missed this part of the drama, now I understand why Kala doesn't want to run it :(
