AS5 E02: I’m in Love!

I didn't say Eureka got a positive edit. I said she handled it better.
 
Shea’s outfit was fucking amazing, just another level. Blair has come on leaps and bounds since series 10. Feel sorry for Ongina, she is LOVELY but just not up to same standard, though how much of that is down to less $$$?
 
I have a feeling the Lip Sync assassins who are series winners will win and the others the AS5 contestant will win. Calling it.

Well well well
I think the lipsync assassin coming for some assassining (:D) is really working, the gaggery of Alyssa & Shea, it’s a great chance for some (on paper) legendary fantasy lip sync combinations. Even if Alyssa didn’t quite live up to the rep. It was great though. Even Shea’s pose waiting for the reveal curtain :D

the song challenge was booger boots though, 9 verses all the same might have worked if the song is better, but what song would be good with 9 verses and 3 choruses all identical?

team Blair were good because they chose interesting/funny crushes, it doesn’t have to be real. Team India got more mileage out of their fairly ordinary picks (except India. Justin? Yawn.. was that a Britney/Derrick snipe?). I don’t get what Michelle didn’t understand about that though, Britney loved Justin so she’d be a rival... oh well

the second half was a lot better, even though the runways were rather House of la beige, ugh...
 
This thread took a weird turn, are we angry at Cracker for not getting death threats? (the day after the show too, we found all the rest out in hindsight no?)
 
Anyway:

1) Shea - Last week was a bit of a lukewarm start but this week she definitely showed her All Star - The lipsync! The runway! The looks! I'm glad she's coming to slay, I was a bit worried that she was the default winner despite that ordinary Week 1.

2) I always stan Juju, I'm waiting for her big moment. Reading was great, she's just a lovely All Star. The runway was great, her perf was ... alright, her apology to Mayhem was pretty genuine. I'm really happy to see her here, I hope she has a moment soon.

3) Alexis - Aside from the top 2 I wasn't sure where I'd rank the rest but Alexis is reminding me of what I loved about her in S3. Funny and watchable.

4) Blair - Doing well so far, I don't think she's being particularly cunty as people seemed to say last week. I was appreciating for her and Shea's take on the runway (even if I didn't really like the pink). I think Gigi is doing the same schtick and better, but I hope she can do something impressive soon.

5) Cracker - I don't feel like ranking anyone else particularly high, even if I'm enjoying the season. I knew watching this episode that the peanut gallery would come in guns blazin' and what do you know? I'm interested in what she will come up with next challenge-wise, but it was a rough episode. I always liked her brand of humour, and sympathised with her on S10 just being too worried about how she's perceived. But AS5 is NOT the rudemption I was hoping for. The talent show was pretty good, the runways decent, but she's going down. I think SOME posters are reading plenty into what she says (or just totally fan-fictioning stuff she hasn't). She's right that this is a contest of relationships too, and she's blowing it. Coming for Ongina was a stupid call, and her apology didn't seem to do it.

6) Mariah - Still coasting on last week's talent for me - I'm interested to see what she's going to do next, but this week was a bit lacking. Not Bottom 3 but she needs to bring it. I hope next week's runway has a bit more chance to be creative rather than 'just' glamour.

7) India - I questioned them bringing her back, I didn't like her much on S3, but she really served it last week. I don't know what else I particularly need/want from her next, especially as Derrick is gone and that seemed like a main catalyst for them both being cast I think. She's good but..

8) Mayhem - I really thought she would bring it more after she got sent home early before. But she's doing the same thing again, blending passively into group challenges, going off on the talking heads but not doing anything about it. I wish she would bring the Mayhem from the talking heads into the actual contest. At the moment it's more of a misfire than Miss Drama.

9) Ongina - Well... I mean of course she's likeable, I think this is a very likeable cast (Cracker notwithstanding :D), but how frustrating it's been to watch her not really DO anything of note. Her entrance look was amazing, I wish she'd saved it for a different week, did she think she might not be around long enough? Oh well. I find her post about Cracker a bit weird a year later - Cracker's apology wasn't good but it was honest I think, did she just sit on that and not deal with it for a year, then post it online? It's a bit strange to me. As were her comments about going home when she asked everyone to vote her off (and did it herself!)
 
I really love this cast (Cracker aside), but it really is a case of Shea and...the rest isn’t it :D

I’m mad at Mayhem, she is SUCH a good queen - why is she not bringing it. WTF was that ugly ass runway.

I wish Derrick had stayed for this week, she could have been QUITE ENTERTAINING
 
So sad to see Ongina just give up two episodes in after waiting for eleven years to come back. And with next week looking like it's a comedy/personality challenge, she could have really excelled and given the audience something to love.

Based on that comedy/personality element, I'm expecting either India or Mariah to go next week. And maybe a Jujubee win? I'm fine with Shea winning the season being a foregone conclusion, but I'd like there to be *some* sort of a race going on.
 
Oh and Alexis Matteo has been a nice revelation. Doing her own thing and injecting her own personality into each task - it's working so well for her.
 
I've always like Alexis, so it's no revelation for me that she's a lovely queen as well as being talented!
 
I've always loved Alexis. She does feel like she's from a different era, though, quite old school, but it's lovely to see her shining here.
 
Can't say I'm a huge fan of what she brings to be honest, but at the same time I do like the fact that she has the opportunity to do it.
 
Shea has gained just over 100k instagram followers since the reveal. Cracker 36k.

Of course we aren't, nobody should be getting death threats! The point is that when black queens were portrayed the way Cracker was in this episode (or even less harshly in many cases), the fans weren't out en masse trying to explain away their behaviour and armchair diagnosing them as being on the autism spectrum(!), they were getting threats and being treated extremely harshly. There's nothing wrong with wondering why there seems to be a double standard there, and they way you're painting it is actually a bit insulting.

This ain't it, Didds.

We've seen it time and time again, black queens getting an immediate pile-on when they do something 'controversial' on the show, that's much less mean-spiritied than what Miz Cracker has been up to. And yet in this case we see people bending over backwards to excuse her behaviour.
 
Where does one read about the death threats, is it on reddit? Who is the queen of colour at the receiving end of this bile? Shea is levitating and occasionally touching the ground at their level just to be a sport. I'm actually in awe of her kindness on top of her serving every second when in drag (whoever said about the look behind to see her "assassin" was spot on, not to mention her deadpan "sure"). I didn't think her talent show quite hit the mark, but those close-ups of that warrior hooker mask would make Hugh Grant empty has bank account and balls in seconds.

And her concern for others is not even phoney like Cracker thinking she is in control of the whole edit - how on earth did Bob have the patience, or was it simply a case of it being too late to distance herself? I didn't find her that bad in her original season, but her joyless vacuum of narcissism is more off-putting than any other queen I can think of, except Cynthia of course (*shudders at her shuddering coocoo*). It's just so odd, but I commend his inability to grasp how he is coming across all the whilst stressing about how he is coming across. To think he pitted himself against Aquaria. Aquaria just pitied him.
 
Ok, I didn’t really write that very well. I mean that picture posted had an of-course very valid and awful point. I just thought the implication (by the maker, not you) was a bit weird at first look.

Cracker was stupid and wrong, and the ideal ‘answer’ (if any were needed to contestants‘ drama on tv) is that NOBODY is raked over the social media coals and getting shit to the degree that POC queens have consistently been.

I think I might just be a bit Drag Raced out cos I have not loved either episode and all of you seem to be loving it.

it doesn't help that I really really hate Cracker, have zero interest in India and to an extent Mariah and Alexis. Also Mayhem is just so meh this season so far - I like him out of drag more than in.

Leaving us with Jujubee, Shea and Blair. They are such an obvious top 3 that I almost hope something dramatic shakes it up soon (like Shea being put bottom 3 and the queens shadily voting her out in an alliance).
 
Manilla's situation was....I'm still looking for the right support group.

Ha - I don't think she will. But I'd almost like it because she is so far ahead of the competition. This comes from having half the cast made up of people came no higher than 5th in their seasons (Ongina coming 5th out of only 9, Mariah and India coming 9th and 10th in their season!). They're never going to come close to winning an All-Stars season.
 
Do we think this new twist is a way to limit the chance of a rogue queen knocking out the front runner? I mean it won’t stop a lip sync winner doing it, but AS3 and AS4 both got a lot of stick because the winners weren’t the deserved/ordained ones for one reason or another. I mean that wouldn’t have stopped Ben leaving, nor Naomi booting Manila so maybe I’m wrong (probably)
 
I think it’s both a way to shake things up and to prevent having the front runner sashayed away.

They will of course never reach the heights of the cast of AS2 (unless they do a winner season) and they’re really scraping the barrel with this one, but having a mix of minor queens might give us some entertaining drama and give them the time to shine.
 
They potentially could reach for AS2 levels again. But they would need to rest All Stars for about 5 years to give it any chance of happening.

I'm sure I read Reddit-based rumblings that there were no immediate plans for AS6, even before the pandemic
 
And with the pandemic still slaying, they won’t be able to film a new season this summer, no?

That would mean no Drag Race for a year? :o

Various productions have been given the go-ahead to start/resume filming in California very recently. I would imagine Drag Race might be able to be part of that?

I'm not sure what the requirements are with social distancing but surely it'd be fairy doable, even if they had to keep the queens apart? Werkroom stations further spread out, more time between runways, etc. I don't think close contact is vital to the show, but I'm probably underestimating various elements of the production process.

My understanding is that it involves regular testing among three groups, depending on your involvement in the production. Ru and the regular judges and queens could theoretically be in the same one, meaning they wouldn't have to social distance as long as they didn't come into close contact with anyone else. Probably little scope for guest judges though.

Whilst Alyssa did look a bit tame, her lip syncs don't exactly have much range either - then again, I don't think her ego works in a way that makes her care here as she knows she'll still get her soundbites to get her moments anyway :D

Yes. I mean we are currently getting through 10 all stars contestants a year and only 13 new regular contestants... we're literally seeing people that made it to week 3 of their season on the show.

We'll have VIVACIOUS on next.

Most reality TV shows wait about 5 years between 'All Stars' seasons.
 
What seemed to be set for every 4 seasons seemed fine, but even every 2 could help it maintain it's event status, which has somewhat gone now.
