Feels like we skipped from July into October. Torrential rain and 14°C. :)

Mandy and I were saying we actually preferred the town area of Colchester more than Brighton.

Which probably says more about us than it does Brighton :D

But we found everyone to be really friendly, service in shops and restaurants was good, we found some nice little backstreets with restaurants etc.

And no one was drunk and fighting in the street at 3pm.
 
Aberdeen on a Saturday night was quite the experience. No fights, although there was almost one on Sunday when some teenage mums on the bus threatened to kick off at some other girls for apparently staring at them.

That said I do like Colchester. It's not without It's charms. I guess I just know the shit side too. Brighton beats all however. I know the shit side of there too.

Oh yeah we very much avoided the shit parts I think. But in Brighton that felt like all we saw. I did like Shoreham.

I realise I'm in the minority with my dislike of Brighton.

I used to dislike most cities but recently they've very much grown on me and I see the beauty in all of them, London, Bristol, Colchester, etc...I just really struggled with Brighton.
 
The Colchester tourist board would absolutely get a wide on, at being compared to any of those places. I concede the town centre is quite cute in spots. @Rachey did you even see the castle and Castle Park?

We drove past them! And saw the huge cemetery/crematorium. We were going to go to the castle Saturday but I was too hungover.
 
Is it raining and dull every day in England too? It’s been like this for over a month here now. DEPRESSING.

My friends told me last night that alcohol makes my kiwi accent thicker and extra FOB. Apparently I stood up and declared "What a NOIGHT!!". Literally wanna die.
 
Yep instead of sitting outside drinking cocktails I have my hair scraped back and not a jot of make up on. Have just been on a jaunt to the kebab shop for me and juniors tea.

It was nice for most of the day today on the island, I sat outside and had a gin...but it's not nice now and tomorrow looks absolutely awful 🙄

Yes we have had the odd bit of sunshine but nothing PROLONGED. As @Soldi said we had a FABULOUS JUNE but almost nothing since. 😢

I wonder if you have a slightly different perspective of Brighton to a lot of people due to living right by the sea all the time?

I personally find the beach one of the least appealing things of Brighton. I love the views of the sea you get from the city, but the beach itself is boring as hell in my opinion. Just a very long stretch of pebbles. I much prefer smaller, ideally sandy coves.

What I love about Brighton is the vibe of the place, the spirit of it and the people it draws in.

I think this is a huge part of it for me. It's not a great beach so I don't go there to see that like a lot of people would. I actually find it quite an ugly beach.

But also, I didn't get the vibe you're talking about, or the people, I genuinely felt uncomfortable and wary walking around, even in the afternoon. I didn't see happy, easy going, friendly people like I think I expected. I saw angry, intimidating drunks most of the time.

And obviously I'm used to the island where I know it's safe to walk around without fear of a fight or anything, but I've also walked around London, Bristol , York, etc etc and never felt uncomfortable.

Maybe I went on a bad day 🤔

Well quite a few parts of Brighton very much remind me of Stokes Croft - the area of Bristol you didn't like between The Crafty Egg and the main shopping area. But there are other lovely bits as well.

I've worked next to that area for years, so I probably don't feel so intimidated by it as I've normalised it. But I still would be cautious, particularly at night.
 
Or The Isle of Wight. I am not very well travelled in England at all.

Maybe we somehow missed all the good bits of Brighton. But we did the lanes, the north lanes, the sea front and the dome area.

I always enjoy reading you and Lolly’s conversations about different places you have been to and having grown up around 20 minutes from the Seaside it is definitely what I missed most living here but just never got round to it. NEVER SAY NEVER though. Just not in the foreseeable as I am wanting a bit of a break from the UK.
 
I’m going to Brighton for the first time in a few weeks.

RECOMMENDATIONS PLEASE (other than our @Nancy‘s bar which is already on the list)
