I noticed it was in the chart last week. Has it only just been released, then? How odd.

Callum's version is up to 12 on iTunes now. It really takes away a lot of what made the original so great, but I fear that people will think it's more "meaningful" because it's acoustic.

You should post more.

It's DOWN to #12. I saw it at #9 earlier in the week.

I assume BGT hit but it's hit #17 this week and his version is now at #12 on iTunes. Bizarrely it's an old school floating hit.

it refuses to flush, doesn't it?

being cheap on iTunes helps, obviously

I wonder which has 'sold' more at this stage. At least $$$ for Robyn. Kinda.

I imagine he probably has, hasn't he? I don't remember the.original having a particularly lengthy chart run, despite.having a higher peak. At least until now...

They keep playing the shitty real music version of this in the office, and I want to DIE.

It is just as bad as that TERRIBLE James Arthur version of Impossible.

This has been a real slow burner. First performed on Britain's Got Talent in 2015, it's been inching up the charts for months and currently sits at #2 on iTunes.

It's not bad, per se, but something about it becoming a much bigger hit than the original is so, so offensive to me.

I absolutely DETEST this type of affected faux-croaky/nasally vocal delivery that seems to have become evermore popular over the past couple of years. It's just not a natural way of singing (for some it may be, but for the majority it's just PUT ON!).

I also hate slow, ballady covers of uptempo hits, as if slowing it down and taking off all the bass gives it some added authenticity and gravitas.

It's a BIG FAT NO from me.

And if that wasn't bad enough, the arrangement is a complete rip-off of this

It's the epitome of what drives me nuts about 'authenticity pop'. Yes it's all delicate and real music, but he sounds like he's never set foot in a dance club in his LIFE! And if he did, who wouldn't ignore the mopey bastard!

Not to mention that fucking enunciation.

It isn't great, but in the same way Westlife scoring a huge hit with a I Have A Dream, I like seeing a Robyn song doing well.

He hasn't even done the right thing and had it remixed. That I could forgive. I forgave Bastille when they had their Corona/ Snap cover remixed.

Heat radio have been playing the a Tiesto mix which makes it sound TROPICAL HOUSE :daf:

Awful. I'm never usually a fan of these oh-so-earnest acoustic covers to begin with, but in this case it's completely missing the point.

It's interesting (and frustrating) that this is a huge hit on commercial radio. That was always a problem Robyn had as I recall - Radio One were very supportive of her, but she never got much airplay elsewhere.

I don't think you can really judge the success of this song in relation to Robyn's lack of commercial radio appeal - Calum's version is deliberately tailored to the kind of stuff that commercial radio is lapping up at the moment. It's no criticism of the original, but I think the source material/artist is actually fairly interchangeable for this sort of thing.

I would just try and look at it with the view that a few people might think: "I like this", do a bit of digging and discover where it came from - if Robyn only gains one fan from it, then it's one more that she might not have had if this hadn't taken off.

I kind of agree. Also, Robyn pretty much went out of her way NOT to cater to commercial radio audiences tbh. I covered one interview with her for a regional station where she answered a question with "Why are you asking such stupid questions?". I did sort of respect her for it, but she didn't want it enough to play the game.

Well no, it's got great, unique lyrics and a lovely melody. It works well in this form. As proven by IVY LYNN.

The interpretation bugs me, but the success of this version and what it implies pisses me off far more than the fact of its existence.

I think, to be honest, you're reading far too much into it.

Someone has recognised the strength of the original, turned it into a version readily digestible for mainstream radio and used it as a vehicle to launch a reality TV star.

I don't think there's anything more to it than the plethora of similar sounding tracks that have been hits over the last 4-5 years. The only difference here is your attachment to the original artist.

For the record, when he first performed it on BGT (seemingly years ago now) I loved his performance.

This must stand a good chance at #1 now. And there's a Tiesto mix charting as well.

Oh AT LAST a REMIX. I notice it's #3 on iTunes even without the $ off.

Still way down at #22 on Spotify though. Although I believe that's as high as it ever has been.

In Belgium we had to endure Real Musificication of DOMO five years ago already, with this insomniac-friendly piano version by a Flemish Pop Idol runner-up that made #2 in the sales charts early summer 2011.

I'm not de guauwhl yore takin home

Fuck Calum Scott and these dreary "reinterpretations" of good songs (including the whiny balladeering version of "Everybody's Free" in that Boots advert).

I'm listening to the Buzz Junkies remix of "Dancing On My Own" out of protest.
