Can we get a list of who is a TERF and who is a trans ally?

I resisted watching on account of her being dreadful but curiosity got the better of me as she's getting slaughtered everywhere for it and she's deranged. I don't know if she's just joking with the transphobic and homophobic notion about people wanting to know their baby's gender but what a dangerous route to go down.

What?

She said gender reveal parties for expectant parents was homophobic and transphobic af and that her child would decide later in life what it wants to be. I'm on board with the latter obviously but I really don't see how the gender reveal is either homophobic or transphobic. I believe she did the same with her first born but then started referring to her as daughter a few years ago.

It's not directly transphobic, but it's feeds into transphobia in the sense that gender and biology are more important than anything else. I guess she's responding to some kind of bigger series of criticisms towards her from transphobes, some of whom are also homophobic (which is a terrifying growing trend).

She's generalising, but I can guarantee you some gender reveal parties are done, by those wanting to align themselves with a side. For example I bet the Kirks had gender reveal parties.

I watched almost all of that video trying to decide whether she was mocking terfs or being one so I'm not sure it quite landed :D

thankfully she's a good egg

It's not completely about transphobia and more about imposing roles and expectations before the child has even drawn breath, the whole 'pink or blue' thing being a deliberate straitjacket by which the kid is then judged thereafter. There is a piece around the implied notion that what follows from a single look at a baby's genitalia can be celebrated in advance due to being embedded and therefore immutable. This is the kind of shit that leads to t-shirts for 2 year olds that say "Ladies Man" which is every bit ass as homophobic as it is transphobic. It's all grounded in that diabolical right-wing neo-Christian inflexibility that manifests in every aspect of the person's life.

I was slightly mortified when one of my nieces had one for her child. But she's the type who wouldn't miss an opportunity for content. Which essentially is what Paloma is skewering here. To me Paloma's intentions felt clear, but I guess I had knowledge of her opinions already.

They're stupid AND presumptive and SOMETIMES evil.

Much like every new poster we have.

There's definitely people who never miss an opportunity to make it all about them and glom onto these things without thinking.

I don't think gender reveal parties are inherently transphobic, or even homophobic. I think it is more about why people do them, or why people care about gender in the first place. The reason people care about their baby's gender is because of the stereotypes that come with it. Maybe mums want a girl that they can put in pretty dresses and go shopping with when they're older, while dads want a mini-me that they can take to the football. Sometimes people even say you need to know the gender because of how to decorate and what clothes to buy - but then that also gives credence to the idea that baby boys and baby girls need to dress differently and sleep in rooms painted a different colour. So people take umbrage with gender reveal parties because they give legitimacy to gendered stereotypes.

Being gay or trans is always going to be harder if you have parents who really care about these things and wanted a boy or a girl for particular reasons. Trans people are inherently gender non-conforming obviously, and I would say most gays are in some regard too (even if just because not being into the 'opposite' gender goes against gendered expectations/stereotypes). Regarding gender reveals specifically - as a trans person, I imagine knowing that your parents had a big party to reveal your gender might be disconcerting as it demonstrates that they care about it one way or the other.

But honestly it is probably more important what they do after when the kid is there. If you have a gender reveal and then go on to be the sort of parent who says "no, you can't do x because you're a boy" or "no, you can't do y because you're a girl" ... that's the real problem and it probably indicates to that child if they are gay or trans that it is not 'safe' for them to be themselves around their family.

However - I think quite a few people who have gender reveals do it quite innocently for a bit of fun (any excuse for a party!) and aren't aware of what it signifies to other people (including potentially their future child) but potentially should be.

Even as a non-binary person I think Paloma's approach of waiting a few years and letting the kid decide their gender themselves is a bit "that one friend who is too woke". But as a non-binary person i've always been grateful for the approach that my parents took with me, which was that when I did get old enough they never tried to either force anything on me that was gendered if I showed resistance, or say no if I wanted to do something that was gender non-conforming. My mum always tells a story about me being about four and her putting me in a dress and me going upstairs and changing into leggings and basically saying I didn't want to wear dresses - and so from that point on she basically said she wouldn't put me in a dress unless I suggested it (which I didn't). I wore a mix of boys and girls clothes, I loved watching wrestling and going to the football with my dad, but I also played with Barbies and liked pop music and painting my nails. There was no active convo about 'gender neutral parenting' or anything - they just let me be myself. In doing so they also gave me the best possible indication that they would be pretty chill if I came out as gay, trans or whatever.

I think gender reveal parties are obnoxious but to each their own. While the world likes to think everyone has “gone woke” the reality is the majority of people follow traditional gender norms. I don’t think we as a society are anywhere near the idea of let the child be “fluid” until they can make their own decisions.

The one good thing they did was help people learn how to correctly pronounce Alba (clue: it's not the Jessica way).

Chelsea Handler needs to be on the allies list. I won’t share the recent post as it’s her commenting on a recent anti-trans law in Kansas which is actually quite foul and triggering, but this was her message -

Before my Bluetooth connected in the car, I heard this on the radio. Just stated matter of fact. So cold. They are talking about human beings as if they're not. The media really do need to let all voices be heard, all faces be seen. They report this as if it is to be accepted and it maintains the dehumanising representation or effect of no representation whatsoever.

To my surprise, I'm adding 80s androgynous star Marilyn to TERF list

Clearly needs some GBNews work

with "one of the first androgynous individuals who championed no judgment" in the bio :eyes:

When was the last time anyone gave a fuck about Marilyn anyway? 1986, when he was crawling out of Boy George's flat, skagged to the eyeballs, offering to suck someone off for a McDonalds and the cab fare home? GET FUCKED.

They have been at each other for a few months over this. And Marilyn is clearly thriving on the notoriety or perceived relevance his views (if they were ever his views) have now given him.
