an incumbent government in a major economy switching leader and going into a second, third or even fourth term as clear favourites in an election has to be quite a rare occurrence right? it seems like governments swing more these days and being out of government is often key to persuading people to vote for you.

is the turnaround in polling partly a reaction to Trump and the US bullying Canada, like a don't rock the boat situation? or more about Trudeau being replaced? how has Canada so far resisted a swing to the right?

That's quite wild. You'd expect the party leader, especially an established one like Polilievre, to only be at risk if the party got absolutely decimated. But as much as they've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, they haven't done *that* badly overall - currently on 144 seats to the Liberals 168. Hardly a British Tories in 2024 style wipeout, and even there Rishi comfortably held his own constituency.

I was talking about this with my dad on Saturday; as some of you know, he lives in Canada and has done with 2001. He was saying that Poilievre's personal popularity wasn't so good - it wasn't like a Trump situation or even a Johnson over here where the individual was pulling the voters. It was more like a Sunak or a May where people were voting despite him. As such, he said he wouldn't be surprised if Poilievre lost his seat.
