Chemistry (20th Anniversary Deluxe) & Singapore (Definitive Version)

I do love how Singapore is having a belated moment, with not just one but two new versions.

That’s a good tracklist to be fair.

What is the difference between the normal Whole Lotta History and the video version? I know the girls all mime the chorus, but I feel it’s still mainly Nadine…but perhaps they get turned up slightly?

I think so, but emphasis on the slightly.

I did find it weird they didn’t all just sing it to begin with. Sure, have her clearly at the front, but it would sound slightly ‘fuller’ if they’d at least given the chorus backing vocals (for a group!).

The original Singapore is one of my favourite Girls Aloud songs. This version is NOT the definitive version at all - it loses all the storytelling element of the original AND the amazing ‘Dreams mean…’ second verse. RIOTING!

I adore Singapore. I still enjoy the entirely unfounded idea that as "Memory Of You" was originally called "Japan", it could be a sequel.

WHOLE ALBUM OF SONGS ABOUT ASIAN COUNTRIES PLEASE.

Zero fucks given about the Christmas album then. I guess that kinda makes sense...

I still do think they're missing a MASSIVE trick with the vinyl, though as I'd leap at a box set for every single one of these albums. Maybe holding that back for another round later on.

I miss some of the original lyrics but I do love the new Sarah part... I can't imagine the memories when you're blinking

Maybe they've got some more hot vault selections from Tangled Up. Out of Control is surely going to be slim pickings unless they combine with Ten though.

Shove on that Richard X collab with Sarah for the OoC re-issue and I'll forgive them anything. No idea when it was recorded, but it fits the album's aesthetic.

Crossing everything for a standalone festive release for Christmas '25

That camp as tits artwork deserves to be a vinyl cover :disco:

A separate reissue of the Christmas album feels inevitable, whether it is this year or next.

And Beautiful Cos You Love Me.

Actually scrap that, everyone hates that one. Apart from Chimola.

Racy Lacey is still an absolute stone cold turd but other than that (and See The Day), it's still good, innit?

WOO WOO

Yep they should have binned off See The Day and moved up Whole Lotta History for Xmas.

I'm glad they included the original mix of Singapore as well as this new 'Definitive' version.

I splashed out on the 3CD. Cheryl's liner notes being about 1,500 words of incomprehensible txt tlk. :D

I have no actual idea, but I would assume there was some big damage control being done in late 2005 after Long Hot Summer essentially flopped after such a successful second album campaign, and this may have resulted in See The Day being hastily recorded and chucked out as the Xmas single.

From memory there was only about 6 weeks between Biology and it, which was very rare/unheard of in the physical era. Possibly they were originally assuming the two pre-album singles were going to be bigger than they were and once Long Hot Summer underperformed they lost their nerve and threw out a karaoke cover to try and ensure the album at least sold OK over Christmas. Given all the stories of the label having minimal faith until the second album took off it would seem plausible.

Nah, See The Day was the old trick of repeating your last big success- I’ll Stand By You had been the biggest hit from the previous campaign and another wintertime ballad cover would have been seen as the path to follow. It was the same as how Steps used to try to recreate the Heartbeat/Tragedy Christmas new song/ cover model.

See The Day was properly chucked out during Christmas week itself, right? It was just to capitalise on the big sales that week, I’d imagine. Biology actually did really well for the time- it hung around for a while and only began to properly drop once See The Day came out.

Chemistry was the problem. It peaked at #11 which was seen as a disaster, despite the sales not being too bad. They were definitely on their way out after the Greatest Hits, but Something Kinda Ooh took everyone by surprise and turned things around.

It all just seemed WEIRD to go from having quite the ‘quirky’ theme, artwork, songs etc and then throw it all away mid-Biology and chuck out the album with such an AC cover - both album artwork (especially in the light of the fabulous Xmas version artwork) and song. Obviously to try and get the Christmas sales, though I doubt anyone bought the album for See The Day anyway.

Crazy to think they were borderline being probably dropped when the album opened with 84,000, #11 or not!

I hate that they still haven’t taken the opportunity to stick See The Day on the end of the tracklist where it clearly belongs. It’s such a vibe-killing sore thumb jammed between Wild Horses and Watch Me Go.

I’ve never fathomed why Long Hot Summer bombed, except maybe it was a bit too similar to the previous album in style, but it’s a stone cold 10/10 for me, but then most of their singles were…

I KNOW YOU LIKE to wear my dressing gown when I’m not THERE
I GUESS you like it IN MY SHOES
I KNOW YOU drive a MASERATI and the ladies stare
DON’T MEAN YOU’LL GO AS FAST AS I DO

:disco:

But then crazychris would have had to return the cd.
