It occurred to me this morning that Hancock might have been referring to the BLM protests in Manchester with his comments ’these areas have shown they can't social distance’
 
There is plenty of rightful outrage over them effectively cancelling Christmas with zero notice.

Imagine the uproar if this was done in the same way on December 24th.

My sister was supposed to be coming up to mum's this weekend from Dorset. Last time we saw her was January. Since we last saw her my dad went into hospital, then a care home, was sectioned, died, had a funeral and is now a box of ashes in a cabinet and she still stuck to the rules and didn't come up to see my mum. I'm just about to ring mum and tell her to tell my sister to come anyway. I'll swear under oath that she travelled up yesterday if necessary.

Bolton and Bury are FINE. It’s Rochdale and Trafford where the rates have gone up a fair bit why drag us ALL into this. Your sister needed to test her eyes right ?

It is undoubtedly related to this. Our @Beverley has drawn to my attention on Twitter the extent to which imagery of Muslims is being used to report these local lockdowns. If I was going to go even more cynical, there is a possibility the Government (and wider establishment) are looking to plant the idea that Muslims are responsible for a second spike.

It's really sickening! I hadn't even noticed the imagery accompanying what I've read this morning till you pointed it out. I pride myself on taking people as I find them but it would appear I'm also so blinded by my white privelege that I didn't even notice until it was pointed out.

My sister isn't coming. Because of where she works she'd get sacked immediately if her bosses heard about the trip. Fair enough I suppose but my mum's heartbroken again.

Also Floppet my condolences but every time you mention Chinese food I get the biggest craving and have to go out and get one!

I don't think that can be right, at least based on positive tests. Before yesterday, the tracker that I have been obsessively following hadn't had the whole of the UK above 800 cases in any day for more than a month. Could they have meant weekly cases rather than daily?

Not confirmed through a test. Contracting the virus daily. It was on BBC News around 10 minutes ago.

Ugh. I guess we can expect big increases in the testing positive numbers over the next few weeks then.
 
I'm mildly pleasantly surprised that they've actually acted on their promise to "put the brakes on" if cases start to go up again. Hopefully they continue to climb at the current pace before grinding to a halt again in a few weeks rather than rocketing up.

Chris Whitty spoke in fairly unambiguous terms in the press conference that we have basically reached the limit of what we can open up so it was nice to see the public not completely getting the blame.
 
If I could JUST get my holiday in next weekend and my trip back to Belfast for my birthday before everything goes to COMPLETE shit again that would be fantastic, thanks.

Don't get me wrong I'm not blaming Boris for the virus, but I wish he could find a happy medium between the very scary "pfff piffle paffle we might do something in a couple of weeks but just use common sense" and the also very scary "nopenopenope reverse reverse! Immediately! Everybody paniccccccc!"

Especially if this renewed mental health fuckery is down to islamophobia.

Now after all these months we're back in MARCH and I'm off back to work again and the whole shitshow of causing absolute terror because I'm going to work and coming home to parents, starts all over again, only this time they won't let us WFH. "But just get another job or get somewhere to live by yourself" I hear you cry.... yeah, in the middle of all this economic devastation...

Just hearing from my friend in Melbourne about the state of disaster declared in Victoria.

Facemasks are mandatory at all times outside the home, curfew in place between 8pm-5am, can't go further than 5km from your residence, likely to be in place for a minimum of six weeks!

Just a few weeks ago we were on zoom talking about how Aus had controlled it well and deaths were basically zero and cases we're a handful each week.

It makes you wonder if there is a right or wrong way I handle the virus because you can only lockdown for so long and if it appears to be taking ahold as soon as restrictions are eased, what is the solution? Permanent lockdown?
 
I think the "solution" will have to be the way it seems to be heading here- periods of lockdown and non-lockdown until a vaccine is secured.

This is what would absolutely kill me. Working all day and then basically being told I can’t go out even for a solo walk or cycle.

I went out yesterday and had food and some cocktails with three friends. Food was outdoors, but then our cocktails were inside. I don’t feel too trepidatious - we were well spaced out from other patrons so if any of my group get the rona then it will be from each other (and me and my pals are have been generally pretty responsible).

Given the inevitability of another lockdown, local or national, i’m glad to get in some social contact before that isn’t possible anymore. :(

We are literally at the stage we were at in late February before it blew up in March. I am very much in the mindset that things are going to be terrible again by the end of this month and if I am wrong then HALLELUJAH. I do not usually go with the glass half empty approach, but I don’t think I could BARE thinking positively then getting thrown in at the deep end again.
 
Their next steps are really going to make it clear where they stand on the "public health vs economy" debate - if they try to impose restrictions on movement without pulling back on businesses reopening and this stupid "eat out to help out" scheme it'll confirm what we all suspect about their real motivations.
 
Boris is apparently working on a plan to avoid another lockdown.

Do you think the strategy will change to eliminate? It's working for NI and Scotland, but even they can only have so much success without England adopting the same approach.

So many areas are essentially Covid-free, having a tougher lockdown to protect those areas and deliver proper tracking and tracing to badly affected areas to get better control could be the answer
 
I went out with four friends last night, each from different households, and every single one of them was AMAZED what we were doing was actually still not allowed.

WHICH JUST ABOUT SAYS IT ALL ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE OF OUR GOVERNMENT.
