The Tories want deaths. "Herd Immunity" works when people are vaccinated and there isn't a vaccine. This is pure spin. They want deaths. They want a reduction in the "economically inactive". That's why Johnson looks so ashen because he knows how bad it could be compared to other countries and it's on him.
I don't believe this is motivated by political ideology. I think it's a massively risky roll of the dice by a group of people who have always had things work out for them in their lives, so assume it'll happen here as well.

The spread of the virus will be slowed slightly by forthcoming measures so that the healthcare system isn't overloaded (HA HA HA HA HA) but not so much that it interferes with our RIGHTEOUS DECOUPLING FROM THE EU which is of course the MOST IMPORTANT THING and for which ANY NUMBER OF US are WILLING TO DIE

Trump and VP Pence have been tested as of yesterday. The results are expected in a "couple days" - didn't know it took that long.

I'm off to a government licking party as we speak. Population control for everyone!!

what's your worry?

Everything just seems so uncertain. I think it's because of the kids I worry, what if I can't get their milk or nappies? Apparently people are panic buying those now aswell. If nursery closes I won't be able to go back to work, will we still pay fees? How can we afford that if I'm not working??

Have you tried Amazon?

At the moment I've got a small stock of nappies. But now I feel like going out on Monday and buying some more! I feel like I'm falling for this panic buying.
Well if they keep selling out, it's natural to be sucked into it by necessity.

Oh GREAT.

One of the people in our office who has been coughing like a 60-a-day pensioner and said it was "one of these things I get now and again" has been told " erm, NO, please self-isolate".

I told you - stupidity will do more for this thing than anything else.

My boss said yesterday that this whole self isolation "if you have a cough" was, in his eyes, just an excuse for people to not bother turning up for work.

While I completely get that that will be the case for a substantial number of people, when you're a person who almost never goes sick, it's extremely hard to follow advice for fear of being branded a lazy, opportunistic SLUG. For years I've dragged myself in with utterly horrendous flu-like symptoms just because if I didn't, no one else would do it, and there must be loads of jobs like that.

So it's really hard to take the decision to self isolate (not that I am, I'm fine, for now) when you're so used to that mentality and wondering if people will think you're pulling a fast one - especially if your own boss clearly thinks that! It makes you want to do the opposite.

Not saying your example is like that, but there's so many reasons why people might persist with work. I like to think I'd do the right thing and stay at home if I had symptoms, but in my job it's always felt like if you go sick, there's no one else to do it and so the responsibility sits at your door. You pick up the pieces after. And I feel like, even now, it's no different. The pressure is to continue.

It's not right but I understand why people plough on.

This is the thing. As an adult I'll eat any old rubbish, even a can of beans is fine for dinner. But I need decent food for the baby. I'm sure I'm over thinking and we won't run out of food, but who knows?

I saw an internal email to Tesco staff the other day which said not to worry, they wouldn't run out of food. But then I go into shops and the shelves are empty! My youth group is camping this weekend, they needed cereal so I said I'd pick some up on my way in this morning and I couldn't get a single box of anything for them.

...and that's capitalism. You MUST plough on regardless otherwise the higher-ups don't make money out of you. They need that type of anxiety to keep you grafting, no matter how you feel. A lot of places have punitive sickness/absence policies and it's easier and less stressful to drag yourself in rather than put up with a 3-week disciplinary process because a week's self-isolation has taken you over an acceptable percentage for sick leave.

This is what is happening here too, people panicking and emptying shelves. But since supermarkets are going to be stocking every day, I want to think after a few days things will calm down. I mean, I would understand it if no more food is arriving to the supermarkets, but this is not the case, so hysterical people buying lots of toilet rolls and pasta aren't going to keep buying on and on, they have enough for months. At least that's what I want to believe.

"French cases doubled over the last 72 hours to about 4,500. There have been 91 deaths, and 300 coronavirus patients are in critical condition — half of them under 50 years of age."

Ermmm that's quite shocking. Jesus.

Fuck that shit, everyone. If you're lucky enough to get full pay when you're off sick, or if you get less but can make it work, GO FUCKING SICK. Pretty much ALL of us are utterly expendable to our employers, no matter how much they try to kid us (or we kid ourselves) otherwise.

The supermarket thing is worrying. I’ve just been to two large superstores and they had next to nothing - no fruit, vegetables, frozen stuff, tins or dry foods, cleaning products. Everything was pretty much sold out. I’ve never seen anything thing this.

I don’t actually blame people for panic buying. People are scared shitless and all our govt can say is wash your hands.

Hear hear.

“Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.
But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighbourhood
So that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.
So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.”

One of my friends posted it on facebook. She's a yoga teacher. I'd never have guessed she'd be the one to post it.

I'd say until yesterday this was about 12th on my list of concerns. Yesterday seemed to be the moment it encroached in my life in multiple tedious, stressful and concerning ways.

Yes, that was the day it suddenly hit home for me as well. I think until that point on some level thought the government had our best interest at heart :DAF:

If I didn't work in an office with a generous scattering of fuckwits, it wouldn't be number one. Such as it is...

I'm isolated and should be ok, but I have my parents right now stranded in an airport, waiting to take their plane back home, and it has already a 5 hours delay and counting. All this surprised them while travelling, and even when both are old enough to be at high risk, my father is a VERY high risk profile for several health problems. I try to be calmed and think everything will be ok but I've been so stressed this week that I started crying right now when everyone started clapping and cheering from their home (I saw something on twitter but I didn't want to read much about this shit). And I can't even remember the last time I cried. :(

Plus today is the first day I haven't been out at all. I'm not purposely social distancing today. I just had nothing that I NEEDED to do, so thought I wouldn't. But I feel like I don't know what to do for the best. And what to do tomorrow, when I'd normally see my mum. Do I go at all? Do I get the bus? And what about work on Monday? Etc etc...

I really think not working at the moment has given me quite the outside perspective. While that's been nice, it also means I have been quite unprepared for all the influx of stress.
