The pub thing is very interesting, but people's health has to come before business, as awful as that is- believe me, I don't want pubs to close...

I've got a friend who runs a restaurant which really doesn't "fit" the Deliveroo model, but is launching it now ready and branching out into stuff that might sell on there in an attempt to keep things going. It's going to be really tough for the industry.
 
Every other European country bar us is pretty much in lockdown now. But the UK are right and they're all wrong, right? I saw a news bulletin where people were going to the pub as usual and were saying, that 'It's not going to stop me going to the pub, it's only a flu virus'. Also the Stereophonics are continuing with their tour and did a stadium gig in Cardiff last night. They got, quite rightly, totally roasted on social media for it. I have a gig on Sunday which I'm not going to now. It was only £20 or so, but I'm not prepared to risk it, as I'm in a higher-risk category. Anyone who gets a flu jab for free is in this category.

The US and UK are taking a completely different stance to the rest of the world and it strikes me that it's also probably quite likely to do with their superiority complex.
 
Sorry to say this but your Government looks like a bunch of incompetent idiots. Time will tell.
 
I'd better get my wig trimmed this afternoon. I'm going to look a right state on the other side if I don't get it done before lockdown.
 
Does anyone else remember this or have I made it up - when we (in the UK) all got sent free forehead thermometers? Was it during swine flu? I've just found mine in a drawer.

you have to take account political leadership in these two countries, and its priorities, as well. i haven't seen anyone say it yet but i'm sure a bit of time in isolation will give rise to the topic of "natural selection".
 
Talking of HAIRDOS, I really want to try a wanker hipster moustache, but I have had a beard for about 12 years now. I'm worried I'll have a double chin underneath so I'm going to try it whilst we're on LOCKDOWN.
 
It seems that my office is going to shut down. They’re all in a meeting to discuss. I’m just a bit panicked since I’m the newest person and probably the first to be fired.

DON'T. Whenever I trim my beard too closely I'm disgusted by how BIG my face is.

But also, beards are totally a hotbed for disease, so consider trimming it off whilst in isolation. I'm not going to the barber's until this plague is OVAH!

If I'm in isolation, though, I won't be GETTING any disease...that's the POINT!

Thing is, I'm NOTHING without my beard usually. Hence why I am scared about removing it.

For now, I'm only in semi isolation - I need to be able to go out for essentials - hence my beard is going!

that's an uncomfortable feeling. I hope it works out for you. is your work very dependent on people showing up and can it be done from home?
 
Back at work and walking around Westfield this lunch time I’d say about 20% of the stores have closed, either through a nationwide decision or just by lack of staff.

We only had a few people off today and it’s only the parents of young school aged children having a few questions over policies in place if they need to go off in case of school closures.

Journey into work was amazing though. Maybe less than 10 people in the tube carriage at 8:30am. Ultimately on top of the big companies recommending working from home, anyone with the sniffles is off, so they’re not there to spread the usual lurgies around, so the rest of us are generally feeling better than ever.

I've been deliberately staying away from this thread, and I am not endorsing Boris et al in any shape or form but -
1. The UK is a few weeks behind those countries currently on lockdown. Our lockdown may still come in due course.
2. Early lockdown risks public fatigue, civil unrest and, yes, more damage to the economy. A phased approach is better.
3. Social media has a lot to answer for in drumming up hysteria.
4. Stereophonics are wankers and should have cancelled their gig.
 
I really do not understand why ALL companies are not bringing in a WFH policy unless you cannot work from home.

I'm back at work on 1 April, and I'll be refusing to go into the office at that point. Things will be a LOT worse by then though.
 
Think I'm going to stay out of this thread a bit too actually. I went baby class this morning and there was only one other person there.

Not everyone has the infrastructure. My company can currently sustain about 20% of the workforce working from home, and they're keeping it open for emergencies.

So in the office I go.

Ultimately - lives are more important than livelihoods. I absolutely feel for them but I won't be heading out to anything any time soon.

They'll have to remedy that at some point! Or everyone will end up working one day a week!
 
We've decided to have a trip to London next week.

a) it will be less busy
b) it might be our last chance in ages
c) fuck it we're bored

They've been trying to since "The Beast from the East", according to one IT chap. So it ain't happening.

If we all get sent home then there's a priority list and everyone else will get paid for watching reruns of Minder.
 
I'm a wreck over this at the moment tbh. I'm in Ireland and schools, universities and crèches have been closed since last week. Pubs, many restaurants and cafés followed over the weekend. Today most barbers closed as well, my OH wanted to get his hair cut but it looks like we'll have to do with the hair clipper that I just ordered from Amazon. I guess other shops will follow soon.

Last night some friends forwarded this stupid fake WhatsApp message about an army lockdown today and limited access to supermarkets and water supply. I know it was pure scaremongering but it sent my anxiety through the roof.
I can work from home (not that I can concentrate on anything but never mind) but my partner works in a customer facing role. They're not closing for now. If he gets it I'll get it. His mother can't visit her husband in a nursing home as visitors are not allowed. I worry about her and my parents back in Germany, they are nearly 80 and should something happen I probably won't even be able to fly back home the way things are going. They live in a house with my siblings and avoid each other at the moment (they all have their own flats) because my brother and sister are worried they might pass it on to them if they catch it. My small niece talks to my parents through closed windows and doesn't understand why she can't go in and play with her gran :(
