i'll just put this here and log off before the rest of my hair falls out.

White House likely to push federal aid for shale companies hit by coronavirus/international energy shock. Trump confidante & oil billionaire Harold Hamm lost $2 billion yesterday. Hamm reached out to admin but says he didn't make “direct" contact.

Certainly possible.

Not saying it's wrong (don't know well enough to know better) but I'm always sceptical of "scary looking graphs":

Also an interesting comment in that Twitter thread: "I was wondering if you have a reason for mixing log and lin scales? I usually tell my students not to do that unless they have a very good justification. (not being alarmist is a good reason :-)"

However whilst I think the hype is wayyyyy overblown that's #JustMyArmchairOpinion - not to get all blasé and complacent with it, it is genuinely worrying for vulnerable people as "underlying health issues" considerably increases the mortality rate, plus they don't want to be hospitalised even if they do have a good chance of survival based on the virus, as all sorts of other things go round hospitals and it's generally an unpleasant place to spend time.

IMHO reflecting on it.... Things that I think are helpful (even when it's just colds and flus going around which can also push the vulnerable over an edge):
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Don't just cough and sneeze into the air
  • Don't assume your "bah who cares if I get it, it'll not kill me" also applies to your elderly relatives, people in hospitals with other conditions etc, i.e. have more concern for it around vulnerable people
  • Don't drag yourself into work with the lurgy (obviously not the easiest one if your work doesn't do sick pay)
  • Don't drag your kids into school with the lurgy
  • Avoid massive crowds in high risk areas where possible
  • If you're ill just try and stay indoors. Don't pointlessly have your daily pilgrimage to the pub etc
  • Generally just be mindful and not completely reckless

Things that are NOT helpful:
  • Panicking
  • Writing scare mongering clickbait for tabloids
  • Interpreting and extrapolating emerging case statistics, death rates etc unless you're a qualified epidemiologist (this applies to both the "we're all gonna die" and "it's nothing so fuck it" ends of the spectrum) - especially if writing for the media. E.g. if you don't know the difference between confirmed case death rate and infection death rate, don't try to claim one implies the other.
  • Hoarding all the bog roll and hand sanitiser
  • Crowding out the supermarkets and therefore also spreading stuff around
  • Physically going to the doctor with Coronavirus symptoms
  • Stealing hand sanitiser from hospitals
  • Knowingly travelling the world with a potentially hazardous virus
  • Bickering on the internet (doesn't really apply here, more other forums)

I think all of the above really boils down to "there's no need to put your life on hold or to panic about it, nor should we pretend it's nothing - keep calm and use sensible precautions"

Might just really be pretending to be vaguely smart (not a difficult pretence nowadays especially since 2016), but I find "do what you can but chill out" to be a decent rule of thumb in life

Boomers voting for policies leaving young people in a precarious financial position: haha fuck yeah!! Yes!!

Boomers when they get coughed on by a guy on a zero hour contract while they panic buy a 36 pack of andrex quilted: well this fucking sucks! What the fuck?

I hope she doesn't use self isolation as an opportunity to write more shit books.

It's likely she was in No 10 while carrying the virus. I hope she coughed all over BoJo and Priti.

The Guardian reporting that she fell ill while signing a statutory instrument that made coronavirus a notifiable disease. Oh the IRONY.

Wow she really has been around all of our top top people in the highest places... this could be very interesting!

The entire government should self-isolate. Just to be safe, they should do it for the next five years. And they shouldn't be allowed to have phones.

I can't stop chart watching.

12th earlier in the day. Now overtaken Netherlands... but Norway has sprung from nowhere to leapfrog us to 11th.

Not peer reviewed so keep that in mind but evidence now suggests it can spread through breathing as well.

"Michael Osterholm, PhD, MPH, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota: 'The findings [of the study] confirm that COVID-19 is spread simply through breathing, even without coughing. Don't forget about hand washing, but at the same time we've got to get people to understand that if you don't want to get infected, you can't be in crowds. Social distancing is the most effective tool we have right now.'" Source.

Day 2 of being excluded from work today! I feel for anyone who has contracted the virus but on a shallow level I’m rather pleased to have these unexpected paid days off.

Worth noting that Nadine Dorries has tweeted that her 84 yr old mother is now showing symptoms after Nads decided to stay with her over the last few days. What a thick cunt.

To be fair do we know if she had symptoms at that stage?

I didn't realise 'we' are still only testing people who have been abroad to the worst-affected areas or have been contact-traced

The numbers must be so wrong by now

Some people being flown back from a cruise where 45% of people tested have it reckon they've not been tested by the UK and just told to go home and self isolate. What happened to bunging them all in quarantine like we were doing? It seems we've flipped from uber cautious to not giving a fuck.

what's scary about it? doesn't it literally just show the number of cases? there's no prognosis and if anything it shows that there is a country that is dealing with it quite adequately.

Makes no sense as my work has been closed down due to someone having it who wasn’t abroad but caught it from someone else with it from here.

To be fair, I don't like using 'to be fair' as far as Nadine Dorries is concerned.

I'd normally agree but I was erring on the side of sympathy for someone who may have inadvertently just placed their mother massively at risk.

Kay Burley is such a nob cheese.

She's total gutter press. Never forget

She also puts on this whispery, fake-concerned voice when she talks about people being infected with coronavirus like she's telling a 5 year old their pet bunny has died.

what are the japanese doing to contain it, do we know? (apart from possibly being one of the most conscientious and rule-abiding nations)

Well I don’t have a problem with a logarithmic scale on the graph, it’s not like it’s hidden, and it’s to compare to a particular trend (a 33% daily increase).

I do find it odd that Japan is the only one though, but where are other Asian countries? South Korea? Looks just cherry picked to make a tweetable graph.

japan panicked too, closed the schools 2 weeks early - spring holiday is the big one; not summer like in the UK. I guess they’re more prepared after SARS and MERS, and many people wear the masks as a matter of course.

but there was still panic, masks are nigh impossible to buy, toilet rolls too, but no riots to my knowledge.

They're BORROWING a FUCKING TONNE of money to pay for all sorts of things after ENDLESSLY ATTACKING Labour for proposing just that

BREATHTAKING HYPOCRISY as PER
