The saddest thing about the 99 year old walking back and forth with a zimmerframe to give the NHS £14m, and I'm by no means saying it's small money (it's seriously awesome and so is he!) but he'd have to do the whole thing 25 times every week to match Boris's broken promises of funding upon leaving the EU.

I saw a picture that had him flanked by what looked like a guard of honour (but may have just been a few spare squaddies). That put me over the edge and I'm not completely sure why.

I didn’t actually hope he would die (or then again... :side-eye:) but now I’m really rather disappointed that he DIDN’T

Well he can count himself lucky that the new immigration system isn’t in place otherwise those poor nurses that saved his life wouldn’t have been there because they’re apparently LOW SKILLED :shock:

Which is good, it's just... ugh. I dread to think how few pubs will survive this. Or restaurants, or cafes, or non-essential shops or pretty much anything that isn't adequately protected by the half arsed handouts...

Who in their right mind goes to Pret for food apart from TOURISTS and OFFICE WORKERS, the two demographics who are currently AT HOME looking after little Hugo? Do they even have Prets in non-office, non-touristy areas?

I think the saddest thing about this is our publicly funded health service being re-characterised as something that requires charitable support. The NHS is very explicitly not a charity, and the money required to keep it running demonstrates that nit even a fraction of it should rely on charitable donations.

While I think it is rather nice that yer man and many others have been fundraising for the NHS, the money that people can raise is never going to amount to what is needed. I think a huge problem with this is the public not really having a full understanding of public spending and how much things cost. £12 million sounds like a hefty amount until you realise how much NHS it actually buys you.

Off the back of reading about this this morning, I did a bit of number crunching. According to the Guardian, the income of the top ONE THOUSAND charities in the UK is just under £20bn, some of which will include public money.

The health and social care budget for England alone in 2019 was seven times that, at £140bn. So even without taking Scotland, Wales and NI into account, the system costs seven times that amount to run - almost £400m per day. The amount he has raised is seriously impressive in terms of charity fundraising, but it pays for around an hour of provision.

I've seen many people saying that the existence of any charity is the sign of a Government failure. While I definitely agree with that in some capacity (figures suggest that in Western nations - high levels of charitable giving correlates with a pared-back or less comprehensive welfare state), it does slightly simplify what charities do and how they are funded. Many local charities are commissioned to deliver some of their services, but also receive income from donations to do some of their other work. You could easily argue that some of the work that charities do that relies on private donations, whether that represent all or some of their income, is stuff that should be funded by Government. I would argue that some of it is definitely more "nice-to-do" stuff that Government are very unlikely to / doesn't have a duty to fund.

With regards to the NHS, I just think it is incredibly dangerous as a public to fall into the mindset of the NHS as charity. It is not and can never be reliably funded in this way. I've heard people respond to this argument by saying that the money is only paying for certain things, involving staff and patient welfare. I would argue that that is something, whilst described very vaguely, that sounds like what should be a core part of our publicly funded health service. This is especially if it means the supply of Personal Protective Equipment, which is literally a legal requirement of the Government as an employer to provide to staff.

I should emphasise that I am absolutely not getting at people for doing their bit and raising money. I just think it a farce that the staff of our publicly funded Health Service are potentially relying on such support. And arguably, if the Government were funding the their public service properly, people's donations could support other work going on in communities isn't in the position to receive funding from the public purse.

Charity is how capitalism deals with that PESKY LITTLE THING called a CONSCIENCE. "Here, help yourself to some SCRAPS of the CARCASS after I've PILLAGED the corpse all for MYSELF..."
 
This also explains why Jacob Rees-Mogg finds food banks "heartening" - if we step in to ensure people don't starve, they don't have to. In fact, they will actively seek to pull back even further to see exactly how much the nearly poor can be persuaded to give to the poor before that becomes untenable. Rees-Mogg and his hedge fund cronies will be thrilled by this and will be wondering how else to get the public to plug the gaps that they've left by hoarding billions in offshore accounts.

Yeah I do agree with all that you just posted, and my point that you'd need 25 of this guy going back and forth in his garden every week (and the same vigorous outpouring of public support for those 25x 99 year old veterans every time for the fundraising to actually work) to even match the paltry amount promised on the side of the Lie Bus, was intended to illustrate that it's not a solution :)

That said, good on him for doing something. I think it's a nice middle finger to those who sneer at the clapping - guys, you wanted someone to do something more than "virtue signal" on their doorsteps well here you go, someone did more. But yeah this should never been seen as the answer to the problem. Alas, the true answer to the problem is unlikely to be opportune to us until late 2024, so for now, we'll have to take all the 99 year old veterans and rounds of applause we can get for the NHS...

Framing things that should be a human right as a charitable gift is very classic conservative thinking as Innuendo Studios neatly describes at about 19:45 in this excellent video

Whilst I applaud the gentleman's efforts, I'd never try to reframe the NHS as a charity and yeah we should all be super careful not to do that.

I've no doubt there are people in this country saying exactly that, but I still don't like the thought that people could be so cunty about something that's bringing us all together.

I'm getting all sorts of grief in another forum though for voicing my exasperation at them all sneering about the clapping. I just recently asked what else they suggest people do and how anyone spending 60 seconds putting their hands together on a doorstep in any way detracts from their ability to do what is suggested of them to the point that millions of people get branded 'cunts' there for doing so, but was simply told to "go someplace else" as there are "plenty of other places out there for sycophants"

I mean, I would (only post on CaB out of boredom anyway) but then they win so nah

a friend dropped by to see me yesterday, he just became a father again (12 years after his first child with another woman). made me call the first guy i was in love with (a classmate from my hometown) who's also getting ready for fatherhood but for the first time. how weird it must be to have a child now of all times.
