So Novak Djokovic decided he knew best and arranged a travelling tennis tour exhibition event in Eastern Europe with no social distancing restrictions and what do you know two players, Grigor Dimitrov and Borna Coric (two of the hottest players on tour but that’s beside the point) have tested positive as well as Djokovic’s trainer. Novak has fled back to Serbia without a word so far. So selfish and irresponsible of these players.

It’s hard to know. I’m due to be in Portugal the first week of August. That’s probably looking borderline ok but I’m not sure if I should take the hit and not go. I’m personally probably prepared to travel but don’t want to cause any health risks and also don’t want glares from the locals when there. Still a bit of time to see how things are I guess.

Because of the way this has been handled by the government. I think we're ALL beyond SHAMING people considering nearly EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US has broken lockdown in some way now.
 
The government message seems to be "everything is basically back to normal, apart from pubs, restaurants and nightclubs aren't open and a lot of people are still working from home..."

It barely even feels like lockdown EXISTS for most people any more.

I am however happy as ever for ANY EXCUSE to stay home and away from other human beings :disco:
 
Lockdown DOESN'T exist for most people- and myself included in that to be honest and I stuck to it RELIGIOUSLY until around the time of Cummings (not that that was the reason my mindset changed). As I sit here typing, I can see loads of huge groups sat on the common and the beach and no one is remotely observing social distancing anymore either.

'Lockdown' and everything to do with it (including social distancing) has all but gone out the window and the government knows it, so they want people back in the shops to SPEND SPEND SPEND before they can open up pubs and restaurants again for more expenditure. And let's face it, he will most likely reduce the 2m to 1m tomorrow.

It's always been economy before health with this government and they used the whole 'PROTECT THE NHS' strategy to get the public behind them. The Cummings fiasco was just the cherry on top.

The second wave will happen and it may be even worse than the first wave. China & South Korea are shitting themselves over small numbers of new cases (17 a week or something), meanwhile we have over 1000 new infections a week and we're opening up.
 
This travel quarantine thing is winding me RIGHT UP. Not only was the timing and supposed reasoning utterly nonsensical in the first place, but you just know these travel corridors to be announced soon, which will be established “based on the epidemiology” will be to bloody Spain, France and Portugal and not to countries with few to no cases.

Also I know that nobody is following the rules any more but the rules still are not to stay overnight anywhere other than home... DOESN’T THAT INCLUDE HOLIDAYS? Why don’t they have the balls to say that?

Only 15 deaths announced today for the whole of the UK. I know it is weekend figures but still comparatively it is GREAT news.
 
The weekend figures are a complete nonsense. It's good news IF the daily recorded deaths between tomorrow-Saturday stay below 100.

No country with few to no cases would open any sort of travelling corridor with Britain who is currently THE SICK MAN OF EUROPE.

If anything, it's highly irresponsible of Spain and Portugal to open THEIR borders to the UK all things considered!

Oh yes sorry I didn’t quite put that as I should have done... what I mean is why would we have no qualms whatsoever about letting people from Spain in without condition, while a Hungarian (for example) would have to quarantine.
 
Yeah that's nonsensical but technically people coming over from Spain still have to quarantine, the Spanish government has asked for reciprocity but so far they've heard ZILCH.

I don't really blame people wanting to go on holiday, it's been a horrific year for everyone, and the amount of emails i've been bombarded from easy jet make it sounds like everything is go go go.

But this whole let's save the economy over people's lives is an absolute disgrace. Clearly the more travel we do, the more likely that the virus will spread like wild fire. And quite frankly if it does, it will be because governments allowed such movement again, far too quickly.

I'm also not sure how much more patience people will have if the second wave is indeed worse. I can't imagine those who didn't bend the rules being quite so forgiving second time around.
 
Although this doesn't necessarily apply to international travel, the economy is still people's lives, and I do mean life or death.

Austerity from the 2008 crash was estimated by some sources to kill over 100,000 people through poverty and if we don't get things kicked off, this time will be much worse. Its much easier to point at the thing directly killing people than the silent killer that comes afterwards.

This wouldn't apply as much if we had a decent government capable of looking after the poorest. But we don't.

There is no easy answer to this at all. But I don't subscribe to lockdown forevermore until it's 100% safe. People's lives are at stake either way.
 
Re: Germany I'm clinging onto the hope of that "it's because there aren't many cases so an outbreak looks big and skews the numbers bigtime" thing. But that and the thing in Beijing aren't exactly inspiring confidence :(

Good! It's lovely of them to make such an offer, but we should politely decline until we're both at level 1. How are we supposed to control it if it took just 2 travellers to re-infect New Zealand?

Oh we absolutely must come out of lockdown, but we must do it at the right pace and at the right time, otherwise what was the point of a lockdown in the first place?

My point wasn't that we shouldn't consider the economy, but allowing international travel surely doesn't pass the test of what feels appropriate right now. It should be at the bottom of the list, i.e. along with gyms and pubs. The decision has purely been made to save airlines and support the tourism industry over the summer period, that feels like the wrong priorities to me.

My post wasn't necessarily aimed at you but a series of posts and (external) opinions along a theme. Note that I did say that international travel wasn't the target of my post.

The point of lockdown is to reduce the risk to manageable levels, not to eliminate, which it has done. It's a fine balance to get right.

Again, not sure you realise the UK is the one with the highest number of infections and deaths in Europe? How is SPAIN supposed to control the virus if thousands of Brits will re-infect THEM!

Austerity was a choice, not a necessity. Other countries spent their way out of recession through borrowing and tax. Lives and avoiding a second peak should absolutely be prioritised over short term economic decisions, then a long term bottom up approach (e.g. UBI) to rebuild the economy is the way I would go about it.
 
South Korea confirms second wave. Sigh.

If even they can't avoid having one, we're screwed. Could be that managing the illness will be the only way and we're stuck with it for good.
 
I wish we'd come out much more gradually - we could have got to a similar point to where we are today, but a new small loosening every week would might have been better than this approach. With so much changing at once it's being made to sound like the End of Lockdown when it's obviously nowhere near that.

Even psychological things like calling it a "1 metre plus" rule, which sounds like it's actually "2 metres unless you're wearing a mask" - that messaging is dangerous as no-one's going to read the small print...

Yes, but that's why I mentioned our government - we are a country with at least another 4 years of a Conservative government so hoping for a better way is nice, but sadly unrealistic. And even in that perfect world, it would take time to pick things up again - the longer we wait, the longer it will take - and the marginalised and impoverished may not be able to wait for it.

Avoiding a large second peak is important, but the right balance must be struck between both elements which are both crucial, because there is no scenario where we make the virus disappear entirely for a good year. There is excess deaths to be had in both decisions, it's just making sure the pendulum doesn't swing too much in either direction.
 
I get that it's a delicate balancing act, but the scales just seem way too tipped in one way at the moment... 4th July seems so early to be basically opening the entire country back up again, especially considering how the case numbers are JUST about in decline and no more.

It would not surprise me one bit if the government were massaging the figures to make sure yesterday was the first day with fewer than 1000 cases registered.

Nobody knows what the right answer is for sure, but I think there's a level of cases/deaths we will just have to live with (excuse the morbid pun) because the virus ain't going anywhere. If things start heading rapidly the wrong direction, then manage it down again.

It's all speculation anyway and I genuinely hope I'm wrong. But I am much more fearful of the lasting untold damage of the economic fallout will cause (and I managed to get through all that without mentioning excess undiagnosed/untreated cancer deaths, yay)
