So I had a bit of a heart to heart with my parents last night that if we're going to see each other over Christmas, it'll have to be on certain terms. Those were me telling them not to go pick up their passports today and me organizing a PCR COVID-Test for them tomorrow as a Christmas present.

They happily agreed, also because I think my mum was quite aware that I was not taking any chances or doing things based on "good faith". None of us should at the moment. So come Wednesday we will all have been in self-isolation for 6 days and have had negative test results come back. That way, the three of us can get together over Christmas and I'll likely only have to deal with the anxiousness and cabin fever of my parents staying at my place for multiple nights rather than COVID-related anxiousness and fever. :rolleyes:

That’s a lovely compromise to make.
 
I'm glad the option was available - but it also made me realise how difficult it is to organise it and that many won't have that option or even the financial means to get tests. What a lousy time of a lousy year.
 
I’ve finished my 10 days of isolation, got my negative Covid test and am back with my family as of tonight.

OK I won’t be able to see any friends bar an hour at a 3m distance in the garden (I’m in Belfast so mixing outdoors is still allowed until Boxing Day), but I’m considering myself SO lucky to be in this situation that I thought a month or two ago would be overly restrictive.

My flatmate who I left in London wasn’t so lucky. He wasn’t due to fly home until Christmas Eve so now he can’t. :(
 
I feel entirely grateful too. Christmas is on as planned. I'm going to see friends on Christmas eve and NYE (outside - i've bought a massive fire pit and i'm already planning the number of layers).

I'm pretty much writing off my birthday in early Jan though. We'll either be in Tier 3 or there'll be a national lockdown.

Same. January 8th will be a complete WRITE-OFF much like it was 12 months ago when I was barely able to walk after a deep venous thrombosis with blood clots in my knee. What a RUBBISH 12 months. :D
 
Just checking out the latest UK covid map (which runs 5 days behind) - cases very starkly up everywhere. Cases up 243% in Cornwall, 393% on the Isle of Wight (@Rachey) and they've even introduced a new colour on the map for places with over 800+ cases per 100,000 (there's a lot of them).

York remains the best rate anywhere near but even we're 50% up.
 
Liverpool up again as well. Inevitably we’re out of blue (lowest tier) and back into the yellow. Seems like everywhere is on the climb.
 
Oh ignore me that map is different to the BBC one the colour schemes are different.
 
Not Drosten saying new data on the South East Covid strain isn’t looking good. :(

 
I have enjoyed maps this year. I feel like my understanding of UK (and US) geography is much more sound than it was a year ago.

Mine is January 2nd! I hate my birthday every year because everyone is over it, hungover, skint, tired, etc.

I was actually a bit furious at everyone who got amazing lockdown birthdays thinking by the time damp old January came around I’d miss out on that too but now I’m actually super excited for my lockdown birthday- I’m planning an ‘open house’ virtual party where my guests (who now have no excuse not to attend) can pop in and out as they please and I’m doing a quiz all about ME.

I even looked into having a zoom game of Fun House hosted by the actual Pat Sharp but it would cost me about 2.5k + VAT so fuck that.
 
Well we’re going back to full lockdown (offices closed, only supermarkets and pharmacies open) after Christmas Day.
 
I'm not going to Somerset for Christmas now. Christmas will be at my parents house and my sister is going to drive 180 miles to arrive just after midnight on Christmas Day before leaving again first thing on Boxing Day. Fucking government.

Meanwhile everyone is now losing their shit about Tier 4ers coming into town to shop and drink.

TBH I’ve been living in lockdown for the last month, I go out once a day for a walk and that’s about it. I guess they need this to force people to stay apart.
 
Sort of gagged/annoyed that I have a friend driving up to the Lake District to eat at fancy restaurants while the rest of us are stuck dealing with the SLOP of the present situation.

Wakefield in tier 3 is currently at 145/100,000 cases.

This is lower than 73/113 areas on the tier 2 list.

Not that I expect ANY tiers will be dropped in the near future? The number of places close to or above 1000/100,000 is pretty terrifying, don’t think I ever saw the rate that high in the past?

It was probably higher in the first wave back in April but they didn't have the means to test for it.

I do notice that, as of today, Tier 3 Derbyshire Dales is at 109 cases per 100,000 whereas Tier 1 Herefordshire is at 107. That reduction does not seem to have worked well.
 
I got my trial vaccine jab today. Counterintuitively I'm hoping to feel shit over the next day or two, as that will suggest it was the real thing and not the placebo.
 
691 deaths in the latest figures, which is the highest since the April peaks, I believe.

A further 36,804 cases too.

It’s not just about the number of cases, though, it’s about how the hospitals are coping. It’s why my area is in Tier 4.
 
We're in Tier 4 as is my mum, so being as she's on her own and she's been in our bubble all year, I'm grateful she can come round and actually stay. It's the one thing that IS allowed, and it'll just be 3 of us. I do feel a bit weird about it though, like we're doing something wrong. But she's being picked up, is mostly in good health and quite happily goes out to the shops and wherever else so I don't feel it's especially any more risky than what she does anyway.

But clearly there will be so many people doing whatever they want on the day including many people I know, because it's impossible to police. And the bubble thing means it's easy to manipulate. Half of which wouldn't have happened if they'd never dangled the carrot in the fucking first place.

Exactly the same. Got a cab over to my mum’s flat this evening which cost a bit, but I didn’t want to risk the tube. She only really goes to the supermarket which is walking distance from home and almost the same for me since Tier 3.

Trying to deal with my Dad (doesn’t live alone) who is still texting to see if we can visit him on Christmas Day - he was already going to be breaking the rules by travelling from London to Brighton for their original plans. I don’t think he understands at all.

There are so many like this - I wonder how much it will even make a difference these tier 4 rules, because every household could do whatever they please, as a lot will, and what will be done? There is nothing that can be done because it's too vast. Pulling the rug from under people at the last hour is only going to encourage it more.

Several people I know tell me how they're strictly following the rules - before unknowingly contradicting themselves by explaining plans which clearly break the rules.

I guess we're kind of lucky in that this year my mum coming over was always the plan, and as it turns out, that's fine, plus the fact my partner and I have small/distant families and we are deeply unsociable buggers anyway, so it's no hardship. But the temptation is obviously huge if you're usually one for big gatherings.

The problem is the whole "advice" thing rather than anything enforced. People are advised not to DRINK, SMOKE and EAT SHIT but we all do as we will with THAT advice. You'd like to think people would be more cautious when other people's lives and health are at stake, but it's a big leap in behaviour change.
 
Unfortunately one of my best mates is 7 months pregnant and was planning on travelling to Eastbourne to see her family. She even got her husband to drive there to deliver their cat and all the presents over to her aunt back when we were in Tier 2. Now she’s completely isolating in her London flat, husband has to do emergency food shopping as she can’t go out, and they have an angry 3 year old who is without presents and seriously missing their cat!
