Did you hear about a certain Scottish football club that decided to travel to Dubai after Christmas for a training camp/jolly around the swimming pool?

I’m just agog at the blatant disregard given that we were all expected to live under level 4 restrictions from Boxing Day.

Well... all of that is true, but still the vaccine is out there and a lot of vulnerable people are getting it. So maybe COVID isn't going away, but I have to believe deaths will be significantly down soon
 
Just under 25m watched the announcement last night across all channels, so seems I was wrong about people not being arsed to watch.

It's untested, but there are plenty of credible scientists who are happy to say that it's a reasonable response to the situation which we have found ourselves in. There should be very little chance of the jabs being rendered useless, although they will probably end up with lower levels of immunity than advertised. The theory seems to be that some immunity for more people is better than none, given the infection levels at the moment. It also seems like they believe that a vaccine to a mutated version will be much easier to make than the first vaccine because they already know the theory of how to do it and just need to make some tweaks to the active part.

There really are a lot of reasons to be hopeful at the moment, so try to keep your head up.

Although I will say all those Facebook statuses saying good riddance to 2020 and welcoming 2021 have already not aged well.

No, I didn’t know that but I am really not surprised. Absolutely SHOCKING.
 
The fact that the government have pledged to vaccinate 13 million or so people within six weeks shows they've learned NOTHING from the last 12 months (not to sound surprised).

The uptake for the flu jab across the WHOLE population (in England) is somewhere between 13.8 million - 14.3 million over five months. So yes, this is very different because it'll be delivered from dedicated hubs and there'll be a HUGE push. But it also has the complication of requiring two doses, which means there will be some attrition between jabs. As it scales up, people will start to fall through the net.

I've given up trying to predict how the general public will respond, but I think the thing most likely to make people SIT TIGHT over the next six weeks is the thought that the vaccine will become more freely available after mid-February when the most vulnerable are vaccinated. If (:eyes:) the government miss their target, all the clips of MORE failed promises will be dredged up by the media and I think at that point, people will just think "fuck it, I'm not waiting indoors any longer". If they can even wait THAT long.
 
The rules are as ever, a bit vague on some stuff.

Like, I can go out to exercise once a day, fine. I can take the dog to the vets, fine. Nothing specific about taking a dog for a walk, so is that my one exercise a day?

And then under "travel" it says: "You can leave your area to attend the care and exercise of an animal". So I can drive up to the countryside to take my dog for a walk, but I can't take him for a walk locally unless it's my one exercise a day? Ok then.

I guess this is where common sense is supposed to come in, but we all know the country has no common sense if rules can be interpreted in different ways.
 
My mum usually does a doorstep drop off of (cooked) food to me twice a week, I'm actually unsure if that's allowed now
 
Being put back on furlough and one of my major upcoming projects is being outsourced. This is getting a bit worrying

Not sure how well I can cope with potential redundancy on top of everything :(
Only hoping that the cost of laying me off after getting on for 15 years would be a bit offputting...
 
What do you do? Seems a bit unfair to outsource your upcoming work, as surely the idea of furlough is that there isn't enough work to be done?
 
Bit of everything in an IT department (with one other guy who's the manager and being pulled back off furlough in my place).

They secured some kind of business development funding for a new website and seem to be splashing out on having an outside company do it. I suppose it might be that the funding wouldn't apply to salary for in-house development.

They do have a lot of people on like a furlough rota at the moment, they see it more as "free money" and a bit like having people on 2 week holidays than its intended purpose
 
Oh yes, it’s highly likely the grant conditions are that certain companies have to be used to create the website that’s being paid for, that’s common. I wouldn’t say they’ve decided to splash out on an external company over you, more that it’s the only way they get the goods.
 
Have we topped 1000 deaths in a day yet, or have they managed to massage the figures down? I see we hit 60k cases for the first time today.
 
Covid has now killed more people in the UK in the last 12 months, than died of smoking related illnesses.

Though one would presume a crossover.

I don’t think they have ever let it hit 1k in a day, although I am sure one day had death figures in the high 900’s.
 
Maybe there’s more to it, but that’s really encouraging. It seems to me like if they can vaccinate everyone 70+, it would stop the vast majority of deaths, which is the main goal I would think

According to that I'm between June & July but Nicola says all over 50s should be vaccinated by May so you may be a bit earlier than that prediction
 
Oh good, the reports people were saying of 2022 sometime were really getting me down. Let's hope things do actually move at a decent pace. It's good to hear so many over 80s are done, they just have to keep it up and hopefully go even faster so we can get say all over 60s and clinically vulnerable done and be able to relax a bit.

I'd get CRUCIFIED some places for saying this but I don't think eradication seems likely so at that point I'd start to kind of hope the rest of us can take our chances a little for the sake of returning to a life worth prolonging. Despite the risk of long covid, and that I have no right to impose this thought on others etc. At some point we need to get things active again, get people back into jobs and schools, see if a few pubs and restaurants have survived, get non-covid treatments back up and running in hospitals, and work on the nation's mental health. At some point along the vaccination roadmap those risks (untreated physical and mental health issues) will become a bigger risk than covid. I don't think I'm legit suicidal per se, but I've started having thoughts of "if this dragged on into 2022 and beyond I'm not sure how much I want to carry on" and there are people with MUCH worse mental health than me.
("Go see a GP", you say? That's a laugh innit)

Maybe I'm biased (obviously I am) but I really do think the schools being closed is a MASSIVELY significant difference to the second lockdown. That's 1 in 7 people NOT mixing with people all day long. The people with the highest percentage chance of having and spreading the disease.

So yes, while Costa and Pret are open this time, it feels MUCH quieter out and about to me. And we have millions fewer vectors crossing path every single day. Hundreds of millions fewer interactions every single day.
 
How ARE people who have needed a GP consultation recently finding it?

In my professional and personal experience here it's been relatively straightforward. The only time I personally needed a GP was to get a mental health related sick note, which I found very easy - it was all done by phone call, and renewed once after I requested it online. I wasn't asked to see a GP face to face, and in this instance I didn't want to.

For face to face appointments, here at least you cannot book one with a receptionist - you would be offered a phone call with a GP and it will be their job to decide if you need to be seen or not.
 
Here the government has ”promised” that all adults who want to be vaccinated, will get to do it before Midsummer.

and yet I can't pop to my local tennis court and play a game of tennis with someone standing 25 metres away at the other end of the court...
 
I had to go out and get some shopping for my mum today, and at her local high street (anchored by a Sainsburys, Wilko and Iceland) appeared about the same as when I was out Saturday.

I guess it's inevitable given the announcement yesterday that a lot of people would have headed out today to stock up, though. So I hope we will see more of a lockdown in terms of less people out and about soon.
