I was fine when I travelled up to my mum and dad’s house but have developed a sore throat and sniffly nose for a couple of days now - but have taken a latty flow every day (sometimes two!) since arriving back in Scotland and there has never been even a hint of a line. Negative PCR last Sat as well. Booked another just incase though.

I’d already been mingling around my parents (thankfully both boostered, I guess) for a couple of days prior to any symptoms showing. :manson: Hoping it’s just from being completely and utterly run down.
 
Can you get PCRs without even having symptoms? I've seen various people saying they've taken them just in case (not TR as I know you have symptoms) but can't tell if the guidance has changed or not.

Desperately clinging to that hope of it being mild. Really it seems to be a "shit or bust" gamble, either Omicron means it's basically over or it means it's going to cause untold bloodshed - England's response pushes it one way or the other
 
This being NOT MY FIRST TIME at the cold rodeo in recent times, I have a good baseline comparison, but fuck me, I feel rotten. I thought I was better yesterday but then last night had the runs out of nowhere, was aching and coughing and wanted to be sick. Was in bed by 8 and have slept right through.

Still showing entirely negative. Awaiting my PCR from yesterday but I’m kinda weird about going to my in- laws. I guess I’ve done everything I can.
 
Also, this "oh, fewer people are dying this time so it's fine" narrative being pushed in certain quarters can fuck all the way off.

Indeed. I have just realised this morning though that when I had my latest cancer lumps out last Friday they gave me antibiotics and said they must be on an empty stomach. Forgot my dose before dinner last night and chucked them in just after. It may have been that that caused the problem!

Wishing I hadn’t told the people running the vaccine trial I’m on. Now I have to do a load of extra tests for them as well as a daily symptom questionnaire and temperature check plus three times daily pulse oximeter readings, and they want me to go in for a visit. They even suggested TODAY, as apparently you’re allowed to leave self-isolation for official research purposes. Hun. You must know how infectious this thing is, I’ve told you I’m positive and you want me to go into a HOSPITAL, down a load of different corridors, past a load of already sick people and frontline staff?

I’m no SCIENCETITAN but isn’t there a danger in reading too much into that SA data. I note certain parts of the media have gone into overdrive on it being a milder illness than Delta whilst neglecting the fact that it appears to be significantly more transmissible (so the two factors may well cancel each other out). But what do I know.

I think every time I’ve read about any studies referring to the decreased severity they’ve put that caveat in, or at least quoted a health professional mentioning it. People will read what they want to read though.

A less deadly but more contagious virus could potentially spiral out of control and cause more deaths over all.

Yeah there's huge caveats to South African experience - like a) It's summer over there, b) up to 80% of the population may have some natural immunity already and c) a younger demographic, just for starters.

I don't think there's much doubt that omicron is a bit milder. But yes, if it infects 10x more people, it'd need to be 10x less deadly. That's the big question nobody really knows.
 
I was just talking to my GP friend and she was telling me about an elderly couple yesterday who again were in poor health but wouldn't get the vaccine because they've a friend who is a funeral director and he told them all the covid deaths are due to blood clots from the vaccine. It's sad sometimes how information is misinterpreted :(

It’s always qualified with commentary about the sheer number of cases and how it’s still dangerous though.

They’re just reporting the facts - people also say it’s irresponsible and fearmongering when they lead with “tsunamis” and “tidal waves” of Omicron. We can’t have it both ways.
 
Thats their own stupid fault. If omicron is resulting in less deaths then it needs reporting.

Certain quarters? It’s fucking everywhere! Like Omicron It’s becoming the dominant opinion, casting aside all logical opinion in its wake

Clearly NONE of them are key workers…

This. This is the bit people aren’t getting. I’m tired of explaining it to people I know who are actually quite intelligent. It’s like simple math has just gone completely out of the window.

There are many variables as any scientist will tell you, but rate of infection is just as important as the severity of infection when it comes to managing a pandemic.
