Do you like Madonna?

Do you like Madonna

If she's good enough for Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, she's good enough for me.

She has an incredible back catalogue of musical work and an incredible back and ongoing catalogue of advocacy, tolerance and acceptance in multiple social issues even when she got roasted for it and it affected her commercially potentially so yes, I definitely like her.

I do not like Madonna, purely because I enjoy singers and she isn’t one.

Her or her music? Then or now? This there are about 5 Madonnas whom I like/dislike for very different reasons in different intervals.

She was my favourite artist overall throughout my formative years, and that back collection is undeniable.

However, I’ve never gone off someone’s music more than hers. I think there is about three songs that rank at 7/10 or so for me post 2009, and I don’t even listen to the albums even on release anymore.

Couldn’t give two hoots about her as a person, really. Respect her earlier support of various communities, find her a bit embarrassing now, but neither impact my thoughts on the music.

That's about it for me. I don't really like her, but it doesn't matter that much, I play her music a lot, except the unlistenable last 15 years. Thankfully the first 20 were magic.

She's probably my 2nd favorite artist of all time, after Kylie. But I don't have much interest in anything post 2009. I love her as a person too, even if she does have some annoying traits.

Not even GIRL GONE WILD?!

When John Lennon died every drew a veil over his shite albums and went on and on about the good ones. The same thing will happen to Madonna - she'll always be the queen of the 80s who went a bit weird in the early 90s then staged a remarkable commercial comeback with her best album (Ray Of Light) and then kept going for another xx years. But while she's releasing those "she kept going" albums, it gets harder and harder to see the peak. At some point, all of the mediocre music will be swept away and history will record her as one of the true greats.

When McCartney dies, will anyone reach for "Press To Play" for solace? Will they fuck.

Would I want to hang out with her? NO! I've seen In Bed With Madonna, I know she's evil. But the role of an artist is to DISTURB THE PEACE. Sometimes that manifests in the form of fighting the good fight for those suffering at the height of the HIV crisis, sometimes that manifests as turning up at the bevelled window of your Nan's front door and singing 'Gang Bang' threateningly through the letterbox.

But that is all the more reason to like her as an artist. I don't want to be best friends with my favourite artists.

This post is more important than COPERNICUS

I wouldn’t say she “went a bit weird in the 90s”. She was absolutely glorious all the way up until 2000. The sheer quality of output for the first 15+ years is insane. Unfortunately that means for me, the bulk of her career has been post-2000 and it’s been all downhill from there - sorry, I don’t even like Confessions.

I respect her more than I like her. Not that I think she'd give a shit - and quite rightly so.

I think this is where I stand really. She can be abrasive and that is absolutely her right but it also stops me from warming to her. It's why I don't like Novak Djokovic for instance. I wouldn't go so far as saying I dislike Madonna though.

There is no denying her unrivalled significance and superlative back catalogue.

She did a bit - the whole Erotica/Sex thing is really quite odd in retrospect, even if it's clear what she was reaching for. Plus Bedtime Stories was a more lowkey, experimental album. Then it's Evita. Strange trajectory.

I WANT to like her but she makes it very hard. Her music is very hit and miss for me.

Strange trajectory yes. But really quite brilliant when you think about it. They’ve all held up, and certainly more memorable than a lot of more recent acts whose works are mostly indistinguishable from one to the next.

this thread is weird. how does she make it very hard?

I think Madonna has been far warmer and more likable in the last 3-5 years than at any other point in her career? she seems to have mellowed a lot. I feel a lot of people's opinions about who Madonna is are formed by what she posts on instagram. which is not real life. too many people give too much of a fuck about what she looks like. it's reductive - yes - to her legacy, to the barriers she's broken, to the excellence she continues to serve on tour, to the general defiance (and this really cannot be overstated) of being a woman in pop at 60+ who refuses to stop. misogyny is rife. continuing in the face of it is a protest, and in doing so she's still breaking barriers for the legends who will have the opportunity to keep going when they reach her age, and I have so much respect for that. I also think she's an incredible mother to her kids and they all clearly adore her and seem grounded and that's kind of a miracle in itself and speaks very highly to who she is.

I can't stand when her name comes up in conversation IRL and people default to "she looks awful now", "she's embarrassing" or "she should retire." like shut the fuck up, Karen.

I love her music and have since 1984. As a little gay boy living in the redneck backwoods of Arkansas, sometimes she was all I had to hold on to.

Yes she posts cringe on Instagram and it does her no favors BUT it doesn’t hinder my enjoyment of her music and live shows which is all I care about at the end of the day.

Basically what a lot of you have said already; yes I love her music, and her singles catalog is bulletproof except maybe for a handful of songs that perhaps were a good idea at the time but seem questionable now. I don't care about her personal life and why should I? I don't follow her on socials at all, I'm just glad she's still going and releasing bits and bobs now and then, except for stuff like Vulgar, sure it's for the LOLS but I don't see the point and just reinforces my point of giving her kudos for doing whatever the fuck she wants.

She's responsible for two of my favourite records of all-time in Ray Of Light and Confessions On A Dancefloor.

And she has one of the very greatest run of singles all the way to to 2008.

So yeah, I like her. It's much easier to maintain goodwill for her if you ignore Instagram and ignore all new releases.

Her personality? Whatever. You can't hate her if you're simulatenously going to simp over other abrasive pop divas like Mariah, Christina, J Lo etc.
